Well, that's one take on it. My veiw is that HD was never a very good tune, it's just the energy of EP and his back-up group (and slightly out-of-key they were) that put the thing over.

    It's just the dynamic delivery.

Perfect rock tune? Not by a long-shot. EP's got way-better than that.

It sold millions when first released as a single and the vast majority of Elvis Presley fans regard it as a real classic. So do I.

I think Elvis sings it brilliantly

I agree 100%. Its like a train 90 miles an hour and it roars at you. It is nothing like the Mama Thornton original which is more bluesy. It rocks and rolls from start to finish. Classic, of course.

Yep that sums it up. A real roller coaster ride of a song! With the great "Don't Be Cruel" making the HMV 78rpm single double A side, an Elvis Presley bargain!!!

Thanks for the birthday greetings Sonny and everyone. I was far too busy yesterday to acknowledge them all. :-) Maurice.

I wouldn't say there are many Elvis rock tunes that are way better. It's a perfect recording. Consider that it was recorded and released in 1956. There weren't too many songs as explosive as that around - probably only Little Richard matches that level of energy. It makes Rock Around the Clock sound tame.

You have to consider when this song was released to understand it's brilliance. To many people it sounds dated.A song like that couldnt happen now and would be a flop. However back in 1956,that song might as well came from another planet.I would go as far to say one of the very first "hard rock" songs ever.It was like a punch in the face back then.Shocking for it's time.A true bona fide Presley classic that will always be associated with him. It's a shame what he did to that song in his later years.

It's not really one of my favourites but it is inexorably linked to Elvis in a raw and classy way

Hound Dog is a good song with alot of energy in it...that energy was lost later in the 70's,but i like the version Elvis gave on the Cbs Tv special in 1977
I'd like to go to Graceland
    Memphis,Tennessee

Hound Dog in 1956 was an explosion going off in popular music. It was raw, unbridled, passionate. The song will be forever linked to Elvis, and whether he liked it or not, will always be one of the top songs of his career. Elvis knew the song was expected of him from his fans in concert, even though later in his life, at times he didn't put as much effort into it. It is hard to perform the same song in hundreds of shows and not get tired of doing it. I think Elvis viewed Hound Dog as a double edged sword; he wanted to be remembered for more than just that, which of course he was. The importance of Hound Dog shouldn't be overlooked. It helped make rock and roll a viable and profitable music form, much to the shagrin of naysayers that viewed rock with contempt and treated it as a passing fad.
