He cut those lines as they would not have been acceptable coming from "Elvis". Who at the time, as far as most were concerned was "Squeaky Clean".

I'm thinking Elvis truly and completely related to this song, resulting in a very beautiful and almost haunting performance. While he knew he could relate to "I take my pills to ease the pain" part, he didn't want the rest of the world to think he was actually doing that, and chose to omit this part from his version. I wished he would of returned to this song in his concerts from time to time.
Elvis' version is the best. As it's been written, when he liked a song, it was all about phrasing & Elvis was the best at phrasing a lyric! Leon Russell' s was my second fav.
