Thread: Privacy for Elvis

  1. #1

    Privacy for Elvis

I've never liked to pry into other people's personal lives because I was brought up to think that was a sign of respect for their privacy.

It made me think what if someone suggested we all talk about our own private and personal lives or our loved ones the way we talk about Elvis on these forums. Would anyone go for it? Who's first one up then?

My point is that there seems to be one set of rules for OUR personal lives and a complete opposite one for Elvis. Is it because he's a celebrity? But most of us claim he feels like part of our family yet we don't treat him like one. It seems to me like the rules are bent about this topic and are highly unfair.

Good thread Diane. Elvis to me will always be handsome, always be young, will always be the most talented person in the world and will live on forever through the fans that adore him. I will never say anything negative about him. That is how and the way I will always feel about him!
America has contributed four things to the world that are really unique: Baseball, Coca-Cola, Mickey Mouse and Elvis Presley. And only one of them is human - - Jerry Hopkins - "Elvis" - A Biography.

I agree with you Diane. He was a very private person but it seems that everyone wanted to know every detail about his private life. I have heard, from people that were around him, that he was a very nice and respectful person. I don't think that he would have asked people some of the questions that have been asked about him. I think those rules should also apply his daughter and grandchildren.

That there is a thread about Elvis' hygiene is disgusting to me (no offense, that's just my personal opinion). I know it's been talked about by some of the Memphis Mafia (obviously, they ran out of things to say about Elvis, so why not bring his bathing habits?), but consider the source. If they hadn't brought it up in the first place, I'm pretty sure the fans wouldn't be talking about it either. And you're right, Diane, I wouldn't myself or want anyone else discussing my or my families personal business.

Maybe because it's the internet, people feel they can write or say whatever they want and respect doesn't matter. We all know Elvis wasn't perfect. None of us are. But wouldn't you want the same respect? Do unto others...okay, okay...getting off my high horse. It just makes me feel sort of sad for Elvis. It's like we have to analyze EVERY single thing about him. Leave something to the imagaination (or not, like in the case with the hygiene thing, in which case, info about that is too much information).

Guess there isn't much we can do about it, but it would be nice if people used better discretion while talking about someone they admire.

I agree, Diane, I've raised this point myself before, while replying to someone at some stage, so reading what you wrote, and your replies thus far, I'm glad others feel the same.

I absolutely 100% agree with the above posts. Some things regarding Elvis should be kept private and not discussed....and yes, I'll agree that the personal hygiene thread went a bit over the line....

I agree with you, Diane. It's one of the reasons I don't like some of the books out by some of the Memphis Mafia - TOO MUCH INFORMATION!! Same goes for the book written by Col. Tom, I didn't buy it, I picked it up to skim through at the library. There's one statement that IMO goes way over the line. If you've read it, you know what I mean, I can't bring myself to repeat it & I'm sorry I even opened that book!

Just pretend, I'm holding you, and whispering things soft and low.
And think of me, how it's gonna be and just pretend I didn't go

I remember watching an interview whereas the Colonel said he wouldn't ever write a book.

He must have changed his mind?

NOW THIS is a GREAT thread! Thank you Diane!!!!

    I agree many times over!

And I apologize I don't remember who said it but whomever stated that it should apply to his daughter and his grandchildren~AMEN!

Also have to agree w/the individual who stated Elvis was a private person and that we fans want to know things about him, true all of that, but some things are better left unsaid, unknown.

I love the man, his music, his smile but most of all I love the heart of the man, his beautiful soul, yes he made mistakes, yes he had faults, he was human, I think at times sight of that is lost...irregardless, he deserves respect and the fans protection of his dignity, for that is all he ever wanted, was his privacy and his dignity.

One thread in particular had me floored, that someone claiming to be a fan would post.

Do I wear (and I love the term as used on this forum) rose colored glasses, absolutely not, does it change how I feel about him, a resounding NO!

Thank you again for a truly wonderful thread, am jealous I didn't think of it! rof

Sorry, but once a person's dead, privacy is no longer an issue.

If people decide to reveal stories after someone is gone, that's their choice. And it's our choice as to whether we want to listen to them. No one is forcing their Elvis stories down our throats.

Elvis has been dead 30 years: it's not as if any of this stuff happened yesterday.

What, do you want a moratorium on stories about Elvis forever?

I agree Getlo...I understand how everyone feels - not wanting to discuss his private life - but because of how we feel about Elvis - we are fascinated by his private life....I don't think that is wrong by any means. We want to know what made him "tick".

As for the hygiene post - I am once again defending Vissie - she did not start that thread to be maliscious and I thought we agreed to drop the thread - but you guys keep bringing it up.....

l agree Kelly, some threads l don't see nothing wrong with them, but than again we'd be shocked if someone was talking about us that way l suppose.

Jen, celebrities even today are under a micoscope because they are celebrities and that is the life they chose. Does it make it right? No....but it's something they learn to live with.

If Elvis had every done his own biography, maybe there wouldn't be so many questions...and if those around him told the truth and not just their version...maybe things would be different. But everywhere you read on this site most say don't believe the MM, don't believe Priscilla, don't believe George Klein, etc., etc. so we are all thirsting for more knowledge of our beloved Elvis.

You guys have no problems discussing his death and when/why/how of it.....why are you picking and choosing what is allowed to be posted on here? Those few of you jump down anyone else's throats that don't agree with you (no Jen not referring to you)...and it's not fair to the rest of us. We all have our opinions on his life and his death and if we didn't care about him - we would not even be on this site....so please try and keep that in mind.

Precisely. If you don't like a particular thread, don't post on it! And if you do post ... back yourself up with some references, ar at least explain how you came to your conclusions, eg. The Colonel "stole" Elvis from Parker (!) ... or the MM only did it for the money (!) etc etc
