    Laying down on songs

I have seen photos/clips of Elvis laying down during some songs. Why would he do this? Which songs did he do this on?

Indeed, he looked good... I am sure that he often did it during Hurt in 1976-1977. We even have that on video in the Pittsburgh New Year's Concert...
And i think that he also layed back on Suspicious Minds... hope i'm not making a mistake.

Maybe he just did it cause he wanted to? No big deal.

I've also seen photos of him doing this way back in the early 50's, maybe the Hayride tours. Then he did it because the girls would scream. Of course, back then the girls would scream when he grabbed the mike to sing!

This is from the Inner Elvis as told by Steve Binder.

In the sound studio, Elvis and Binder sent the technicians home. Instead of his normal stance, sitting on the high recording stool using a boom microphone, Elvis opted for a hand-held mike and asked that the lights be dimmed. He put on the "cans," or professional headphones that carried the prerecorded orchestral backing, and began to sing "If I Can Dream." When he finished, he sang it a second time, only now sitting on the floor. Then, asking for all lights to be turned off, he sang while lying on his back. Binder suggests that for every artist, for whatever reason, one particular work emerges as the most true reflection of their personal self. For Elvis, this was that work. Once again, his body language told the story. Elvis's final versions of "If I Can Dream" were sung curled in the fetal position, on the floor of the studio, alone, in total darkness. It was a scene that evoked an image of the adolescent Elvis singing in the dark at the Lauderdale Courts. Said Binder, "It was unbelievable."

I think the great thing in an Elvis performance was you knew he might do anything-at anytime. Now the laying down was just another bit of performing a little different. When he sang the end of "Hurt" laying down thats is amazing. Its harder to sing full voice that way as your lungs and diaphragm are flattened more than if you are standing. You really can not hear any difference in his singing when he does it. Amazing!
