You can't talk about Elvis without the conversation of clothing coming up, to that end I would like to start a topic about Elvis' clothes, it can be any era from the 50's right to the flamboyant 70's.............
Include photo's as well (y)
As my log-in name suggests I am a big fan of the 70's style especially the Jumpsuits, I also like the streetware which is very similar in design e.g. the collars and the flares.
I'll comment some more once the topic gets going.........................

I think he looked great on his white and black two pieces suits from 69. They were simpl and elegant. But most of all I always have liked his boots
I liked Elvis' wardrobes from the late 50s , late 60s and 70-72. The Jumpuits from 69- 72 are my faves:D

Sorry Matt I have no idea of how to scan a photo over to this site but I would like to say that the outfit he wore to see President Nixon is one of my favorites but the one in my avatar and the brown suit similar to it top them all for me.

Love this topic :D...
I think Elvis had to be one of the best-dressed men ever... his style was just so unique and ELVIS... I love his look in the 50s, very daring, and especially around 68-72, particuarly 1969-70.
Well I love LOADS of the clothes Elvis wore, so I'm going to embarrass myself and show that I have no restraint cos I love so many that I feel bad about leaving some out!
My absolute favourite has to be...
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/amzietamzie/singingstraightonttwii.jpg
Other favourites I have attached... and in addition to those, I have to say I also love the stripy t-shirt he wore with Priscilla on that holiday in 68, loads of the shirts he wore (especially black ones, and I love the yellow one Jumpsuit Junkie attached :notworthy), every other version of the 69 press conference 2-piece suit and so many more! Movie-wise... ummmm his red uniform in Frankie and Johnny , his wooly jumper in Jailhouse Rock, the shirts he wore in Girls, Girls, Girls and more! I prefer the plainer jumpsuits, especially the Concha and others. I could go on and on but I think I've done that too much already

69 is a great year, Elvis could have worn a bin bag and looked cool.
1970 with President Nixon, the top under the jacket is from vegas in 1969 and a picture is attached.

69 - 73 stage and streetware. One of my streetware favourites is the MSG-pressconference suit. Favourite jumsuits are the 69 black 2-piece, Aloha, Owl
He looked best in the '68 Comeback clad completely in leather.
That said, I voted for the combination of '60s and '70s cuz I see alot of great '70s styles pictured here, and I also like the jumpsuits. He was dressed great in alot of his movies too.
I also like the pink & black of the '50s. (y)

Thanks for the pics and info Matt. I never knew that underneath that jacket, was the top from 69 live appearances. Just to add a bit here, the jacket that he wore to visit Nixon, he wore during the 68 comeback special, during the nightclub scene.

I tell you what, he was the sharpest dresser in his most unique way. There's one pic that I love from the fifties, he's in Memphis, 1956, he's wearing a pink shirt, black pants, pink socks and black shoes, and is standing behind a policeman, picking his pocket, also, another shot of him by himself, incredible. These two pics were shot in color which makes them stunning. Since I don't know how to post pics, can somebody else post them if possible? Only EP could have worn that outfit, and still look cool fifty years later.

Leroy, I go into four different EP forums everyday, therefore I might miss info or forget that you or somebody else has graciously posted this info already, or in a different thread, if so, I apologize. Leroy as far as your contributions go, they speak for themselves. Everybody is fully aware that "you know your stuff" and don't mind sharing your knowledge with us.

I thought I had a pretty good eye for detail and was so proud of myself that I could identify every jumpsuit and almost every year they were worn but Leroy you go way beyond that with the mikes, jewelry etc. I'm surprised that you can't tell the year from the tilt of Elvis' head.:D You are great and your renditions are fantastic.
My thanks to both you and Matt for the best Elvis jumpsuit site there is out there.

Boy my timing has been way off lately! Here I was trying to make you feel better and appreciated and you get this post from a sick individual who's probably a failed artist and is jealous of your work. Don't let that person get you down. Sticks and stones you know........
IMO There's Too much of the I hate (fill in the blank) stuff in here lately. Its turning into the I hate forum instead of the TCB world Elvis forum its all about how many people Elvis had in his life people now hate forum . Bummer because this place has a lot of people with good info and resources to offer each other besides hate.

