Well, I had to chime in to say that I agree wholeheartedly! It is without a doubt my favorite song from the American sessions, and that is of course saying something.
I am pretty sure that you are hearing a keyboard in that song.
To my knowledge, only one take of that song has ever been released (on some bootleg or another there is supposedly an alternate, but I believe it is the undubbed master sped up just a tad). That is likely all that exists on tape, but surely there were other attempts? I'm really not a sessions expert in the least though, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong or shed further light on this.
Thank you very much for the information.
:happy_ny:
I don't know the answer about that instrument but I'm glad to see someone else wondering...I've asked that question for years
I just tried to find some info on this song in Ernst's book. As far as I can tell, it isn't known how many takes were recorded, nor which take is the master.
Of course I don't know which sound it is that you all are hearing and wondering if it is a keyboard, but that instrument is definitely heard on that track, and Ronnie Milsap was playing it (and also contributing some vocals).
Hope this helps.
Gentle On My Mind, yes that?s a favoiurite of mine too, great tune, great arrangement, great lyrics, good performer haha...
I guess what you mean is a rare organ efect, its used on Promised Land too, is that one the one you mean? there are two organs used, one recorded on the original live in the studio recording, and the other one "the one that you probably mean" overdubbed later on. That organ efect was used by some other artist, Ive heard it on some records by "The Band".
Here is a web page with some information about takes of this tune:

Overthere just look for the 60's sessions, then look for the Studio Sessions for RCA Jan 14-15 1969 and click on Gentle On My Mind, great web page is that one by the way.
Best wishes for this 2006 for all.
