Today I bought Alfred Wertheimers "Elvis at 21" A large and heavy hardback book. The most expensive book I ever bought!
But what a beauty! If you have a chance of purchasing it please do.
It's 14x11 and a half inches. Not the largest Elvis book we have but maybe the most impressive!
I will be enjoying exploring it for the next week!
Here's a sample picture. A little dark but nevertheless.............

I have the paperback version from1979. On the back of my copy it says the price for this is £3.95. My copy is called Elvis 56 - In The Beginning by Alfred Wertheimer. I don't have that close up photo of yours in my book. That must be new to the book.
I just looked at the price of this book on the Amazon bookshop. Today it's nearly £135. Now that is expensive for a book. I hope it's not a misprint. No way I am going to buy a book at that price.

I think Elvis at 21 is an upgraded version of Elvis 56 - In The Beginning by Alfred Wertheimer. It mostly the same photo's and chapters. There are two listed on the Amazon. One is nearly ?135 and another is down to ?22. Is the expensive copy a limited edition with more pages? Why is there a big difference in the price? I would still wait a little longer to buy on the internet.

It's a different kettle of fish altogether :-)
I have Elvis '56. 157 Pages paperback.
"Elvis at 21" is 253 pages and weighs about 2 Kilos!
It's a luxury item. There are many more new glossy photos included. It cost 53 Euros here in Ireland, in Chapters bookstore.
I have not read the text yet.
When reading about the book elsewhere I was cynical, but as soon as I picked it up and glanced through the pages I was seduced by the quality and the photos. The text looks promising with a brief biog account of the photographer Alfred Wertheimer.
This is another sample I'll not post more because of possible copyright infringement.

Thanks Maurice. I liked the old paperback version. There was a lot of backstage photo's never seen before in the 1979 paperback. I too like hard back books. I still wait for the price to go down. This price will make fans think before buying. There is the cheaper version but has it less pages than the limited version?

I could not or would not afford the Limited edition![]()
I don't know if there are more pages or if it is handsigned by Alfred Wertheimer? Maybe a wealthy Elvis fan will let us know?![]()
Last time I was in Devon....... beautiful Torquay, was 1962!
I have a b/w photo, taken by the harbour.
They are beautiful photos, thanks for letting us know, Maurice.
I especially like the photo of Elvis at the piano, as the photo has lots of depth and mood to it. One can feel that they are there, with him, listening quietly, while he picks out the notes. Moving.
Jess
You are welcome Jess.
The photo of Elvis at the piano caught my eye in the bookshop and that made up my mind about purchasing it.
I may try a B/W Acrylic paint Sketch of it later. It's a very atmospheric photo and would make a great poster!
I love piano music and can just imagine Elvis playing those deep bass notes with the sound of the piano filling the empty hall with sonorous music.
The limited edition (numbering 1,800) is signed by the author. The differences are:
- five additional gatefolds; four in color, special vellum sheet signed & numbered
- Portfolio case with elegant foil stamping, and a ribbon closure, containing 3 limited photographic prints
- Bonus 56 page hardcover archive of Elvis's stint in the U.S.Army ; Elvis Ships Out
- The book is enclosed in a collector's clamshell box.
Any Scans T_J or links to the deluxe version?
How much on Ebay? LOL.
Thanks for the info.
It's a very nice book, but nothing we haven't all seen before. The quality of the photos are wonderful. There was only one photo in the book that I had not seen before. I will buy this book one day.
I dream a world where man no other man
will scorn. Where LOVE will bless the earth
and peace its paths adorn...
Unfortunately no scans of the additional content/design. The publisher's site (where I got the info) is:

It doesn't offer any more details on the extras than those I posted though.
Thanks T_J, Appreciated.
But the price of the limited Edition!
My 53 Euro copy will do me fine. I'm enjoying browsing through the book and unlike Tommy have seen a lot of photos I have never seen before...and I haven't missed too many in my 50 years of looking :-)
But the whole package is so well produced it must be one of the most impressive and classy Elvis Presley books ever to grace the shelves of bookstores.
i was very disapointed as there are way to many shots we had in previous works, i counted about 8 that havn't bin seen before, it's nice to have em in one big book i guess.
