He just had it, what ever it is. He crossed generations, several now, Nationalities, and race had a way of making every one feel like he was theirs.
He could take a song, like My Way for example and interpret it in a way that
you would forget someone else wrote it. He'd make it feel like it was his and he was letting you in on it , then for me anyway, he at the same time also made it connect so that I felt like it related to me too. He did that again and again with songs. He wasn't overly political so no matter where you land on the spectrum there, you seen some of Elvis so you'd think "He's just like me" and weren't alienated by it the way many others have done. He made time for the fans, and for people that needed it. He was a full package entertainer who came across like Family. Everything he had in him He used it up for us.

He made you feel like you were part of his inner circle when he sang, (especially if you were lucky to see him when he was alive), but I think it goes further than that. I think the reasons why the world remembers Elvis is because he fulfilled what most of us long and search for....he's the embodiement of the American Dream. And, he could make you believe, (if only for a short time), that the world was as it should be...with no hate or prejudice, that we could all be one. Lennon's "Imagine" is like that. But whether you liked rock n' roll or not, most people I've known at least have one song by Elvis that they love. It's because he could sing it all.....rock, r&b, country, gospel, melancholy ballads, or whatever....he possessed a unique talent to take a song, and not only make his own, but yours as well. That's why the world remembers Elvis.

Also a good point, the whole Rags to riches Dream thing you mention. Then after he made it He gave tons of it away so that other folks could feel a sample of what it was like
to have something too. That just doesn't happen much without a rolling camera crew. The Song stuff rings true as well because I've known people that say "I hate Elvis but he really did a good job on America the beautiful" so that also rings true.

his music is still fresh and relevent,
He had it all, the look, the sound, and when you watch elvis you can opnly be in awe.

Also the fact he came from nothing to become the biggest name in the world,
