Return to Sender
Western Union
Two songs which are SO alike musically, lyrically and thematically. Western Union sounds like a follow up to the story that begins in Return to Sender.
I'm not sure if that was deliberate or just fortuitous, but which of them would you prefer and why?
I'm voting Western Union, because I love continuing stories and somehow, musically, it just has the edge for me.
(p.s. according to Elvis His Life A-Z Return to Sender was the first UK #1 hit to include the saxophone!)
I really like both of the songs![]()
Western Union is a good song, and Father Conor you are right it's like a second part from Return To Sender, which is cool![]()
But, my vote goes to Return To Sender, because I like the way he sang it![]()

Ive voted for Return To Sender...this is an all time Presley classic, with Elvis obviously enjoying himself as you can feel the joy in his vocals..everybody in the studio must have known this was going to be a hit as soon as they started recording it..and this infectious bounce and happiness is carried along through the whole song...
Western Union whilst again a great song just seems to lack that extra something to take it to the same level as Return To Sender, though I doubt there is anything else Elvis or the band could have done to make this song any better than it is, for me it just doesnt quite make the grade. Its good but not great.![]()
I voted Return To Sender - his performance of it in GGG is an Elvis highlight for me......he seems to be having so much fun and he looks divine........like Western Union too....but Return To Sender is a classic for me.
i will chose return to sender as when i hear it i smile and want to dance western union is good but you can't beat a classic
Yes for me its also Return to Sender. Western Union is like a sequel to me also. We all know the original is usually superior to a sequel. But Western Union is nice also.
I like both songs pretty much equally but what I like best in Western Union is that he is more forceful in trying to win the lady back.![]()
Diane
thats a valid point never thought of it that way
Here are the words to both songs.
Western Union
Western Union
Oh, Western Union clickety clack
I had a fight with my baby
Ooh how sorry I am
She won't talk to me no how
I'm gonna send a telegram
Western Union oh yeah
Send my lovin' baby back to me
She won't open my letters
She won't answer the phone
When I'm a-ringin' her doorbell
She says there ain't nobody home
Western Union oh yeah
Send my lovin' baby back to me
Western Union oh yeah
Send my lovin' baby back to me
I love you is my message
Just three words and no more
If she won't let you deliver
Slip it underneath her door
Western Union oh yeah
Send my lovin' baby back to me
Western Union oh yeah
Send my lovin' baby back to me

Return To Sender
I gave a letter to the postman,
he put it his sack.
But in early next morning,
he brought my letter back.
She wrote upon it:
Return to sender, address unknown.
No such number, no such zone.
We had a quarrel, a lover's spat
I write I'm sorry but my letter keeps coming back.
So then I dropped it in the mailbox
And sent it special D.
But in early next morning
it came right back to me.
She wrote upon it:
Return to sender, address unknown.
No such number, no such zone.
This time I'm gonna take it myself
and put it right in her hand.
And if it comes back the very next day
then I'll understand the writing on it
Return to sender, address unknown.
No such person, no such zone.
If i have to choose it would be return to sender. i loved this song as a child.
