elvis sang it first in 1972. imo elvis sang it better
but willie nelson's version is also very good (y)
I'd always presumed Nelson recorded it first, had never even thought to look, so thanks Geordie.
I have a great affection for Willie Nelson, love his voice, but I think his voice makes every song a different one to any one elses version. I know thats maybe a cop out but I wouldn't compare them, or maybe can't.
no problem E.P.
by the way great avatar :notworthy
Elvis Singing first, Willie's Version went to number one on Country charts
Here's some info I found on the song, "Always On My Mind", from "Elvis: His Life From A To Z":
ALWAYS ON MY MIND
Mark James, Wayne Carson and Johnny Chrstopher wrote, "Always On My Mind", for Elvis, who recorded the song on March 29, 1972 at RCA's Hollywood studios. Film of the recording session appeared in the 1981 documentary, "This Is Elvis". Although Elvis was the first to record the song, it was Brenda Lee's version (Decca 32975) that was released first. In the summer of 1972 she reached #45 on the country chart. Elvis's single release had a 13-week stay on the country chart, peaking at #16.
In 1982 Willie Nelson had an even ore successful version of "Always On My Mind" (Columbia 02741), reaching #5 on the Hot 100 chart and topping the country chart. The Country Music Association named "Always On My Mind" the Song of the Year in both 1982 & 1983. The Pet Shop Boys had a top 20 hit with the song in early 1988. (EMI-Manhattan 50123).
