Can't Help Falling in Love - Plaisir D'Amour

I didn't know where to put this post at. It's not quiet Elvis related but it kinda is...

So I was surfing on Youtube and I found something interesting. It was this video of Elvis singing "Can't Help Falling In Love" in Blue Hawaii. The person who posted the video also posted the song's history. They said that the song's melody was base on a French song called, "Plaisir D'Amour" by Jean Paul Egide Martini. I've listened to both and I can hear the similarities to "Can't Help Falling In Love". I though this was a very cool find. I really like this song Just imagine how good it would sound if Elvis sang it

Just like the song 'Tonight's so right for love' was based on 'Orpheus in die Unterwelt', 'It's Now Or Never' on 'O Sole Mio', 'Surrender' on 'Torna a Surriento', 'Almost Always True' on 'Alouette' - and of course we're familiar with 'Muss I denn' or 'Wooden Heart'. 'Hurt' was an Italian song called 'A Chi'.

Yeah, don't underestimate Europe's influence. I do know 'Plaisir d'Amour'. It was part of my lessons for classical guitar. I told my teacher Elvis did an English version of it, he didn't know that.

My friend was singing "Wooden Heart" while helping her grandmother (Who is German) cook and her Grandmother asked her where she had learned it from and she told her Elvis. Music is a universal language!

Thanks, that's a lovely post. I enjoy reading about these things.

I'm glad there's a way for Americans to enjoy German folk songs. All in all, some folks might say 'Wooden Heart' is a stupid song. But to me, it features among the best songs from his movies.

Oh, and did you know 'She Wears My Ring' was originally 'La Golondrina'? I think it came from Mexico or Cuba, but the original language and the melody are typically European. I like Elvis' version better than Roy Orbison's - Elvis articulates more carefully, sounds more like he's in control. In the case of 'I Can't Stop Loving You' I'd have to pick Roy's as my favorite though.
