Exclusive: Radio 2 plans Elvis Presley Hyde Park concert

Published Wednesday 19 May 2010 at 14:52 by Matthew Hemley

BBC Radio 2 is planning a major concert in Hyde Park to celebrate the life and music of Elvis Presley.

Details of the event have still to be confirmed by the broadcaster, but it is understood the concert - which is being held to mark what would have been Presley’s 75th birthday - will be hosted in Hyde Park this September.

It will feature an array of musical talent performing hits from Presley’s career.

Earlier this year, Radio 2 broadcast a season of documentaries to mark what would have been Presley’s 75th birthday, and a source close to the network said the idea behind the Hyde Park event is to conclude the celebrations.

The source said: “If Elvis had lived he would have been 75 this year. Radio 2 had a big Elvis season in January and the event in Hyde Park will be an Elvis night featuring all of his songs and back catalogue.”

The Elvis concert follows last year’s Radio 2 Abba celebration in Hyde Park, which featured performances from Kylie Minogue, and 2008’s celebration of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music.

It is being produced by Anthony Cherry.

A spokeswoman for Radio 2 said the broadcaster was not currently able to “confirm any details”.

The timing of this Tribute Concert is perfect. The 'Viva Elvis' CD will be released in September and SONY (UK) are expecting a No.1. An Elvis Concert in Hyde Park and a No.1 Album - you can't get better than that.

Just a day after the BBC Last Night Proms in the Park, the Beeb are holding another concert at Hyde Park on Sunday, 13th September to celebrate the band ABBA and their countless hits that have been loved over the decades. Hosted by Chris Evans from BBC Radio 2, this show promises to be an event that should not be missed by any hardcore ABBA fans.

The event, called Thank You For The Music: A Celebration Of The Music Of ABBA, is the biggest tribute concert for ABBA ever attempted in the world. Two members of the original ABBA group, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, will be performing as well as the entire cast of the London West End Mamma Mia musical show. There is also a massive lineup of big stars and musicians who will be performing all the famous ABBA songs:

The cast of Mamma Mia! London: Mamma Mia; Waterloo; Dancing Queen
BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Anders Eljas.

Tickets are still available (as of today, 27th August 9th September), and cost 25 pounds each. As it is a festival in a park, all tickets are general admission, so the advice is to go early if you wish to get close to the front of the stage! The gates open at 5pm, with the concert starting at 6pm and lasting for approximately 2 hours. Don’t forget to check the BBC weather forecast for Sunday before booking

“As the Radio 2 audience knows, I am a huge Elvis fan and it’s an honour to host such a celebration of the enduring appeal of his music.”

BBC Radio 2 today announces that Priscilla Presley is set to appear at Elvis Forever, a concert celebrating the music of Elvis Presley, with Radio 2 Breakfast host Chris Evans, in London's Hyde Park on Sunday 12 September 2010.

The initial wave of confirmed singing stars for the concert, all of whom are fans of Elvis, includes Craig David, Marti Pellow, Tony Hadley, Suzi Quatro, Scouting for Girls, Rick Astley, Imelda May, Nell Bryden and Fran Healy. The full line-up will be announced shortly.

Priscilla Presley says: "I am delighted to be appearing at Elvis Forever which I know will be a memorable celebration of Elvis' life and career.

"He has many fans throughout the UK and we are all looking forward to this celebration at Hyde Park in London. I know Elvis would have been very pleased."

In the year that the King of Rock 'n' Roll would have turned 75, Radio 2 brings together a fantastic and varied line-up to perform Elvis' best loved and most popular songs.

Marti Pellow, lead singer of Wet Wet Wet, is excited to be a part of this celebratory concert: "Elvis, like the city of Memphis, was and is a huge part of my reason for singing... he is a singer's singer and he is known as the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Well, that kinda says it all... if it's cool with Elvis then it's cool with me."

Rock legend Suzi Quatro says: "I first saw Elvis on television when I was six years old, living in Detroit. From that moment on, I decided I would be just like him. It didn't occur to me that he was a guy! He definitely got me All Shook Up and I have loved him ever since. There is not, and never will be, anyone like him in this world again."

