Hi all,
I have some questions regarding Graceland, now these arn't you typical questions guys, i think about the small things alot!
I've often wondered (note, ive never been to Graceland)
1. Did Elvis have neighbours? Is it the type of place where you could look over your fence and have seen Elvis say out on the back porch?
2. Ok, this ones a bit crazy but did the maids hang out his washed clothes on say a clothes line? Did the place have one? Emagine looking into Elvis's yard and seen his pyjamas out to dry..lol. Im not a theif but if i was his neighbour Elvis would have been missing lots of clothes...lol.
3. When you visit Graceland, does the tour start at the front door to the house? How does it work after that? Do you walk in and stop at the door entrance to each room and have a look, or have they made changes eg, knocking down walls to create a better look?(hope not)
I know they are a little silly but i have often wondered about them.
Thanx for any help.
Sam Down Under.

I don't know about the laundry:hmm: No walls have changed that I know of. You do go though the front door and you get a look at the living room and dining room and his mother's bedroom, the kitchen, jungleroom. Then if I remember you procede to go downstairs.

Wasn't there supposed to have been a church or something beside Graceland. Someone might help me out with this. I may be a little off the subject of your question. I do know there were trees that you could climb up and jump over the wall. I wouldn't say it was common but, it did happen more than once. Some people actually made it up to the house after they jumped the wall. Some even made it inside from what I've heard.

if I remember correctly during his meeting with the Beatles a girl made it inside....
I don't think there was a clothes line, maybe they had a room for washed clothes to dry??!!

From what I understand the Beatles were never at Graceland. They met Elvis at one of his homes in California.

Gayle, I checked the aerial view of Graceland and couldn't see a church there. There is one in Tupelo. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

I have read that some kids did climb the wall and swam in the pool at Graceland and that Bruce Springsteen did make it over the wall to the house and was told Elvis wasn't there.

Samcats, the wall around Graceland is quite high so I doubt if there was any chitchats over the wall to neighbours but Elvis did greet quite a few fans on horseback where he could see over. Hey maybe you're right and he did chitchat with neighbours on horseback? I would like to think so.

There was in fact a church next to Graceland up till about the time Graceland opended to the public. The building that houses the corporate offices of Graceland now was that church. Facing the gates it is immediately to the left. We used to be able to sneak up that hill along the wall and peer over the top for better views back in the seventies.

Elvis did have a few neighbours in fact one of them has wrote a book abut their meetings with him titled something like elvis ..over the fence my next door neighbour Elvis Presley.
I went to Graceland in feb of this year my 40th birthday, and i was surprised to see a couple of houses that are backed up to the fence near the meditation garden and apparently they have been there since the '60's so Elvis can't have had too much privacy around that area of the house as these houses are quiet close .

I didn't know there was a church at Graceland. Thank you for clarifying this MIElvis.

Thank you also pacer 1966. It's nice to know that Elvis was able to talk to his neighbours.

Vernons own house backs onto Graceland...just up near the stable......
I think Elvis had the back part closed in and now it's the Jungle Room....I may be mistaken. I think it was a back verandah of some sort.

I have been to Graceland three times now.One of the things that supprised me the most was the close proximity of the neighbors. There is the famous wall all around Gracland but it would'nt take much to look over it if you were a neighbor.Having said that you would have probbly got your lights punched out by Sonny west. To this day Elvis's grave is only a couple of hundred feet from the closest house.
I doubt there was a washing line as most Americans have had a clothes dryer for the past 40 years but you never know. You would have been more likely to see the maids laundry than Elvi's.

Now I'm really confused about the location of the jungle room Carolyn. I thought it was in the basement of the house and I still see pictures of the back veranda as being open. Also pictures show stairs going down to it but I can't figure out where the top of the stairs begin.....?? And where is the pool or billiard room? I have it pictured in my mind as downstairs also off of the pool room.

The room in the basement is the tv room, with all the yellow and blue and the monkey picture on the wall. The Jungle Room is actually off the kitchen in a manner of speaking. Did you see the coverage of the Japanese Prime Ministers vist? Well, Lisa and Priscilla were watching from a little alcove that is kind of between the kitchen and the Jungle Room. There are stairs that go up from the Jungle Room, to I'm not sure where? ;) Maybe to the area where Elvis room is located, so he could come up and down to the kitchen. The house is a bit of a hodge podge of rooms, but still I imagine it suited Elvis' purposes. Somewhere I think maybe even on this site is a floor plan...someone might be able to find it.

Thanks Carolyn. I'll have to re-do my thinking as I've had this in mind for several years.:supriced: I'll have to hunt up those house plans and get it straight.

Those stairs in the jungle room go to the upper terrace (outside)
The stairs leading out of the kitchen to Elvis upper rooms is somewhere else
I'll try to explain with two pictures of mine.
