well, my point of starting the thread wasn't about anyone's religion or comparing current ones or offending people.

But looking at it from a cultural perspective - knowing that older civilizations had different beliefs that are practiced now and casting an eye to the future.


the people who posted in that spirit certainly provided more varied answers than I have gotten in other forums where I've posed the question.

I am not starting any religions or recruiting & it's not about Elvis' well known position on the subject.

Just interested in a cultural anthropological discussion about Elvis as a cultural force

I think it was actually a valid question and an interesting topic. I have a friend who is pretty much agnostic and about 10yrs ago he told me that he thought that one day Elvis would be a religion. So, it was something I've discussed before actually.

Don't you think that the Elvis religion was born in 1956 with help of Colonel Parker? Look at all the people that paid to see him and still do, buy anything with his face on it and still do, read every book that come out about him and showed up for his funeral.
Let's face it,there's a lot of people who know more about Elvis and quote Elvis than they know and can quote The Bible.

No, ELVIS is not a religion, he would not want this.

Elvis made it very clear in concert that in his mind there was only one true King-and he was in heaven......he would not like, nor encourage anyone to see him as anything more than a human being who like all humans had good points and flaws.

Well that was quite an interesting read, but no, I don't think Elvis will become a future religion.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. Regardless of what Elvis or anyone else WANTED, it's already pretty obvious that Elvis' legacy and the truths and myths about him have persisted (at full strength, too) for a LONG time after his death, so in some theoretical future he could very easily at least be granted sainthood in whatever religion's predominant. There's even the resurrection myth...ELVIS IS ALIVE and all that. Interesting theory, anyway, even if the overall answer is that Presleytarianism is unlikely to become an actual religion.

Still, the way some of the nuttier Elvis fans out there (and there are, unfortunately, plenty of 'em) behave it'd be easy enough to suggest that he IS a religious figure to some. Regardless, if archaeologists and historians a thousand or two thousand years from now -- should our species manage to last that long in any significant number -- did some digging and managed to retrieve intact any of our media, electronic or otherwise, they could pretty reasonably conclude that this Elvis Presley fellow was worshiped as at least some kind of minor deity.

Could make a cool movie. Planet of the Elvises.