Elvis was always the coolest guy when it comes about fashion, since his early days in Memphis when people thinked of him as a weird guy or to much on the black side of the town, stuff that latter became the fashion among teenagers till the early 60?s, british 60's rockers where not only influenced by Elvis music, but they were influences by his looks, the kind of clothes he wear. THen in the 70's he impossed fashion among rockers, one about extreme stage clothes, his attire looked totally unsusual in 1969 and in 1970 when he showed us his first Jumpsuits, by the mid 70's even Mick Jagger copied, "note by note" the style of Elvis early 70's jumpsuits (during The Stones '74 Tous Mick used an hybrid between: "the King of Spades" one and The "I Got Lucky one). In 71' he started using capes, years later, many artist where into that. What about the glasses, the heavy belts, somehow Elvis aways managed to take te various elements of the current fashions, combined them in peculiar way so he looked utlra cool, but yet, not following the fads as everybody, but imposing one. Here are some pics:

Funny ... I started a similar poll some time ago in another forum (y)
I am equally intrigued by Elvis style in all decades ... each has its specific characteristics and appeal ... I have a general tendency towards the 60ies though ...
As fas as Elvis is concerned I distinguish between ...
1. the 50ies - Rocker -Style

I loved Elvis clothing from the 70s best. It had style, flamboyance, panache', character and more.My favorites were the red shirt he wore in TTWII, and the outfit he wore while singing "Always On My Mind", I think it was in Elvis On Tour. The early jumpsuits were fine, but I really love the later ones, like the Aloha From Hawaii and Mexican Sundial. I just wish I owned a pair of Elvis style glasses.

does anyone know if Elvis had any input in what design a new one would have ....or did he leave it entirely to the guy that made the suits ??

Elvis knew what he liked though, so a lot of the input did come from him.

All the Jumpsuit Designs came from Bill Belew up until 1971 and the Gene Doucette from then on! The only input from Priscilla would be minimal as Elvis and Cilla virtually lived separate lives from 1970 on wards.
If Priscilla has said anything to the contrary then it is pure fabrication, Bill Belew would send sketches for Elvis' approval and little or no changes were made from the original sketches!
Any input given was by Elvis and Elvis alone; if any!
Vulcandude: You say you have known Priscilla for a long time? can you please elaborate and tell us when you have met her etc.
Thanks, guys ......that's as clear as mud .;) :)
Somewhere I heard/read that Elvis sent different "messages" with the designs on his suits. I'd heard that before.....but, never really asked anyone that knew that much about the jumpsuits.
IF you all come to a conclusion....just holler .:) TYVM...

To simply say that you know Priscilla is a "Big Deal" if you do know her and you speak to her on a regular basis I am sure that you will be able to give details to back up what you are saying! I am sure that you be aware that people have in the past made similar claims and haven't been able to back up what they say?
If you are on speaking terms and she divulges this kind of information it is something we would All like to hear.
I am not having a go or singling you out, I am simply curious to know more of this relationship and any further insights, photo's or proof of such meetings or phone calls that you have had.
To simply say "Nuff said" isn't very insightful.

Is it because this is an older post that the "attached thumbnails" won't show? I've clicked on them & nothing. Anyway, it seems that with Elvis - the flashier the better. There would be nothing "simply elegant" in his closet. It would always have his touch - flash. Personally, I love the elegant tuxedo he wore on the Frank Sinatra show - wow! I also love the brown suit he wore - especially when he wore it sans blouse - that just screams pure sex. ret69copy

To simply say "Nuff said" isn't very insightful.Matt, first of all, I don't llike the insinuation or the feeling that I'm being called a liar. Secondly, I don't have to prove to you or anyone else about my friendship with Priscilla, because I don't lie. My word should be good enough. Thirdly, because Priscilla and Lisa Marie are public figures in the Elvis world, I don't feel comfortable in divulging the specifics you mention above, i.e. the phone calls, letters, or whatever, especially when I long ago promised I would keep those details to myself. They never minded my sharing what info I learned, but other than that, you are going to have to let go of the specifics. I respect what privacy they have, and because of that I've been lucky enough to have known them this long. So before I get really angry and say something I'll either regret or that'll get me banned, once again I will say to you.....'Nuff said.

