Reporter: There are rumors when Elvis was in the Army in Germany that Elvis and the Sergeant he was driving for got so cold one night during maneuvers that they pulled a tarp over the Jeep as the engine of the Jeep was running to stay warm. Is it true that the Army used the publicized tonsillitis hospital visit to cover up the fact that Elvis almost died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning resulting from the fumes that came into the Jeep from a hole in the floorboard?
Joe Esposito: The Unit that we were in Germany used to go into the field quite a bit. One night in the winter, Elvis was out on maneuvers as a scout driver and he and the Sergeant decided to pull over to the side to take a little nap. So, they covered the jeep with a tarp and left the motor running so they could warm up to the heat of the engine. So, after awhile they passed out from the carbon monoxide gas, which is as you know, quite deadly. Now, here is the strange part. While Elvis and the Sergeant were lying there unconscious, a really strong wind came and blew the tarp off the jeep. That's what saved their lives. That really happened. They didn't pull the tarp off themselves as so many people believe. As for the tonsillitis, well, he got that because of the extreme cold out on maneuvers. So, he went to the hospital to get that taken care of. So, the story that it was a cover up was not true. However, it is true about the gas and the tarp and everything. But the strangest **************** thing about it is that the wind blew the tarp off. Talk about divine intervention.

Joe's story only illustrates what many feel about EP: in some way god did watch over him. He was just blessed for many years.
is he rellevant, this guy was going to be unemployed by E.P. had he lived , everyone was told that he was going to take time off, ESPOSITO always the winer that he was and remains , went around looking for employment elsewhere, it was common knoledge that him and E.P. were not close in years, especially since he dragged him through the courts and sewed him, for a buisness venture that he solely concocted, what atrue piece of s..t he really is , i have nothing but contempt for this sack of s..t. It seems that he has done nothing with his life[a host at a casino] what a clown.

Joe Esposito has always tried to make himself seem to be Elvis's #1 buddy in all the years that they worked together when, in actuality, Joe was spying on Elvis behind his (Elvis's) back at the Colonel's request...

I've said it before and I'll say it again...if Elvis ever had a best friend (other than his mother) it was Billy Smith (especially in the final year or two of Elvis's life) and not "Diamond" Joe Esposito...
Yes, I agree! Joe Esposito "assumes" he was Elvis' best friend...why else would he have done "Elvis - His Best Friend Remembers"..
In my opinion, I don't think he was a true friend to Elvis...and he continues to only worry about making $$$$$ nothing more...

Putting personal opinions aside, is there really a need for the cursing? Say what you want about Elvis or anyone in his life, but the filth has no place on TCB I think.
On a different note, I was contacted by a Mr. Lombardy for a short interview for "Celebrate Elvis". I think this project will be a very good one. Again, just my opinion.
What kind of interview, vulcandude? Yes, it could be a good project as long as it's something new and not something we've read so many times before!

I completely agree with you Tony.
Billy Smith was definitley the closest to Elvis, especially the last year, or two of Elvis' life..i believe they said he spent up to 18 to 20 hours a day with Elvis..by the end, Diamond Joe was far from Elvis' best friend...i'd also like to think that Charlie Hodge was a very close and dear friend to Elvis.

It was really just a straight forward kind of interview. I was asked a bit about myself, how and when I first became a fan of Elvis', and if I had seen him in concert. Sadly, I never did get to see Elvis live.....
Espoito's latest book is terrible.
Poor quality paper, poor quality printing and it barely holds the readers attention.
I am still waiting to be impressed by a book Espoito puts his name to.
I've got two myself, don't like either of them. The later one is slightly better because he just compiled a bunch of interviews in it as opposed to just the world according to Joe. I never cared much for the way Joe Treated fans back in the whole "Elvis is alive" craze. Sure, he may have thought it was silly,so did I, but it made him money appearing and if he didn't want to talk to people and have them asking questions then he shouldn't have. He was borderline rude on Larry King a couple of times and not much better on the Geraldo specials.
