that's the atmospheric song, ideal for studio singing, where you can control every breath, not so good for live performing, where is so much difucult to do that, with all that noise, probably that's the one of the reasons

Good question.
I don't know that he ever did it justice live but i think it should have remained a part of his act for much longer.

I think the song not really suited his Vegas setlist. Elvis changed his R&B setlist (1969) to a contemporary one (1970) to a standard Vegas setlist (1971-1976).

People often wondered how Elvis would have developed if he started touring right after his comeback in 1969. Most of these people agree that it would have affected his setlist the most (for the better).

Despite the fact that I love most of his songs that he did on stage, I really hate his core setlist: knowing all the songs he recorded, the setlist could have been so much better. For example: it was easy to see/hear that Elvis was bored performing his greatest hits pretty soon after his comeback. So why not change some of them for other million-selling hits? If he rushed through Hound Dog without having any fun with them, why not pick, for example King Creole?

very true Albert, it would have been more stimulating for him to change the song choices more

Perhaps he backed away from the political qualities of the song?

Did he ever do If I Can Dream in concert?

Elvis sang 1 line on 1 August 1971 Las Vegas MS

As for 'In the Ghetto' I guess the last time sung live was in Tulsa 20 June 1972

(Way back in the 1990, Brett Greive from Australia published an article about concert rarities in Elvis Extra. The above info was stated there)