if you are 37 years of age (as in you profile) in 1985 you would have been 14 or 15 years of age?
So what you are saying is that Priscilla would talk to you about Elvis on a personal level? :hmm:
I am not calling you a liar, I simply find it incredulous that a woman of Priscilla's position communicates with someone from this board who in other threads asks questions I would have thought of as common knowledge.

you know, i havent been following this from the start, and i admit that i dont know alot about EP, but i do know this much... this is a place for discussing EP and other such topics, in this case, his clothes, and i know from previous forum experiences, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and this is exactly what is being said / done here. Someone spoke their opinion, and added an additional comment to it, and when asked to back it up, became defensive about it. It is my humble opinion that if a member doesnt wish to divulge information, he should be respected for that, not shunned, as for some of the other things said, we should all be friends here, not enemies, and this place will grow through friendship, not bitterness
i have now said my piece, and i am not trying to flame anyone here, so if i offended any one, i am sorry ahead of time

All comments are welcome here, however, if you makes comments that are then said to come from someone as close as Priscilla you should expect to be able to give details. I am sorry but just to say my word is good enough doesn't hold much credibility when we are on a forum and I can't see your face?
I'm pretty sure that if you did know Priscilla and LMP you would have a photograph or some sort of proof, this does not mean you are divulging information or breaking trust, just adding credibility. If I offend you by asking for proof I am sorry but "That's The Way It Is"

I agree with you to a certain extent......{ I love for people to back up their claims} That's a big ,big thing for me too. Most of what I think I know has just been taken second or third hand. I've found out much later; some of that has proven to be false.
In which case; I have to agree with doombringer too. :hmm:
This is only a forum ; bringing people with all kinds of info that they've heard or seen. " It is not a court of law" So, I guess I'm saying these things were created to have fun, enjoyment.
Take whatever's said with a "grain of salt." Believe what you will, but don't bet your life on anything you read....;)
None of it's important enough to constantly fight over.....IMO.

In the Elvis-world there are always two stories; myths and facts. Matt is trying to separate facts from myths, just like I always try to do. It has nothing to do with having an opinion. It just that we are getting sick and tired of all those myths that are being kept alive and taken for granted. Myths that are being spread by people who claim to be of any importance but will not answer the door if you ring the bell.
We're here on this forum, not only to share pictures but also to share information. We like to get to know Elvis a little bit better than we already do. But what is the info worth if you can't rely on the fact that the info is true?
Having an opinion is a good thing. But if you're not able or willing to back it up it's just as hollow as a drum.

Leroy.
you always make sense .;) And, I'd love to be able to say I know something for a fact. IF I've talked to the "insider" in question.....I can always say; well, this is what he/she said at the time. Sometimes; in waiting a bit & he/she tells a different "truth" to someone else. :'(
With things we can see with our own eyes or hear with our own ears; I'm more inclined to agree & take it as "fact." Such as the jumpsuits & the music.....all else; seems to be subject to change. ;)
All comments are welcome here, however, if you makes comments that are then said to come from someone as close as Priscilla you should expect to be able to give details. I am sorry but just to say my word is good enough doesn't hold much credibility when we are on a forum and I can't see your face?
This is something I had to learn....the hard way. I do agree with this statement I always try to "back up my statements" & others I quote from. As Leroy has said.....unfortunately, in Elvis World; there is always fact ,myth & what "someone" says without proof to "make oneself appear 'in the know."
There is also I've found ...."real people " that knew Elvis that will NOT discuss anything on a forum. And, IF you want to remain their friend.....you'd better keep your mouth shut !!
In the long run; I guess if one has "inside info", it's best NOT to post it on a public forum. IMO; it's what a real friend might do......;)
These people I just call up & chat for awhile .....assuring them I won't spread it around ...and I keep my promise .

