Short introduction: by now we probably all know about this MDQ Session. It was was taped by Sam Philips on December 4th, 1956, when Elvis decided to visit Sun Studios and met his friends: Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. It resulted in a jam of superstars for the very first time in history and these guys performed (or at least tried to) their favorite music: rock and roll and of course gospel.
Part of this music already got realeased on the Charly label in slightly lesser sound quality. To me this music presents us with some guys doing what they like best, it's great fun to hear them talk and fool around.
This new (2006) release gives us this historic jam in it's entirety and original sequence.

I bought the Charly label CD, not realizing it was a different one. I wish I had known about this webpage at the time. I do enjoy that Cd, though, I love the chatter & fellowship. I wish that I could hear Johnny Cash, but he is included in the conversations. Thanks for your review.

Thanks for your review. Its my understanding that Johnny Cash left pretty soon after the picture around the piano was taken. He actually missed most of the jam session.

I don't believe that the full recording has been released

they were supposed to be there for hours

Johnny Cash isn't on any of the recordings I've heard

I have three different versions of these tapes

I have to admit I was a little let down when I first heard some of the MDQ tapes I got a vinyl record of it in about 1983-84 it was an overseas release that somehow got into a Record Bar. I had expected a few more whole songs and not so much jumping around-but thats what a jam session is.:D

One of the greatest jam sessions ever recorded!!! It's a must have for everyone who's interested in the music of SUN, ELvis, etc. (y)(y)(y)

The great mystery will ever be if Johnny Cash appeared or not. Carl Perkins said no, Johnny Cash himself said he did. :'(

I have the Sony BMG release from about 10 years ago. Is this new version better fidelity?
