For nearly thirty years Elvis fans have been trying to get two honors
for the King which they have not been successful. One is making Elvis'
birthday a national holiday. The other is to rename the Memphis
airport the Elvis Presley International Airport. This week Memphis
Democrat congressman Steve Cohen has spit in the face of Elvis and
Elvis fans through out the world by proposing that the name of the
airport be changed to the Isaac Hays International Airport:angry:. Cohen
plans to introduce legislation in the house to have the name changed.
With the current political make up of the house and senate. It is
likely that acting purely upon political correctness that the name
change could be approved. In an election year no one is going to risk
being called a racist by voting against changing the name to honor an
african american. If anyone is going to be honored by having the name
of the airport changed that right belongs to Elvis. Contact your local
congressman and senator and demand that if the name is changed that it
is changed to the Elvis Presley International Airport.

A poorly written piece, that trys to evoke racisit tension around Elvis.

Lets see..

The article is slightly racist and draws attention to the Democratic party in a negative way.

The author/poster would not perhaps happen to be a white southern republican male by any chance....who has obvious hangups.

In my opinion that's going to far naming Elvis birthday a federal holiday.
I don't think what Elvis did is really comparable to what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did so I don't think his birthday should be a holiday like Dr. King's is.
I wouldn't mind the Memphis airport being renamed after Elvis though.

I doubt either will happen.

Mr Stryx, Master of the Tautology!

The airport's name should stay as it is: although Elvis was certainly Memphis' most famous citizen, there are too many musical greats from there for the airport to honour one above the other.

Even Elvis.

As much as I love Elvis, he's not the only celebrity that lives there. His image and works surround the city and Memphis is known , in part, because of his legacy. Why not name the airport after Isaac Hayes? I know we are biased, but what about the other famous people who've contributed to the Memphis sound?!

SleepyJack

maybe they should compromise and call it "Elvis Presley" airport"...but only on his birthday every year......Doesn`t really bother me, doubt that it would have bothered Elvis either way.....big fuss about nothing....name it after Priscilla for all I care!

Your comment could be construde as a racial slur against white southern males.
I didn`t view this as a racial piece. Democrats are what they are and they don`t need any help drawing negative attention to themselves. I hope it`s not named after Isacc Hayes. If it`s not named after Elvis, it should stay as it is.

I can't believe what I've read.As for making Elvis' birthday a national holiday, why not? Better yet make it a world-wide holiday. As for the airport re-naming.I think Elvis did a heck of a lot more then Issac Hays ever did.Elvis gave to a lot of charities in his life-time.I say name the airport after Elvis!!!!

Elvis did more for Memphis than Isaac Hays.

That isn't the point here Frank.

Its the small fact Elvis wasn't the only one who did something for music from Memphis such as Isaac Hays and they should be honored aswell. Of course majority here will say it should be Elvis, heck its an Elvis Presley messageboard.

Believe it or not the entire Memphis population are not Elvis fans.Actually there is some backlash against him there. Not everyone is content to have their city defined by Elvis.Basically it's their airport and city so they should do whatever they want.

And while we're at it, why don't we change the name of Memphis into "Elvistown", or heck,
better yet: Tennessee to "Elvisania" Like some others have said here: Elvis wasn't
the only good/important thing (musically or otherwise) to come from Memphis or Tennessee.

Elvis & Politics don't mix...

The guy who insinuated a political motivation by stoking the fire with this
"Memphis Democrat spits in face of Elvis Options" was trying to make it
political, which is why I responded the way I did.

Whatever name they choose is not going to change our unconditional love for Elvis.

I think there's a racial issue in the USA, but who cares?

And err.. If anyone would say something negative (concerning Elvis) then I'll smash his backside about it!

*watches as it gets intense*:blush::blush:

Not really, they are really equal in their owns ways but the biggest difference is the Elvis is a solo artist while Beatles is a group. Two different fields. Elvis is the biggest solo artist while the Beatles is the biggest group.