For the last week since this issue came to light again, I became very angry and upset because Jumpsuit Junkie couldn't just take my word as a die hard Elvis fan, and believe what I said was true, especially when others did believe what I said. I have no reason to lie, nor do I lie, and I especially would not lie about the things I stated regarding Priscilla, Elvis, and the jumpsuits. I agonized as to whether I should post again, and even got so angry at Jumpsuit Junkie, that I took my anger out on a friend. I also came very close several times to just deciding to tell him off. But, trying to be the better person, I apologized to my friend, and decided against telling Jumpsuit Junkie off. Instead, as before, I will say this....I know Priscilla and Lisa Marie, I believe what they tell me, I trust them as friends do. I also will say that if you want to believe what I tell you that's fine, if not, that's fine too, and Jumpsuit Junkie "That's The Way It Is".
I can understand your frustration,vulcandude .
It is as you say .....believe IF you want OR don't believe if you don't want . It's not like it's a life or death thing....Shoot, we're not even writing a book. ;) If so, we can leave that part out.
I do understand what JJ means too . I had to break myself from insisting on "proof posiitive" on everything. I had to stop that or else waste my time being involved in a no win arguememt all the time.

Hi Leroy, it is because of the information you have shared with me that I have leaned so much from you! I trust you implicitly and I am confident the information provided comes from a trustworthy source, if ever I have questioned something that I am unsure of, you with provide the source of your information and will go back and ratify to ensure that your information is kosher. I thank you for your patience and the fact that you never get angry should I question information.
Goes back to, (talking about all opinions given on boards, people can only go on what they read, most of the time, unfortunately) only the people involved know, or if someone was there, as a first hand opinion (which is still not 100% reliable, unless objective).
Jess
Jess, when people make bold statements and quote people in the third person, are we to simply believe what they say as true, when other highly respected individuals have commented to the contrary?
When you throw Priscilla's name into the equation it insinuates that the comment is true, makes the argument look solid to those less informed.
This is something I had to learn....the hard way. I do agree with this statement I always try to "back up my statements" & others I quote from. As Leroy has said.....unfortunately, in Elvis World; there is always fact ,myth & what "someone" says without proof to "make oneself appear 'in the know."

ajr, although I do not know you personally I have a lot of respect for your comments and the way you handle yourself. I may not always agree with what you say, but when you make a statement I find it credible. We have had our differences, the world simply would not be fun if we were all the same ;)

I have never, ever questioned you as a fan! I truly believe you are a fan.
I do however have difficulty in believing your relationship with Priscilla and LMP. Why would I believe you, have we earned each others respect in any way? We are both many miles apart typing messages on a Elvis message board......... If you are a friend of the Presley's why would you be angry if I don't believe you..... You have not said one thing to make me believe that you do, of course it is your prerogative if you do not want to share any information that would give you any credibility.
You cannot post in threads claiming this is what Priscilla has told me then claim the 5th when this is challenged.
Quite simply "Put Up or Shut Up" or do not use Priscilla as a safety net!
I am quite happy to eat humble pie and publicly apologise if sufficient evidence is put forward.

I too dislike it very much if someone just gives a hint that they know something but won't tell you what it is....unfair and frustrating to say the least. If something is supposed to be kept secret as like in a "source", then don't say anything in the first place. To me, that's a power play.

I will leave this issue alone unless required to respond!
So....Priscilla was confiding her personal thoughts at the time to a 14 year old?:lol:
I guess he should have gone ahead and said...it appears the end result was the same!:supriced::lol::lol::lol:

