Hi all,
Im going to make it to Graceland oneday God willing.
My question is, Is it true that nobody is allowed upstairs?
Is it out of respect to Elvis etc or some other reason?
Thanx

If you dress up as Lisa Marie Presley you'll have no problems to enter the rooms upstairs. But I'm afraight, you will only find empty rooms and some webcam filming out of Elvis' bedroom window. All the furniture is stored in a warehouse to preserve it in the best possible state. Visitors are not allowed upstairs. During the first years it's very likely that all the original furniure stayed where it was (at least, when they filmed "This Is Elvis" in 1981 it was in the original condition), but someday I guess they had to move the stuff out. Simply to preserve it. The stair construction doesn't hold so many people (over half a million each year), so the upstairs level of the house will never bee shown officially. But I believe they have filmed everything before they removed the furniture and re-decorated the living room. I can't imagine, that they threw everything out before documenting it properly. Maybe someday we'll see the films/photos. At least when "This Is Elvis" was shot they filmed a lot in the house and on the grounds (with this Elvis impersonator).

The upstairs has always been closed to the public for several reasons. Mainly to preserve Elvis' belongings, secondly it would create a code and fire enforcement nightmare. The entire structure would have to be changed to accomodate the wear and tear and to be made handicapped excesible.

I'm sure somewhere down the line, the new EPE owners once business starts slacking off, will open it just like a long awaited amusement ride.

They could open it someday without really opening it. All they have to do is build a replica of it on the ground somewhere, they own more and more land aroundthere all the time, and furnish it authentic furniture. Most people won't think twice if they think its an exact replica. I don't believe it'll ever be profitable to open the actual room now though because of the reasons orwell gave. No way are they messing with the national landmark status to alter it so it can pass inspection to be opened.
