Since this is about my hometown, I gotta reply on this.
A lot of folks don't realise that Memphis was the first city that freed slaves migrated to after the Civil War.
Memphis was the first black populated city in US history. Then Scarlet Fever came through in the 1890's and killed off more than 100,000 black folks.
Memphis is today, the largest black populated city in the US, per capita.
Memphis was the first US city in the south to have an all black radio station. The same station that played the very first Elvis record, WDIA, which is still in operation today!
The lion on the MGM logo is from Memphis.
The Blues originated in Memphis and the Mississippi Delta not in Chicago as some think.
Memphis is named after the capital of Memphis, Egypt.
As for those pics....they don't do justice the the Memphis of today. Especially downtown.
