I'm sorry to burst your bubble Elvis2001Net, but Bill didn't design this suit. The design came from Gene Doucette, and it was HIS bathroom floor tile.

I think it's one of the coolest because it was so bright. Great suit.

Who is Gene Douchette? How many other suits did he design for Elvis? I always thought that it was Belew.

    Re: Black Conquistador Jumpsuit (1972)

Gene Doucette is a New York designer who at first helped out Bill Belew with designing the patterns on Elvis suit. Because Bill got more and more orders from other celebreties from the show world Gene took over the designing for Elvis in late 1971. His first complete designs were the "Firework Suits" from 1971 end 1972. From that point on Gene was in charge. Bill would send blank suits to Gene. The only exception are the 1975 Navy Blue two-pieces. They were designed by Bill because Gene quitt for a while. If you are interested in more details about it, I met Gene Doucette in 2006 and he talked very openly about it. I wrote a piece about this meeting, complete with pictures. I'll be happy to share it.

Leroy, please tell more. This is very interesting and we know so little about how it actually worked. Indeed Bill is always credited, whereas Gene did most of the work.

Did you know that Gene Doucette also worked on the costumes of the 80s show Punky Brewster?
That was great to see his name appear in a totally different context.

Leroy, Thanks! I would love to hear about that meeting. I am just beside myself. I always thought it was Bill who did it all.
