I am not sure whether this has been posted before.
But i was thinking, if Elvis was alive, would music today be different ? Would the attitudes of youngsters change towards Elvis and that era of music?
If he kept touring..would music have moved on ?
Just a curious question, i am interested in your thoughts, Thank you. :notworthy :king:
We can never be sure of course, but when I think back to 1977, 1978, it was the beginnin of the punk time.
I think that that new music - if you liked it or not - got it's oppurtunity to grow because of Elvis no longer being there.
If Elvis wouldn't have passed away he might have "grown" music wise, and gone with the flow. A change is noticeable with songs like Way Down, and also Moody Blue, which could remind you of certain Abba tunes.

You make some interesting comments and observations.I would differ one thing.I think his death actually got Elvis more exposure and thrust his music back into the limelight.I dont think his being alive would have altered the course that music was taking back then.Let's be honest where he stood musically back in 1977.He was far removed from a heavy hitter when it came to the charts at that time.he had become basically a live act.His influence on contemporary music at that time was minimal at best.Except for the fans Elvis really had kinda dropped off the radar back then.His death actually put him back into people's minds.If anything it got people thinking about how important he was at one time.It's tough to say what Elvis would have done if he had lived.When he died he hadnt shown any signs of changing so you dont have many clues.Quote:

Thanks for all your interesting comments (y) I believe that Teengers would have an open mind to that music if he were alive. Like Johnny Cash, when Walk The Line cam out, it put Johnny Cash back up and more popular. I believe if Elvis were alive he would still be doing concerts :clap:
Jak unfortunately is right - Elvis wasn't getting the ratings he was in the early 70's here in the U.S. as he was overseas - a shame to us!
I don't think things would have much changed. I think Elvis would have kept on touring as long as he was able, keeping with the new stuff out there - in his own way of course, but that the new music out there would have developed in the same natural course that it did.
:doh: Jep, I agree with you Jak and Diane, it is a real shame that Elvis is not more popular here in the USA. It often makes me feel sad to think that he is so alive in the UK and not here. That is one reason that the internet is so special to me... I have had the pleasure of meeting some truly awesome Elvis fans from the UK and around the world. Dovey ;)
He is no more alive in the Uk than in the USA -believe me. It is so hard to find Elvis things in shops, just the same Old thing. Here, where i live, i can't find no Elvis weekends, if there are any, it's once in a blue moon. I do not believe than he is more popular here than he is in the UK, And this comes from a 16 year old who lives amongst other youngsters who believe he is just another singer, there is nothing special to him.
I wish Elvis was alive because i believe people around me would like me for liking Elvis (y)
I didn't think it change that much after he died, it's change because of time, He wasn't on top 100 Hit's in USA , he was top in music country for few years after his death.
The Guitar Man Lp was to get younger to Elvis, it didn't in USA, It work oversea ones.

Well we will never know but I think Elvis would have moved on and change with the times we are living just like Tom Jones did some years ago when he released that album with duets with today singers and bands. It did very well for him at least in my country and kind of renovate and freshened his "old man once a legend" image. He is great live in concert even today and knowing how Elvis always was ahead of his times could have been greater than him if he had lived and got healthy and in shape again. That he wasn?t doing so well by 77 doesn?t mean that his carreer was finished. All the musicians and singers have up and downs during their life and many come out of the bad times later and have number one hits again...

there is an elvis week in hemsby and they have it every year also in portcawl wales every year both in september i think.

Difficult question. IMO Elvis had a habit of getting in a rut then doing something unexpected which reinvigorated his career. Out of the Army he went into heavy movie making. Then the 68 special and return to live performing till he died. If he had lived perhaps another rabbit would have been pulled from his hat in the late 70s. But probably, if that did not happen, his records would have charted more and more on the country charts. He was already hitting the country charts pretty good from the mid 70s. From the early 80's on country was really more soft rock than country, so Elvis would have fit in really well. But I don't think he would have been instrumental in any new trends. A lot of singers have had MTV type surges in their careers since Elvis died, Tom Jones, Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash etc but those did not set the course of new music-they just gained new fans and respect.
(although how long that translated into record sales is a good question)
