The idea of an Elvis airport has been around for quite a while. It has been covered by newspapers internationally. Also Memphis TV and radio.
Now considering Sillerman's massive plans for Graceland would it be a good time to raise the subject again?

If Sillerman backs it, then maybe. However one has to be careful because of Martin Luther King's ties with Memphis. Elvis was after all only an entertainer, Martin Luther King was instrumental in the cival rights movement.

Memphis TV Ran a poll and the Elvis Airport idea got over 76% of the vote. We could have The King Airport of course, honouring both men.
I think Washington DC should honour King.
The City of Memphis benifits from all the Elvis related tourism and has done little except name part of a road to recognise Elvis's importance to the city. Their reluctance to agree to the airport being renamed after Elvis is very strange indeed.
Maybe Sillerman will use his influence?

But Elvis is connected with Memphis in a positive way. He lived there for the greatest part of his live. Elvis made Memphis famous. Martin Luther King was born in the state of Georgia and was killed in Memphis. Although I am a great admirer of dr. Martin Luther King and the things he stood for I would make a choice in favor to Elvis.
I know what your saying Leroy. But this is an Elvis Forum, with Elvis fans so it will be biased here. I'm sure the city of Memphis won't want to miss out on any economic benefits, but I do feel their reluctance to rename the airport stems from King's assasination.
Dr King was honoured in Washington DC recently. I think that's where he will be remembered most.
It's a mystery why Memphis does not take the bull by the horns and recognise Elvis as it's most famous citizen, bar none.
Snobbery of course raises it's ugly head. There are people in Memphis not keen on Elvis at all. But the tide of history is against them.
My friend at the Memphis Business Journal would run the story again if the idea was to get a lot of support.

To be honest only a strong push from EPE and CKX and can see this happen. Have you contacted either of them to get their views?
Jack Soden of EPE said they would waive their fee for Elvis's name if the Airport used it. So they are well aware of the ongoing campaign.
Sometimes it takes an outsider to get things done...........the Tupelo statue is a case in point (y)

A statue is one thing, an airport which caters for millions of people a year is quite another. Waving the fee is quite noble of Jack Soden - but indicates he hasnt much support for it. Maybe Sillerman will. They need to fix up Graceland and the surrounding area before they focus on anything else. The Airport would be nice, but I am looking forward to what will happen in Las Vegas in a few years time.
If the city of Memphis are not prepared to rename the airport - and EPE aren't interested in supporting the idea, then their must be more than meets the eye to the whole situation. I suspect some type of local politics or something. Besides, Elvis has proved enough. Having the John Lennon airport in Liverpool is not going to promote him more or less, it's a nice touch though. However securing Elvis' long-term economic viability is paramount as far as EPE and CKX are concerned.

Cadillac King, I think I may have thought it all out before I contacted the "Memphis Business Journal" with the idea.
That publication ran the story first in 2001 followed by TV, Radio and newspapers as far away as Australia .
I met the MBJ reporter for lunch the following year (2002) in Memphis and discussed the matter further.
The arguements against renaming the airport from the Memphs authorities were very poor indeed..mere excuses. I guess it's basically down to snobbery:-)
Sillerman's money may make a huge difference to the Graceland area. The airport campaign is five years old now and I'm not getting any younger.......................but I have grandchildren................... and a great-grandson.........all Elvis fans ;)
Don't forget, Elvis always referred to himself as just an entertainer. He even acknowldged how hard it is to live up to an image.Quote:

Many Airports are named after Stars and POLITICIANS! John Wayne, Louis Armstrong, JFK, Ronald Reagan, etc.

Yes, I'm surprised Memphis City has not really honoured Elvis to the degree many would have expected.
Just naming part of a highway after him cost very little indeed.

This honor would be very well deserved. Considering he made Memphis famous all over the world, and I would credit him with building half of Memphis from the tourism he provides.....We all know their is only one reason to go to Memphis in the first place. :P
