If the Colonel had done his 68 special with Elvis doing Christmas songs, probably having a bad looking Xmas set and looking back on the show we'd of prob cringed about and it all making Elvis look more of a joke etc If it had gone ahead as CTP wanted Would elvis career of been... not over but seen as out of touch and finished?
People talk of the '68 Special as the comeback. And it was.
But only to a point.
The show, plus the next couple of years of strong songs like Suspicious Minds brought Elvis back to the public's consciousness.
But, by '70/71, Elvis' relevance had dimmed again and he got into years of concerts. A 70s rut, as compared with the 60s movie rut.
The Colonel - and Elvis himself - should've capitalised further on the '68 Special with better and more relavant songs/albums etc, along with a world tour and so many other things.
Aloha notwithstanding, the '68 Special was Elvis' last serious professional hurrah and should've led to greater things. There is no reason why Elvis shouldn't have dominated the charts in the 70s like he did in the 50s. But it was not to be ...

In junior high school in 1970 we had a jukebox in the cafeteria for dances and on Fridays they let us play it at lunch (the money was used for special school promotions) The "Wonder of You" and "in the Ghetto" were on the jukebox and they got played all the time. I agree after 69- a world tour should have come in 1970, the time was right and people were clamoring for it over seas like never before. So sad.
