Thread: Mexican Sundial Jumpsuit (1974 and 1977)

The sundial reads 8-16. A very significant jumpsuit that any informed fans on Elvis' spirituality will be reverent to.

You don't know why Elvis wore it? He was *meant* to wear it. I really believe God picked out Elvis' numbers as he does with all of us, and this was God's way of telling the world Elvis was leaving us and even gave us numbers of that day. The greatest jumpsuit because I and many others believe it was inspired. Just too significant in numerological terms to be a coincidence.

Elvis would agree with people like me. It's interesting that you have '777' at the end of your username by the way!

EDIT: I just realized my post above began the 8th page of this thread. The 8th! Woah, what a coincidence ha!

    God bless,

Although numerology and other such coincidences exist it is highly unlikely due to the fact the Mexican Sundial was actually created in 1974, would god have made/influenced such a design 3 years prior?

I think it's too easy to say that the "Mexican Sudial" is an ugly suit. If one knows the background of the Aztec Calendar, that has been used as a base for this design, then you can only look in awe of the many details it contains. I do know that a lot of people asociate this suit with Elvis' final year and that therefor this suit has a negative image. But it's plain, meaningful, hystorically correct and not as over the top as some other designs.

I do believe that people should take Elvis' taste and wishes in consideration, more than their own personal opinion about what Elvis should have worn and not. Remember we live more than 3 decades later. It's easy to look back and say what would have been best. Try to look with the eyes of the fan of the seventies. Besides that, Elvis didn't like the two-pieces. They did not give him the freedom that the jumpsuit gave him. He despiced the 1975 Two-pieces and threatned to fire Bill Belew if he would not come up with something else. Of course, everybody has the right to say what he likes or not. But I also believe we should NOT go into what Elvis should have done.

Yes, the material used on the Sundial suit is a durable blended wool/polyester stretch gabardine. It is almost impossible to find today. You can easily find wool/polyester gabardine, but not with the stretch twill weave. Twill weave is identified by diagonal "lines" within the material itself.

Wool was preferred because of it's fluidity, weight and ability to mold and hold form for tailoring. The polyester element was needed for stretch. Some suits were made from blended wool/polyester knit. When you see the suits up close, you can tell they were not all made from the same stuff.

i remember the first time i saw this suit in person @ graceland , no doubt it is a dazzler. I think ELVIS came back to this suit simply because he fell in love with it , all over again. It is an elaborate suit , and one you can clearly see needs to be repaired , i wonder why they didn`t have this done before putting this on display.

    Leroy:
I´m not sure what do you mean by freedom made by jumpsuits like Mexican Sundial. I´d understand it in case of light simple jumpsuits like from early era 1970 maybe up to 1972.... Theme jumpsuits are heavy suits - that weight (approx 25kgs?) badly influenced that freedom. No need to mention his physical shape on last tours when he clearly struggle even with kneel down the stage to fan... He was just walking on the stage, when you see that pain expression during If You Love Me in Rapid City, you know how hard job it was to face the reality and with press comparing him to early 70s when he was still healthy man.

i think that Elvis chose this suit for the final tour and maybe he felt it was his last tour and wanted to have it as his last suit incase he wasn't able to finish the tour atleast it would be in pics as the last worn suit. The suit itself i believe he chose because of the coloring of gold and its very ornate visually if you look at a full view with the leg pattern. he probably felt it looked very majestic in appearance and saved it from '74 as it would look and portray him better being 3 yrs older being not so flashy as the tiger, eagle, dragon, ect..., it is also a symbol of Time which may or not been his thought on saving it till he felt may be the last tour. The reason the embriodered suits had no arm design is because the jeweled suit had there time and needed to be a change from the others lines, the same with the capes, they became more ornated and weighted and only were worn at the end of the show. the embriods just had a more sleek look with no arm design.

This is an amazing suit when you see it in reality as i did at Graceland but despite everything i think the design while ornate and beautiful really didnt flatter Elvis . It really pronounced his weight even in 74 . From what i have read their was no great deep meaning for Elvis wearing this suit in 77 . It was simply that only a few of his jumpsuits fit anymore . So he had little choice in what suits to wear . only a few had been altered to fit him .
