Elvis plays Chad Gates, the heir to a pineapple fortune, who returns to the islands after spending two years in the Army.
He's determined not to do what his mother wants, which is taking on a job in the family's pineapple business, settle down and marry a girl of his own social position.
Instead Elvis gets a job as a tourist guide, for the agency where his girlfriend Joan Blackman works. His first assignment is escorting four pretty schoolgirls and their teacher around the islands.
Everything is solved in the end, with Elvis marrying Joan in a beautifully filmed boat wedding, with them hoping to open their own travel agency.
Location filming commenced on March 17, 1961, in Hawaii and ended on April 17.
A working title for the movie was: "Hawaiian Beach Boy".
Juliet Prowse was originally signed to play the Maile part, but couldn't agree on personal terms.
Blue Hawaii reached No. 2 on Variety's weekly topgrossing chart.
Producer Hal Wallis ordered a 10pm curfew for the actresses because they started to look tired on the morning sets. They had been partying with Elvis and his entourage each night.
Joan Blackman also appeared in Elvis' 10th movie: "Kid Galahad".

This is "THE" Elvis movie for me. Yes, it set the pattern for all the Elvis musicals that were yet to come, but I enjoyed the film in '61 and even after
repeated viewings over the years I still love it. Lots of fun, lovely scenery,
great supporting cast and an excellent soundtrack.
Chadwick's home from the warrrr! :lmfao:
:notworthy Blue Hawaii was the very first film I saw Elvis in, It was brilliant and from then on I was hooked. Not only were the songs good, but the scenery well...WOW...and the cast brilliant especially his mum. And the things they came out with. Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant.
;) I love all of Elvis's film's but must admit this is a very amusing film, even though I have watched it many many times it still makes me laugh. (y)
About Blue Hawaii!!
I love this picture!!
Regards from Peru,
This is a great Elvis movie for sure :D.
This is a fun movie with great scenery....
Is it true that Joan Blackman was Elvis' least favourite co-star or is this just a rumour...
Well, I would go with the rumour on this one...
Just look at the backstage pics of Elvis and Joan in the picture section. It's hard to imagine the story they didn't like each other.
For as far as I know Stella Stevens (Girls, Girls, Girls) was his least favorite co-star.
Sorry, Sonny....I just saw your response...
Thanks, for letting me know...I had no idea Stella Stevens was his least favourite..
here's a clip of Can't Help Falling In Love (edited)...
Thanks for posting the clip Franny,,,, sure a beautiful one!!!! :D Dovey
You're welcome, Dovey!:)
It was a nice clip...very different...
Angela Lansbury who played Elvis's mom in the movie was 10 years, 9 months and 8 days older than Elvis!
I love this film, how perfect does Hawaii look, beautiful.Great work by Elvis as well.x
I think I would go with rumor, too. Joan was also in Kid Galahad with Elvis. If they didn't get along I don't think she would have agreed to another movie with him.