August 14, 2007 Edition > Section: Style > The King of Fashion BY GABRIELLE BIRKNER August 14, 2007 URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/60490
Elvis Presley, who died 30 years ago this week, didn't have one signature look — he had many. There was the gold lamé blazer he wore while on tour in 1957, the all-leather suit he donned for his 1968 "Comeback Special," and, of course, the jewel-encrusted, wide-collar jumpsuits he sported onstage in Las Vegas and Hawaii in later years.
As a fledgling performer, the man who would become "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" favored colorful, flashy attire, and completed his look with plentiful gold jewelry.
Though he was pictured in jeans in the 1957 films "Loving You" and "Jailhouse Rock," he eschewed denim when the cameras weren't rolling. "They reminded him of the poverty of his youth," the author of "Elvis Fashion: From Memphis to Vegas" (Universe, 2004), Julie Mundy, told The New York Sun."He took great pride in the clothes he wore. Even though he was a very humble person, it was the one place in which he showed off his wealth to the world."
In the early 1960s, after serving two years in the U.S. Army, Elvis's wardrobe took a more conservative turn that befitted a silver-screen star of the era. He opted for pale sports coats paired with crisp dress shirts — often unbuttoned almost to his ribcage.
These relatively restrained designs gave way to increasingly outrageous ones when Elvis returned to the stage and began performing regularly in Las Vegas. "Elvis evolved through the '60s and '70s," Ms. Mundy, the London-based editor of an Elvis appreciation Web site, said. "He certainly didn't try to evoke the feeling or the look of the 1950s. He felt it was an era gone by, and he should move with the times."
During the 1970s, Elvis appeared in concert in form-fitting embroidered and bejeweled jumpsuits with wide, gilded belts and studded capes. A special exhibit, "Elvis Jumpsuits: All Access," comprising 56 of these ornate costumes by designer Bill Belew, is now at Elvis's Memphis estate, Graceland. "Bill created this look for Elvis that, somehow, didn't compromise his masculinity," Ms. Mundy said.
Despite Elvis's drastic fashion evolution, there were some elements of his style that remained with him throughout — namely, his affinity for standout colors, bright linings, and jewelry. Much of Elvis's jewelry featured a lightning bolt and the letters "TCB" — for the star's motto, "Taking Care of Business" — and was designed by a Memphis jeweler, Harry Levitch, who often accompanied the star on tour.
"He was blinged out from the very beginning, and only got more so as he got older," the author of "The Girls' Guide to Elvis: The Clothes, The Hair, The Women, and More!" (Random House, 2002), Kim Adelman, said in an interview with the Sun.
But all of the jewelry aside, it was Elvis's long sideburns — tailored in the 1950s and thicker in the 1970s — that remain his most iconic accessory.
Elvis's earlier looks have impacted the costuming of other performers, such as the rocker Jon Bon Jovi, who wore a gold lamé suit on the cover of a 2004 album. Ultimately, though, it was the King's 1970s jumpsuits that would change way Las Vegas performers dressed, with dinner jackets giving way to more experimental attire, and inspire countless tribute artists.
"You could put anyone — any age, sex, or color — in that style of jumpsuit, and you know it's an Elvis takeoff," Ms. Mundy said.

Great thread...I have always been fascinated by Elvis' Style .... he was so cool throughout his life, a trendsetter, a guy who could wear the most outrageous styles and get away with it .... they sell a copy of the black leather jacket from 68 at Graceland with the high collar.....it just looks great on Elvis but it looks ridiculous on any one else who buys it.....
Bill Belew and Gene Doucette don't get enough credit imo for being so hugely important in terms of Elvis' style.....they had a perfect guy to design for! Versace once said he wished he could have designed for Elvis!
We love Elvis Razamatazz .... all the superfly type jackets, that great leather jacket with the long multi coloured fringes, but also the simple classic outfits which show how perfect he was....the 69 stage ghis and the black 69 Press Conference suit.....Concha and Chains suit......

:hmm:elvis clothing..nothing much to say really elvis knew how to dress...incredible outfits ...:hmm:but it seems he forgot how to dress onstage i would say from 75 to 77......sure there were some beautiful stage outfits then ..my personal fav most beautiful jump is the indian feather jumpsuit worn in 75...but like i was saying elvis forgot how to use logical choices for those years i mentioned..he should of gone simply and only two pieces suits..various colors different decoration on them but always two pieces suits for 75-77 it was the only sensible way to go........lets face the facts to wear a jumpsuit like he always used to you have to have the slim body he once had in the good old days lets say like he had up to 73.......if you dont then u shouldint be wearing them..especially for elvis from 75-77 ,,jumpsuits simply shouldint of been used.... two pieces suits would of nicely hidden to acertain point his weight problem during those years...i could imagine elvis a two piece suit in 77 i bet he would of looked really good..go back to the jackson 75 benefit concert elvis was not well and overweight but in that white 2 piece outfit he looked amazing stunning beautiful ..and it was one wild performance (y)(y)(y):king::newyear:

In my opinion you never see a pic of Elvis in the 50`s were he does`nt look cool, he even looks good in the 60`s not counting his film clothes. But in the 70`s he wore some truly awful outfits eg.....Always On My Mind from On Tour, the Burning Love out-take from On Tour.

