Can anyone tell me if the Gates to Graceland are the original gates that Elvis had installed?

I didn't think they were the original gates...I'm not sure, but I thought I read it somewhere that they were replaced...

I thought they were original..they have been taken away in the past for repairs though - so I guess they could have been replaced.....

A friend of mine went there for the first time - and the gates were not there....oh wow - that would have killed me!

I can just imagine, jeanelvisgirl. I have never been to Graceland, but to me the Gates are just such a big part of seeing Graceland...

I think they are the original gates but had to be repaired three times? Someone on one of these threads posted that here last year or early this year.

Thanks Jen, I remember that thread well now. The figures on the two pictures aren't identical so either the repairs changed it slightly or the gate itself was replaced. We still don't know for sure do we?

I'd hate to think they're replacements.
I like to know when I'm looking at the real thing.

I asked the Archive people at Graceland...here is their reply....

Yes the gates are original. They have been down for repairs, but are the same ones purchased by Elvis in 1957. They have been different colors throughout the years including red. But the Green color they are now is what they were the majority of time when Elvis was at Graceland.

Hope this information is helpful,

Hope that is true and not just a trick to make people believe those are the original gates.

Well, for the most part the Gates are original. Even if they repaired them in the 51 years since they were installed! They can always weld the pieces that were hit by cars, hung on by fans ect. They are the most famous gates in history. I felt a chill when i first went through them!:cold:

The second most famous gates are Stephen King's with his bats. I truly wish he and Elvis could have met and I would liked to have witnessed that meeting.

I believe that there are pics out there from 1957-1960 where the gates are, in fact, red in color.

I get the Discovering Elvis trivia from Joe Esposito and here is a question from a few days ago...

Q: Who manufactured the musical Gates that are still present at Graceland today?

A: The Veterans Ornamental Iron Works of Phoenix, Arizona.

I hope this means they are the original. I don't know why but I would be sad if I found out they weren't. Going through those gates while listening to "Welcome to My World" is such an amazing experience!
