Yes it is, there where semi pro-cameras at the MSG shows, that, because of TV studios in N.Y. covering the event for the News as this was "THE EVENT".

I have seen pro-footage taken from one of the upper seats of the Garden the night he used the Adonis Suit (Again at 3:31 you can see the same kind of camera as in the picture you recall):

Never seen pro-footage of Elvis wearing the blue suit and Elvis being filmed as close as the picture you mention suggests. Well except for this, althoug it looks more like amateur footage from somewhere in the audience (But it actually could be the same kind of camera as the one used in the previous video, except here the material is seriously damaged):

And here is another angle:

The same video camera can be seen in footage and photos from shows that MGM shot on the April tour, but I don't recall seeing the thing anywhere else. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but this suggests that perhaps the camera has something to do with "Elvis On Tour" rather than the security or VIP-booth functions suggested for it at the Garden.

Regardless of footage existing or ever existing from this camera (perhaps it was some kind of live feed, maybe of low quality, that wasn't even recorded) there's definitely video of Elvis in Buffalo in 1972 tucked away somewhere, shot on video.

It is important to notice that the Elvis on Tour team was still shooting and recording Elvis as late as August '72 in Vegas where the MSG Gold record was presented to Elvis; now that footage was never used in the film, but the audio inteviews done at the same time did appeared in the film.

Now, producers from Elvis on Tour have told many times that they wanted to film the MSG shows for the film, but they recieved the news of the event to late, and there was not time to bring the cameras and lights into the Garden, so it never happened. Yet, they did use footage from the press conference at the hilton.

He looks so good here. He seemed really happy to be playing Madison Square Garden finally.

Elvis researcher and author Joe Tunzi was asked years ago about MSG pro-footage and the camera and tripod photo here is his answer:

Question-We know that some professional footage was done at the opening show of Madison Square Garden on June 9th 1972. Some portions of this footage has been used on different projects but always heavily edited and without Elvis' vocal. Three years ago Dateline NBC used a short sequence for the first time with the original sound of Elvis performing 'Polk Salad Annie'. According to the different footages partly used on different projects and/or on T.V., they have filmed at least the following: the crowd before the show starts, The Sweet Inspirations, Elvis entering the stage, That's All Right, Proud Mary, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling and Polk Salad Annie. Do you know if the show was filmed from beginning to end with matching sound ? If not, do you know how much was actually filmed and who possibly owns that footage ?

Joe: .It sounds like you have been doing your homework. This is exactly correct. I think there may be around 30 or 40 minutes of the show with matching sound. The sound quality is not the greatest but is passable. I really can't comment on who owns it.
Question-In your excellent book 'Elvis- Encore Performance II' on page 73 we can see a camera on the stage mounted on a tripod. Do you know if this camera could be related in some manners to the previous question on the footage filmed at the opening show at Madison Square Garden ?

Joe: I believe that camera was for security purposes so they could monitor the show. It isn't related at all to the aforementioned footage.

Also there is the footage of Jonas Mekas award winning avant gard filmaker who did record at MSG with a 16 mm camera how much footage he has is unknown...but he won an award for a short film, "Mozart and Elvis" that uses some of the Elvis footage in it.

The Jonas Mekas films seems to have footage all the way through Suspicious Minds and Can't Help Falling In Love. Who knows if he still has the original unedited film rolls.

By the way, the Mekas film on Elvis looks great despite how strage some people might found it!!!

Thanks for the Tunzi info, that clears out a lot.