Roy Stride, lead singer of Scouting for Girls, adds: "We are so excited to be part of Elvis Presley's 75th birthday celebrations, and feel very privileged to be asked to play Radio 2's Elvis Forever in Hyde Park. Elvis has always had a very special place in our hearts. We love him so much, we dedicated a song to him on our first album called Elvis Ain't Dead. We'll be playing our two favourite Elvis tunes, Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes. We Love Elvis!"

Elvis Forever will be broadcast live on Radio 2, hosted by Chris Evans with a special appearance by Priscilla Presley, and culminating in a spectacular firework finale. Over the following week, listeners will also be able to hear highlights from the concert across the station's daytime shows. The Radio 2 website – bbc.co.uk/radio2 – will feature exclusive backstage footage and interviews from the event.

Radio 2's Elvis Forever concert follows the smash success of last year's event, Thank You For The Music... A Celebration Of The Music Of Abba, which featured Kylie Minogue, Jamie Cullum, Lulu, Chaka Khan, The Feeling, and a host of other stars performing their own take on some of Abba's biggest hits, alongside original members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.

Further highlights of Radio 2's summer of live music will include Paolo Nutini playing live in his hometown of Paisley this month and Scissor Sisters performing live from London for Radio 2 in concert later this year.

Apparently the organisers tried to get some big stars to appear at this Concert, including Cliff Richard, Tom Jones and Coldplay but they had other commitments. Hopefully they will get at least one 'star attraction' to top the bill otherwise The TCB Band with Elvis on the big screen will top it. Perhaps they should anyway. I am surprised that the remaining members of The Beatles are not appearing or some of the early British rockers like Marty Wilde and Joe Brown.

Apparently the BBC has confirmed that Tom Jones will be the star at the 'Forever Elvis' Concert in Hyde Park. From Tom's point of view it is a shrewd move. His latest album is a gospel one and he is just about to release a single from it - 'Run On' - the Elvis track. His audience, being mainy an Elvis one, will favour gospel and it could do him a lot of good chartwise. Of course he was a friend of Elvis' and knew Priscilla well so I suspect he will look forward to appearing. The TCB Band were at the BBC this week-end going through the final details. Could be interesting if they back Jones. He is also appearing at 'The Concert For Heroes' at Twickenham on the same day. Perhaps he will bring Robbie Williams with him.

I only hope that the weather is kind to us!!

Official Press Release From BBC Radio 2.

Date: 06.09.2010
Category: Radio 2

BBC Radio 2 is proud to announce that Sir Tom Jones will be leading the dazzling roster of musicians at Elvis Forever, a concert celebrating the music of Elvis Presley, with Radio 2 Breakfast host Chris Evans and Priscilla Presley, in London's Hyde Park on Sunday 12 September 2010.

The line-up of this unique tribute to the king of rock 'n' roll in the year that he would have turned 75 includes KT Tunstall, Scouting For Girls, Imelda May, Fyfe Dangerfield, Jon Allen, Michael Ball, Mica Paris, Tony Christie, The Magnets, Fran Healy (from Travis), Craig David, Tony Hadley and Marti Pellow.

These musicians will be accompanied by the TCB Band (Takin' Care of Business), the group who provided the rhythm section to Elvis's band from 1969 until 1977.

The evening, which will be broadcast live on Radio 2, will be full of surprise presenters and will culminate in a spectacular firework finale.

"I am delighted that Sir Tom can join us to celebrate the music of Elvis Presley, for a night that promises to be very special," comments Lewis Carnie, Radio 2 and 6 Music Head of Programmes.

So it looks as though the TCB Band will back most, if not all, of the artists appearing and there will be some surprise guest presenters.

The 'Forever Elvis' Concert in Hyde Park is the biggest tribute the UK has ever paid Elvis. I doubt if there will ever be another one. I think that it will be a wonderful concert with a great atmosphere. The trouble with such concerts is that if all the artists attending were 'superstars' then the ticket prices would likely be around £500 minimum and that is way out of the reach of the ordinary Elvis fan. I am sure that Elvis would be honoured with whoever was on the bill - after all Elvis was once a nobody himself.

Not too many names on the list that I would be all that interested in seeing....or know much about.Glad to see Imelda May on there though, saw her in Dublin last year...nice air of the old Rock`n`Roll about her. Fingers crossed that Ol` Sir tom doesn`t get a mad fit of storytelling though..God only knows how big the tales would get with a big audience!!! Hope it all goes well though.
