When did Elvis become "The King of Rock and Roll"

Not thinking here of the well documented first use of the title for Elvis but rather, when did he become the guy who could walk into a studio and do what he was given as he pleased or have a studio drive up to him? Alvis Presley became Elvis Prestly, became Elvis Presley, became ELVIS. When did he become the star of Rock and Roll?

I'm guessing its at least pre-Beatles given their desire to meet him as the main man.
But was he it before/during/after the army years?

The first time Elvis was called this was on April 19, 1956 by the "Waco
    - News Tribune". HERE IS THE ARTICLE - "shortly before he was to go on
stage at the Heart O Texas Coliseum, Elvis Presley, the new 21 year old
"King Of Rock N Roll" sat In a darkened Cadillac Limousine for an
Interview - well hidden from the site of 4,000 screaming, squeeling
teenagers, who were on hand to welcome him on tuesday night. All the hip
cats were there and not enogh fuzz

Thiswas a title that someone else came up with and it fit.
Unlike the "King of POP" title Micheal Jackson demanded MTV use.

Uh, Elizabeth Taylor was the one who came up with that. She said it first on an awards show.

I'm not sure if Elvis liked the title of "king of Rock 'n' Roll" but he had humility in abundance unlike MJ whose title is a little contrived if he has asked MTV to use it.

A title is bestowed not requested.

    re

    Elvis didn't like this title.
As he sang ''The Wonder of You'' in concert in Atlanta 30 december 1976,he stopped at the line,''you touched my hand and i'm a king...and then says, there is only one king and that is God.
And if i'm not mistaken he also said too friends that he didn't like this title...
I'd like to go to Graceland
    Memphis,Tennessee
