    Hmv Question?

Could someone please explain the difference between hmv gold and silver labels on Elvis"s early singles in the UK. Many Thanks

    I only saw the turquoise - bluish/green HMV 78rpm singles of 1956/57.

All HMV singles on 45 rpm from "Heartbreak Hotel" released in March 1956 to "Paralyzed" released in August 1957 were released on the Gold label. The last two HMV singles - "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy" and "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone" were released on the Silver label only. The early Gold singles were all re-released in 1957 on the Silver label.

I think the rarest of the HMV singles would be "Mystery Train/I Forgot To Remember To Forget" which was released in February 1957, this was for export to Europe. It was available in the UK by special order but few people at that time were aware that the record was available and that it was only released on 45 rpm, the old 78 rpm was still popular at that time.

Im suprised so many hmv 45 are for sale I thought 78s were the main format in the 50s but 45 must have been more popular than I original thought. But the introduction of picture sleeves must have been the big boost. Was" love me tender" the first P/sleeve in the uk ? anyone

You should try to get your hands on the book ELVIS UK, released in 1987.
It gives details of Elvis' UK releases and there are pics of differing labels. One of my favourite books.
