Apart from his family, Scotty Moore.
I'm sorry if this has been covered before, but I wanted to know, out of all the people that was close to Elvis, who do you think were the genuine ones, the ones he could depend on.
Thats a very subjective question.
Elvis's family took a lot of money from him and never were really around him apart from his immediate family. The cousins took a lot.
Scotty Moore wasn't really on the scene that much.
The Sun Never Sets On A Legend...
A reading of Scotty Moore's book "That's Alright Elvis" shows how Scotty was always there for Elvis.
Off course Elvis's close family benifited from Elvis's success. He loved them dearly. He gave them all gifts that's quite natural in close families.
Scotty Moore was a non factor in Elvis' life after the very early years.I tend to believe they would have kept in contact more if they were particulary close.Im sure Elvis looked up to him back then and was gratefull.I just wouldnt put him in the category of a confidant of Elvis'.
Jak
I didn't say he was a confidant. Did Elvis ever have a real confidant.......an intelligent one?
We were talking about the genuine people around Elvis. Scotty's book is well worth aquiring. Scotty was often called back to Elvis because of the bond they made on the road in the early days and Elvis appreciated Scotty's famous ability with a guitar..even till 1968!
I met Scotty backstage here in Ireland and found him to be a gentleman. We had a little chat even though he was still recovering from an operation he performed in a Concert, and agreed to meet people after the show.
Later I read his book. I admire the man.
Who were the genuine people in Elvis' life?![]()

If your an Elvis fan, no explanation is necessary....
If your not, no explanation is possible!
god that's a hard question, Dodger, he loved his Grandma. I don't know that's such a hard question. JD Sumner, the woman from the Sweets, he spent a lot of time with them. man there's my pics, besides Gladys.
Looking at the ones who never stabbed him in the back or portrayed him in any way I would say there were some good friends and companions in his life who were there for him and not for his money. I would say the list below would define who were the most genuine in EP's life.
Gladys Presley
Minnie Mae Presley
Vernon Presley
Delta Mae Presley
Vester Presley
Lisa Marie Presley
Linda Thompson
Myrna Smith
JD Sumner
Scotty Moore
Mary Jenkins
Nancy Rooks
Maggie Smith
Pauline Nicholson
Marion Cocke
Jerry Schilling
George Klein
Joe Esposito
Charlie Hodge

I mean like Charlie Hodge said to me once. You can tell which ones loved that man to death and which ones was there for money and worked for the Col. Tom.
I believe the one that really truely loved elvis was his Dad of course and Charlie Hodge. Just sometime saying his name or saying I miss him would bring tears to that mans eyes.
Now not sure if this is true but when money was tight at one time for Elvis is it true that Charlie said he would do shows for free to help Elvis out?
Love to all,
Tim Dudley
Don't you be so sure of that one.
Maurice: I would also add D.J. Fontana. He has always struck me as a cool guy. Another would be Sam Phillips. The most genuine of all -- at least, to Elvis himself -- would, of course, have been his parents. It seems he may also have been especially close in some way to J.D. Sumner, though I'm not sure the two ever talked at any great length. There was definitely an honest admiration between the two. Red and Sonny West were also very close to him; Red was not only his friend from high school, but even wrote songs for him, and like Sonny, would have taken a bullet for his friend. Something to think about.
Exactly. Moore was a musician and was as close to Elvis as members of the TCB Band were - not much. Moore was there for the 1968 special, but to say Elvis and Moore spent a lot of time together or that he was close really isn't true.
It does show how far from reality some people are if they believe nonsense written in one persons book - instead of actually gathering information from various sources to confirm if somethingmay or may not be true.
Of course the vast array of photos of Elvis and Moore - especially in the 70's, backs up the claims that Moore was around.
( Pity I have never seen a picture of Scotty and Elvis in the 70's - but SINCE they spent that much tie together and SCOTTY says they were really close - THERE must be PLENTY of PICTURES! )

Although I find you comments funnythere is a chink in the armour. Elvis met lots of people including the Beatles and there are no pictures of them with arms round each other etc. It is one thing to meet people in public, it is another to do it in private. So there is a slim posibility that they met up in the 70's albeit very slim

I agree Moore was an acquaintance, but I believe he was a true friend back in the 50's even if the feeling wasn't reciprocated.
Personally, I think there were only two genuine people in Elvis' life. Two people who didn't want to benefit from his fame and fortune..they were, firstly Gladys, who just wanted her boy to be happy, and the other one was June Juanico..

"Walk A Block In My Socks"
Yes, Scotty was a genuine friend.
I think Scotty was far more than just an acquaintance. He spent a couple of years on the road touring with Elvis. He was Elvis's manager for a time.
Many others do not stand up so well under close inspection by various authors. We only have to look at the influence they had on Elvis.........just about none. LOL.
I would recommend Scotty's book to all Elvis fans. Of course having been reading books about Elvis since I bought my first in 1962 I can only say how little we all really know about the man.
Yes, not everyone carried a camera to Elvis meet-ups. LOL.
DJ Fontana and Bill Black must figure. And all those that treated Elvis with respect.

True JJ.
I do agree that it is a very slim possiblity that Moore met or even really knew Elvis in the 70's.
But....if he is claiming that type of nonsense in his book then it is unfortunate no one had a camera! lol
Hey....
Maybe Moore spent time with Elvis when as Ali says, he used creep off and spent days with him! Again, no cameras to bak that up......BUT IT HAPPENED! lol

Back to topic. Scotty is a genuine guy. Just see how Elvis and he interacted on the 1968 Comeback Special.
Elvis fans can purchase his book and get some of the real history, first hand.

The genuine people in Elvis' life?
Jess
Thanks to everyone who replied. I wasn't really sure who was genuine and who wasn't, apart from certain members of his own family.
I cant believe no one has mention Billy Smith. He was the only one Elvis wanted around in the last few months cause he trusted him the most.I truely believe he would have done anything for Elvis(Billy almost lost his marriage due to elvis). Many of the Memphis mafia members would had jumped in frount of bullet to protect him.I have no one who would do that for me(fire it maybe)Im always reading about Elvis"s friends being put down, but Elvis sure did let Red West down big time! but I think Billy and Red was genuine.Id have them on my team!
