I don't know the year, but it's after the Comeback Special; must have been shortly after in Vegas.
Anyway, I seem to recall that originally he was handed tissues by women in the audience who wanted a bit of sweat (there's footage of this somewhere). From there somebody picked up the idea to give away the scarves.
i think it began at the end of 1972...
i heard how this scarf thing started but i forgot it![]()

How it got started was the fact that Colonel wanted Elvis to give out Teddy Bears. Elvis did that for only one year and then decided to go with scarfs.
First of all we have to start at the reason why Elvis wore scarves in the first place. That was because the sweat that ran into his his eyes hurted him. He was in need of something that enabled him to whipe his face. So at first the scarves were just a necessary tool. But after whiping his face with it he discovered the people in front of him were begging for the used scarf. That's how the ball started rolling.
Im gonna guess and say from pics that I have seen, Las Vegas January 1971.
he stared wearing scarves since the comeback, and the story that i heard was , he saw englebert, wiping his sweat and then give the hankerchief to the woman in the audience[again this was what englebert said], it's not far fetched, but i would say he started for the reasons that leroy stateded, and he took note of the englebert idea[apparently ELVIS really like ENGE and vice versa, and he attended a show of ENGE in aug 72 where he requested A MAN WITHOUT LOVE, pics of him attending the show are owned by PAUL LICHTER and found in his mag memphis flash oct 72 #77. ENGE still tells this story in his live act[wether it is true or not is anyones guess].
Wow, we've got several different opinions of this so far. You brought up a pretty good topic here, GirlHappy!
well November 1970 wwas when we sould start seeing the scarfs. But Elvis wore them but tucked sometimes under the jumpsuit. Like Leory said it only took one time that one fans wanted the scarf and it went from there.
Love to all,

It seems to me that Elvis was wearing scarves before the Vegas shows as part of his fashion. Looks like he began wearing them his very first Vegas show in '69. Now, when did he start handing them out; who knows? If he was wearing them the very first show... it could have started then with him simply throwing it into the audience?

That's the same story that I have heard....and if I recall correctly, he started throwing the Teddy Bears into the audience around 1971 when he began using TEDDY BEAR live in concert...![]()
So I would have to say that the scarf thing started in late '71 or early '72??![]()

In 68 there was a fashion trend a thing called (if I remember correctly) the Apache scarf and you wore a small gold or silver metal clasp that slipped over the ends. Those are the ones you see Elvis wearing in 68. Maybe the scarf thing started there. It surely must have been cheaper and more personal than Teddy Bears to give away. I recall the kids in junior high wearing them for about a year(including me)ha ha
I find it funny to see when elvis is giving a scarf to a girl, you see all those women started to fight with each other for that scarf![]()

I get a kick out of the "quick wrist flick" he had when he tossed them he had it down to an art. I wonder how many he gave away in all?
I don't know if any of you noticed that Elvis had a beautiful chest full of sexy hair, and he looked soooo good in "charro"with his beard. His sideburns were gorgeous.....BUT.....His arms?No hair?Did he shaved them?Am I crazy?![]()
I have a framed photo were you can see his heary chest and long sideburns, but no hair in his arms.i need help I thinkJust let me know if anyone noticced the same.
Thank you.

For the Elvis 68 Special, Bill Belew who was in charge of Elvis' wardrobe suggested that Elvis wear scarves instead of ties, it would give a soft comfortable look. In the opening number "Trouble", he is wearing a scarf tied loosely. I have to admit, the scarves worked beautifully. The rest followed. He ordered scarves by the dozens & dozens in an assortment of colors.
I wonder if that's how he timed his show - by what color scarf came up next. First 30 minutes came the white, next came the yellow, & he knew when the show was coming to a close because they were blue? Just kidding, of course, but just still a thought eh?
