Elvis day by day, Guralnick and Jorhensen
Elvis and the Memphis Mafia, MM guys
The Tupelo years, B. Burk

Excellent chocies everyone. See I created this thread, as I'm working on building my book collection and wanted to see what were most essential :D
Peter Guralnick's books, Last train to Memphis and Careless Love, seem to be the most acurate and well researched. He includes quite a bit of information from many many other books in his 2 volumes. If you look through his list of references and people he interviewed, it is just amazing. There is almost no one Peter doesn't interview for his books and his meticulous work is very evident.
Aside from Peter's book, I enjoyed Jerry Schillings book b/c he really comes off as sincere writing about his friend and the years they spent together. Jerry's really the most compassionate of the MM.
I did read the body guard book, which was interesting b/c it was written while Elvis was still alive, while many of the tales were still fresh in the minds of those that shared them; however, they I am sure that they were embellished. I also read Elvis and the MM, but I also think many of the tales that were written are embellished, from the standpoint of who was telling the stories.
Stick with Peter's books. You will feel as though you got the right angle of the story.
:blink:Elvis and Gladys, Elvis revelations from the Memphis Mafia, In the twilight of Memory by June Jaunico (not sure if that,s the correct spelling of her last name):hmm:Elvis and Me, Elvis,Why dont they leave you alone?Elvis last train to Memphis. O.K. Top 5, I'll get back to you on that.
for biographical information:
Peter Guralnick Careless Love and Last Train to Memphis
Elaine Dundee's Elvis and Gladys
Alanna Nash's Elvis and the Colonel
for pictures:
anything by Al Wertheimer
Elvis Unseen by Todd Slaughter (I think that's right, the uberfan)
anything by any of the Stanley family should have the pictures cut out and the text tossed in the trash
anything by any of the MM guys should be taken with a huge grain of salt - they all suffer from a very limited POV of "I was the only person Elvis could confide in"
they all tend to make themselves more central and exclude or minimize everyone else
so, you'd need to read several to balance them all
If you are only wanting pictures and not alot of detail then I have to go with "The Life of Elvis Presley" by Sean Shaver. It is stunning. I was lucky enough to win one on Ebay without having to take out a loan at the bank.;):D:D(y)
