    Vinyls Restoration... Help, please

    Hi!

Please help me: I need to know how can I restore my vinyls. The covers (paper) are experimenting a bit of dehydration. I have a 56 single and want to preserve it correctly. Any advice is really welcome. Thanks a lot.

    Hi Wendy,

I know that paper is preserved with acid free paper. I don't know much about the vinyls, but to keep it away from heat and store it, maybe in an upright position or flat, don't know for sure. I have old 45 rpm's stored in boxes laying down, but I think they should be in an upright position. Mine have been just fine all these years. I have had them since they first came out way back in he 50's

I know someone has a better answer then me.

will scorn. Where LOVE will bless the earth
    and peace its paths adorn...

Here's the best way to keep your records safe. Do not lay them flat, ever! it leaves the rings in the center of the cover! For the 45's, take the record out of the sleeve and put it between the special cardboard in between and a protector see through sleeve. For albums, the same thing.
Both of my 45's and albums are standing upright and are still in good condition. When I started my collection at the age of 10, I had around 10 albums laying flat...it left the rings in the center of the covers. So, I don't do them anymore. Never put scotch tapes on any of the covers! it really ruins them! Just keep them in protector sleeves. It looks better that way.
If you ever had a price tag on covers and wanted them off, use the 'Adhesive Remover'. It does not hurt the covers at all! It really works!

Sheila is right, that's the best way to store lp's & 45's! I would just add keep them in a closet where they won't see the light of day to avoid discoloration. Here's one example from my collection to show you how clean they can be even after 46 years if you store them the way Sheila explained.

You are right about the way albums and 45s should be stored. Years ago you could buy record cases and store in them about 50 albums and also the same for 45s, I don't know if these can still be bought but they were an ideal way of storing - as long as you don't go mad and put more than you should inside the cases!

Thank you SO MUCH for your help (really, thanks a lot Sheila). But I still have that doubt about the dehydrated paper. My boyfriend gave me a '56 45 but is was already dehydrated on the inside of the cover paper. I thought maybe I could repair it. Is that posible?

    THANKS AGAIN!
