View Full Version : Graceland on Oprah 10/10/06
I personally can't stomach to watch her "show" so I'll take a pass, but I thought maybe some of you would be interested.

Thank you for the reminder.... I sure do want to watch it.... they have showed clips of Opra going into a room that nobody has has been permitted to enter since Elvis' death. :hmm: :hmm:
(At least that is what they were showing on TV last week ... they unlock a door but show nothing else until Tuesday's show .)
Thanks JDD I had forgot about it .. Dovey

Though I'm not a fan of Oprah, I will watch it for obvious reasons.

Well I just finished watching Oprah at Graceland. I thought it was all very well done. Sort of dismisses the idea that the upstairs is closed off because it's used as a storage place when they have that sealed secret room somewhere on the property to house his personal effects and memorabilia.
I was glad to see that Lisa was the hostess and found she was very gracious to Oprah and her friend Gayle. It was extra nice of her to have all of Elvis' favorite foods prepared for them. I did feel that Lisa's husband Michael could have take off his hat at the dining table though:D - so much for my old fashion values.......I'm anxious to read other comments.

Did they go upstairs or mention anything about it?
Anything said we didn't already know?
Thanx.

No, they did not mention going upstairs. Oprah did admit to being a distant cousin of the Presley's. All in all it was respectfully done. The secret room, (which they turned the cameras off to get there, which they turned them back on once inside), has the 60,000 artifacts that were recently discovered, you cannot believe the stuff in there. Personal checks written by Elvis, (it's funny, they showed one made out to Sonny West) the red vest he wore in 68, his sunglasses from 1972, old movie posters and god only knows what else. That part was fascinating.

The guide that was with Lisa Maria said that the place was decorated like it was in 1957, I don't believe that.:hmm: In another special before I have seen that secret room that talked about. It's just a place where they store all of Elivs' clothing, personel things and paperwork, etc.

 I really enjoyed the program and was delighted to see Lisa there to represent her father. Oprah asked her if she remembered her father and the things they did and she said yes and that she loved everthing they ever did together and also that she really loved him very much. (Lisa did a great job with the whole thing)
They said the secret room was fire , tornado, earthquake and flood proof. They turned off the camers so nobody could see where the exact location ,
Everything of Elvis' was put away in pull-out drawers. It was truly an Awesome sight to see all that rare stuff, like his sunglasses, jewerly, pictures, checks he has written out to people, and even his favorite cloths.... seeing the red vest he wore in 1968 was really cool. They all put on white gloves before they toughed anything in the room.
The meal they ate in the dining room looked so yummy. The strawberry cake make my mouth water lol. They had all of Elvis's favorite foods cooked for Oprah and a sit down meal. It was great to watch and listen. Lisa told stories about Elvis and her one aunt. LOL
I taped it and had to replay the tape 3 times to make sure I heard Oprah right when she said her grandmother was a Presley. LOL
They did not go upstairs but they did say and this is Elvis' bed and show it... (pic of it of what... I do not know) They showed Glady's bedroom and told of Elvis's aunt died there in that room in later years after Glady's was gone.
I would say Oprah got the royal treatment at Graceland.... and all in all I loved watching the program.

The bed they showed that was once Elvis' bed was the round bed with furry white stuff on it. It is on display there in another section, I guess another building there that shows some of Elvis' other furniture he used at one time or another. It was not the big bed that we ususally see with him laying there with Lisa when she was a baby.

Thanks Tommy, you are right about the bed but I just don't remember seeing it when I was at Graceland... (y) (y) I guess I missed out on that one.. there is just so much to see it is hard to take it all in (or just forgot abut it LOL):hmm:

Diane,
You are right about Michael and the hat at the dinner table I was kind of surprised that he did not take it off too.
The really great part for me was that Lisa was the hostess and not her mother.... and Lisa did not swear... well maybe once :lmfao: :lmfao:

I really enjoyed watching this, the best part is when the other lady was showing clothing, sunglasses, and etc. You saw Lisa tear up, because I'm sure it brought back a lot of great memories of her and her dad. You can really see the love she had for her Dad. Not many famous daughter and sons had as much love for their father like Lisa did with Elvis.

i found this interesting, for the fact that OPRAH has for years dissed E.P. saying how he hated blacks , and ripped them off etc.. Now she is seen and heard telling LISA that she loved E.P. and was a big fan, hmmmm looks like OPRAH WINFREY IS UM ... 2 FACED, I COULD THINK of alot more deserving people to have the privilage of sitting down at ELVIS dinner table like a bunch of FANS who are the sole reason the ELVIS PRESLEY world exists, that spend almost every dime they have on books,cd's etc.. and make the pilgrimage down to memphis and the tour through GRACELAND[ YEAH i guess OPRAH DESERVES IT more than anyone else] LISA seems like a genuine person[just like DADDY] but i still think the fans desrve more than a talk show host., just my opinion though.

