View Full Version : An Interesting Book Worth reading
Inside Graceland:Elvis Maid Remembers
Forgive me if this is an old topic. While reading the posts about Schilling's book it it made me think about this book again.I would just like to recommend it to everyone. Its not a lengthy book nor does it contain anything earth shattering. What it does is really give you an idea of everyday life in Graceland back then.No stories about the road or any of the stuff you have read countless times. It has some good stories about Vernon and Minnie Mae also.Once I started it I couldnt put it down.I thought it was refreshing because it contained stories of just the normal stuff in the house and what it was like to work there.Elvis really did care for the people he had working fore him.I got a chance to spend a couple of hours with the author one night. He said the maids really did love him like family. This comes through in the book so if you want a good positive book about Elvis with some interesting info go to amazon and get a copy.

I second that , not so much for the Elvis info, but more for the life around Graceland, when Elvis was gone, vernon info , and info on the other folks that Elvis let live in his house. Its a short read, about two hours tops but it started to fill in some non Elvis blanks for me that I was interested in.

This is a book I've been trying to find for some time. I'm glad the two of you found it interesting. I will have to re-double my efforts.

I met this lady, Nancy Rooks, at the EIC this year. Very nice lady. She seems sincere. She was out of the books and down to signing photos. I'll have to get it.

Read it 2 times and liked it :) , it?s Elvis from another angle and even though it?s not very informative it has nice home stories. The only thing I didn?t like that much is that half of the book is centered in Elvis death and funeral but even though she tells it with respect I think some details about the sight of Elvis dead in the bathroom weren?t necessary. What I liked too is the part after Elvis death about how the house was without him and what happened with his family because almost all the books end with Elvis death but this one tells about his aunt, grandmother, daughter and father a little and how they continued with their lives without him.

Put it down read something else, and come back to it in a week or two. A couple of times lately I've started books and lost interest, took a break and got back to it later and that usually helps.

Hi Moody, the name of the book we have ordered from Amazon is: Inside Graceland- Elvis Maid Remembers.
The booK I have been reading is The Colonel by Alanna Nash... I guess it kind of makes me mad to think he might of killed a lady and got away with it.... and the many cons he pulled on people to get Money... Yes, I will finish the book one of these days. :D

I received this book in the mail yesterday and as it was a small one I read it from cover to cover. I liked it but I wish Elvis and his entourage had been mentioned more often.
I was happy to read that Vernon had given Charlie the option to stay at Graceland after Elvis died but Charlie chose to find his own way and I thought a lot of him for it. He was a good guy.
I don't understand why Vernon didn't want Billy Smith to stay there and why he wouldn't let him have the mobile home. Generally I like Billy and I know that most of you think he was super loyal to Elvis but something about him has always nagged at me. I still think Charlie was the truest friend of all.
I was surprised to read that Vernon thought that someone had killed Elvis and believed that until he died. Anyone have any comments on this?
All in all it was an enjoyable book but it lacked a lot for me.

I agree MissClawdy,
I read a couple more chapters the other day... it just makes me sick the way he used people... I put the book back on the table... I will finish it someday.   LOL
He was just a con from the carnival...and never chaged or cared about anything but $$$$$$. Glad to hear you feel the same way . Thanks, Dovey ;)

Diane,
I got my book , Inside Graceland over the weekend and read it.... I thought it was a really nice book to read... She was very loyal to Elvis and his whole family...
I liked the way she tip-toed around the x-wife situation lol..
Enjoyed hearing that Vernon ordered Ginger out of the house after Elvis died... They are all crying.... and she comes down the stairs all dressed up, hair and make-up done beautifully. Wow.... I guess I must remember that she was just a kid... but... Elvis did follow her and knew she was seeing other men. He spent 60,000 dollars on her WOW, It was interesting that a branch fell off of a tree in front of her car on the day of the funeral... (Maybe Glady's was really mad!!)
I am sure we will never know the truth about all the mystery that surrounded Elvis' death. Many books I have read leave me wondering in many different directions :hmm: :hmm:
All in all, the book was nice to read and I enjoyed it. She was very respectful toward the Presley's and you could tell that she loved them very much. Dovey :D

Wow Dovey, you were struck by all the same passages in the book that I was.
Nancy did seem like she thought a lot of the family. That tip-toeing was kinda cute wasn't it? I wonder how long it took her to get that tea "just right"????:D
The tree branch coming down at just that time was almost ominous wasn't it? I never thought of Gladys though - that's a good one.:D I saw it as a warning not to come back.:D
