I don't know the reason, but I suspect its similar to why He wouldn't do Interviews. The Colonel didn't like Elvis to speak with the press because
as long as he never publicly stated his opinions on issues, then people were
free to think he was on their side , no matter what side that was, and you didn't lose a portion of your fans (Ala The Dixie Chicks) for speaking out . It kept a bigger then life illusion alive. I suspect he didn't do award shows for a couple of reasons, one, He'd been snubbed by them a couple of times in the past when he should have gotten one for Rock N Roll songs, and two by not showing up he remained a bigger then life Mystery to people. I think that is
also part of the reason a lot of folks came to view Elvis as almost a God like presence. In fact Google Church of Elvis sometime for Kicks and you'll see how far out some have gotten on that subject.

Also Parker never wanted Elvis to do anything like this for free. Nixon wanted Elvis to perform at the White House and Parker supposedly told them he would give them a rock bottom price of $25,000.00 They told him he did not understand,
"No one gets payed to perform at the W.H. its an honor" He supposedly sent them the reply,
"You don't understand Elvis Presley does not perform for free"
Except for non-political charity work Parker just would not allow it.

I think Parker got a point here.
If Elvis could have helped people like he did in 1975 with the benefit concerts, you are talking about something else.
Now he doesn't do anything except for entertaining the president...
I'd like to go to Graceland
    Memphis,Tennessee

Well Parker may have had a point, but he carried it way to far I think. Many artists at least send a video taped message of thanks to awards shows if they know they can't be there so the show has it in case this artist wins. Parker could have at least allowed this.
But how cool would it have been if he had been allowed to attend! To see Elvis in front of the whole music industry performing for them. It would have been so great for him.
As for the presidential request I think that should have been allowed by Parker. It is an honor of the highest level to be asked no matter who is President, and since Elvis had a small relationship with Nixon it would have been the right thing to do it seems looking back.
But besides the money angle Parker did not want to mix politics with Elvis for fear of turning someone off.

Parker really held Elvis back in my opinion. Elvis indeed needed him at the beginning. Elvis wouldnt leave due to his honourable loyalty. But if Elvis would of left & did his own thing. I believe he would have takin more serious roles that challenged his acting skills & he would have became a better actor & would of made some oscar like films. Elvis performing at the Grammys would have been steller. Too bad.