Memphis, I agree on somethings. But if she totally opened house and took down the ropes. There are some fans that are griddy and would take some of his things.
Now, part that really got me more I thought out it. She said they where related some how? I didn't hear how?
Also what I think is funny how they said how the house looked in 1958? I liked the house more when Linda changed the color Blue to Red. It made the house stand out more. I think why they don't open the upstairs...doesn't Lisa stay up there when ever they close it down for few weeks? I can't remember.
Love to all,

Thanks for posting the link Meg. Curiousity was getting the better of me !! It was interesting to watch tho :D
It seemed to be done with respect. It was pretty obvious Lisa still is effected when she sees her Dad's stuff. And Graceland came across as still quite homely, for that visit anyway.
Although tut tut Oprah !! you shouldn't be touchin stuff without the gloves on !! ......
Does anyone know the true connection on the Winfrey/Presley family tree? :hmm:

Personally I like Oprah well enough but I don't watch her show unless she has someone on I want to see. You are right, she shouldn't have been touching anything without gloves on - shouldn't have touched anything period unless it was handed to her.
I found that Lisa looked and acted very classy and intelligent and I felt proud of her. Oprah did not look her best at all. As to how she is related to the Presley's she mentioned that her grandmother had been a Presley.

I could very well be 100 % wrong, but I don't believe her, and I don't believe she believes it either. Like I said though Maybe I'm wrong.

Yes Diane I caught Oprah saying that her Grandmother was a Presley (on Megs link) but I was just wondering where that particular Presley was in Elvis's family tree ? Anyone got any ideas ?

I have the genealogy links for Elvis and Oprah. I can't figure it out. Oprah said they were about 18th cousins. What did Lisa say about people on her father's side? She made a comment about that. Here's the links on Ancestry.com and Geneology.com. Hope someone else can figure it out.
This is a really neat site complete with pictures and music. Cannot verify all facts though.

This site does not tell a lot on Oprah's genealogy except that Hattie Mae Presley is her GM, nor does the site on Ancestry.com

I have Smith in my family background and they're from the same part of the country as Elvis but it doesn't make me related.

I'm thinking that Presley is a slightly less common name than Smith though ;)

Not after Elvis became famous , then they came out of the woodwork. Every other month some new Cousin is writing a book or making a CD or touring as a impersonator.

Im located in the southern US and while not as common as Smith you might be surprised at how common the name Presley is.It was around long before Elvis. Its just not that common in the northern states.I dont believe the name Elvis was that rare in the south either.

i meant that some fans would be awarded the pleasure of dining at graceland,it would also be a hell of a way to raise cash for charities, GOD knows that E.P. HAD SHOWN 2 FANS AROUND GRACELAND IN 75[EILEEN,KRUG, AND CHRISTOPHER NARDI] and who knows how he'd feel about OPRAH sittin down at the table.

I don't think Elvis would have minded Oprah sitting down at his dining table. Remember, he was generous to a fault.
I got to thinking about this geneology connection Oprah claims to have with the Presley family. I read somewhere that Elvis was distantly related to the famouns King family in Texas. Well, so is my husband's family so that does make them related?? My husband sure resembles the Presley family a hell of a lot more than Oprah does.:D

Was great to see graceland and they did a god job, Lisa was really nice and she looks so down to the earth and also she is like her daddy in many ways , she always said miss oprah and I remember read that elvis also did that , i can't imagine how much she miss her dad you can see in her face.
Here's the background on Oprah's family ties to EP.
In 1997, I was working for a newspaper and magazine company here in Madison, AL, outside of Huntsville called Anderson News. While I was on break, I was able to read any of those magazine we stocks and placed on pallets to be shipped to stores across America. One day I saw what looked to be a tabloid but it was an EP devoted magazine. On the front page was a picture of EP in 1969 and next to him was a shot of Oprah then in 1997. It said "Elvis and Oprah-Related?".
In the story, I remember this clearly. It told how this was possible. EP's great-great grandfather James Presley had an affair and fathered a baby with a slave which was Oprah's great-great grandmother. That child was born into slavery and then when slavery ended Presley and the former slave married and raised their child together. Also, Oprah's mom was born in Tupelo on January 8, 1935, same day as EP was. Oprah grew up in McComb, MS not far from Tupelo and later moved to Nashville while EP was in Memphis. Oprah and EP never knew they were related and Oprah did not find out until about 1997 when the story broke. Oprah grew up a big fan of EP and as she even told Lisa, thought she would get to meet him someday. Back in the early 90's, Oprah did a tribute show to EP that featured impersonators and one of them serenaded her to Can't Help Falling In Love. Oprah talked about having a velvet painting of EP in her living room over her fireplace. And according to multiple reports-Oprah mentioned during a past episode in Las Vegas a few years back that her cousin was Elvis and that all black people should be proud of him. I guess they must have missed her message there on that day. Also keep in mind that Lisa and Priscilla had never gone on any talk show in the past together and discussed their private lives as mother and daughter and about EP until they went on the Oprah show last year. Lisa and Oprah have also done charity work together and for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
So the Oprah connection to EP isn't really new news but to some it is. Me-I knew this long before others did. I even mentioned it on other forums as far back as March of this year when discussing EP's ties to blacks.

Now it all makes total sense why Oprah literally called Lisa Presley "cousin" at one point during the 2006 "Oprah at Graceland" show.:supriced:

I really enjoyed watching this
I already had seen it on television, but it makes me feel good to see it again...
oh boy,i really want to see that secret room with all his personal belonginess
I have had to watch Opray at times because I am home and my wife watches her, I must admit I have never heard her talk bad about Elvis on any of the shows where he has come up. She said she was a fan and felt a connection to him because she had grown up so poor and so had he.

Yeah, Oprah's outburst over that incident when she wasn't allowed into that department store because they had another function on, was laughable. That kind of behaviour is way out of fashion. Dummy. She doesn't know how lucky she is, to have the privileges most of us only dream about, and then to carry on like a pork chop because she can't have her own way was pretty bad in my opinion.
