It isn't the best suit, but it has its own style in it.

I agree LtCarman. It wasn't designed as stage wear but as private wardrobe. I only wish people would stop calling it "Penguin Suit".

leroy this is what it was called by the fans back then , this was how we called it also named it the white flying suit, i know you want the correct name for wardrobe but i think you have and should except that those of us who were around in those days named these suits, how we viewd them.

All these suits have official names. So why don't be thankful you have an opportunity to get these names and use them. There are so many lies and half truths surrounding the Elvis Myth. Wouldn't it be better to call things by the real name? Like you would like to be called by your real name, instead of by how people see you?

The official name of this suit is "Two Toned Street Suit"
I think the name "Penguin" is insulting, for Elvis... and for his wardrobe designer....

yes accuracy is very important for dating photos etc, i honestly don't think ELVIS would have mind that name[he never took himself that seriously] , shaver started many of these names to differenciate the suits, so fans knew , example the memphis king, powder blue suit, aloha suit etc.. my point is that many ol fans as myself still refer to these names , for me they just stuck, i sure don't mean any disrespect to E.P. or you for that fact , i guess to each his own.

In that case.... I wonder what I'm still doing here.....

    Re: Penguin Jumpsuit (1975)

I became an Elvis fan in 1989. I was still and remain an Elvis fan of the 1970's. At the time there was very little info, and the few that there was, was not entirely accurate. Since then, some fans decided to use their time, and resources to give us accurate information;. We must be more than grateful to these individuals.

I started using 'pet' names of jumpsuits way back and it took me a while to remember the new names.

This reminds me of when I was a little child and I used to call the public transport bus 'orange box'. But when I was told that it was a bus, what was the use of continuing calling it 'orange box'. It took some time to set in BUT IT MADE SENSE.

Leroy, the list of things I learned from your contributions here is ENOURMOUS.

This is the BEST Elvis forum - one of its strengths is the contribution of its members, who share INFORMATION with members like me, who know little.

    So, Leroy keep 'em comin'

    Re: Penguin Jumpsuit (1975)

Are there `official' names for Elvis' attire and if so how did they come about.
This one has been commonly known as the Penguin Suit and therefore I'd imagine it will continue to be known as that

The suits were created by Gene, so the names he attributed to his creations should be the official names.

Leroy interviewed Gene, where the official names came up. Instead of keeping the info himself, he shared it here with us. Thanks again Leroy

indeed please stay. Leroy has much info to offer which comes from the designers. So very worthwhile.

And indeed similar to the orange box, what's the use of calling an object other then by it's right name? This is called progressing insight.

I for one still am curious about the exact colour of stone on the snowflake (73) suit. Hopefully Leroy can answer that question.

    Re: Penguin Jumpsuit (1975)

I have to admit that even though all these suits have official names given by the designer or christened by Elvis himself-back in 1969 none of us knew what they were called-and they ended up with fan given names-not out of any disrespect to the designer nor to Elvis.....I am glad we all can now find out the true intentional names of all these creations.
But some people are going to slip up and call certain suits what they are used to calling it-its not out of disrespect to anyone I'm sure.
I really do not like the fan called "Penguin Suit" officially the "Two Toned Street Suit"-it always looked too bulky to me-not slimming in appearance at all-actually IMO it does the opposite.
    Work in Progress!

You hit the nail on the head Hounddog..... that is exactly the official name. "Two-toned Street Suit". The were meant as personal wardrobe and not for using on stage. He only did once, and only because someone started a conversation backstage he couldn't get out. So he had no time to change and decided to go on as he was.....