Matt

;) This is always a nice subject because it relates to how well and how hard a youngman unknown and still in school would have the ability and courage to work side jobs to help his parents and to also dress nicer than most.
His tase in clothing then was incredible, almost impeccable...for that year.
Although I admit those very sexy (mostyly white) jumpsuits came into style, with the Karat'e play theme.. I did not care for the capes... I felt it was without any use whatever, besides to hold some portions of his weight in check...
I liked the loving you scene where Elvis is earing what he hated, plain Jeans, cuffed for that era...
I think he had a few pairs of black levis, that he messed about in, played footnball, but I didn't get close enough to read a label..they might have been mere sweat pants...his black slacks, and jazzy jackets were very fine indeed!
All in all I have seen Elvis in only a few items that I didn't think did him justice.
A plain brown suit or light blue...just wasn't who he was.. some of the stage clothing chosen for him in Viva las Vegas I am referring to...
I think his wardrobe suited him fantastically in flaming star, and Charro.
I don't believe he looked overly sexy in swim suit, but who cares about this part anyway? Arnold he wasn't...but in every other respect he was undeniably better looking than what is considered beautiful today..such as the star called "The Rock" you'd have to be blind not to see the handsome man....Elvis was more like a Russle Crowe in build..and it served him well, one smilee, one laugh..and his famoususe of ... "uhhhhh, well, hummm" melts the hearts of women to this day, robe, or tuxedo.(y)
God how I love this man!

He had an innate sense of what suited him. He really was a trend setter.
There is nobody, and I mean nobody..........who could do as much justice to those leathers though, Awesome!!!!!!
Elvis in his Doctors Tunic pushes all the right buttons for me and so does his Army Uniform, oh and his black 1969 Jumpsuit!! :D
I could not have said it better myself! (y)(y):D

That is very true. He didn't follow fashion, he made fashion! :king::cool:
He was a fashion trendsetter for sure....He was Fashion, in any era, but the yummiest for me was 60/70..have to have the drool bucket handy for those any of those pics;)LOL

Sorry Matt I have no idea of how to scan a photo over to this site but I would like to say that the outfit he wore to see President Nixon is one of my favorites but the one in my avatar and the brown suit similar to it top them all for me.
I noticed the peacock in your avatar. Have you seen the Shop Elvis catalog
that just came out? They have an outfit for sale with the peacock from this
jumpsuit on it. I love it!(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)
The early 70s style (not quite so over the top) was excelllent as far as look taste etc....IMO I liked some of the really over the top clothes but think he looked more with it and masculine in the type clothes he wore on stage and off in the early 70s.

like my name states I prefer the 50s styles becuase i like the styles, fabrics and that where Elvis got his start and it looks cool to see what taste Elvis had in clothing from the 50s to 70s. Plus Im a vintage type person I love all the old original clothing, if I could find it today I would wear it. The colors are carefully picked, and each outfit looks great and havs its own unique style.

I think the coolest clothing that E wore was during the 1970's. The "Superfly" period where he wore the signature Italian leather zip up boots, crushed velvet bell bottomed suits, the huge belts with the chains and jewels on them and two fist full of rings. You can guarantee that he was strapped up too with pistols all over him.

Does anyone notice a resemblance to the jacket worn in post 206 by Tommy to that of the jackets worn by Adam Ant as the dandy highway man in the 80s and I've also seen Jacko wearing similar jackets too.

Tommy you're killing me man, I'm at work checking out shirtless Elvis
Does anyone notice a resemblance to the jacket worn in post 206 by Tommy to that of the jackets worn by Adam Ant as the dandy highway man in the 80s and I've also seen Jacko wearing similar jackets too.
Some very very very beautiful pictures, thank you Tommy :D

I liked his style in the 60's the most. Not just the clothing, but his face seemed even more perfect, and his hair, even more shiny and black. I love his tan too. In pictures from the 60's I notice he wore a lot of suit jackets, and I think he looked extra handsome in them. He just looked really classy and gentlemanly. I also like the outfit he wore in the pictures from when Lisa Marie was born. I think he's the only person I like in a turtleneck, haha. Also, during the '68 Comeback Special...oh man. Every time I watch that I think, he woke up that day and was just the most perfect he has ever looked in his entire life. I'm so happy it's on tape.
