"Monkee" Davy Jones slams dead icons including Elvis: First it was Irish actor Jonathan Rhys-Meyers raising the 'Elvis was gay' issue (see story below dated 21 June), now MONKEES frontman DAVY JONES has launched an astonishing attack on dead rockers KURT COBAIN, JIMI HENDRIX, ELVIS PRESLEY and JANIS JOPLIN, questioning why society worships people who wasted their lives. The 61-year-old I'M A BELIEVER singer insists they wouldn't have been idolised if they were still alive. Jones says, "I don't have a lot of respect for people like Jimi Hendrix, or Kurt Cobain, or Janis Joplin or Elvis Presley, because they all killed themselves in one way or another. "Although I often wonder what they'd be doing now if they were still alive. Would they be these crumbling lookalikes of the same people, greeting people at the entrance of Caesar's Palace?"

dwarf tossing...:lmfao:

You know, I think it's really in bad taste, that these Elvis wannabes not only insult Elvis, but they also make assumptions and comments of things they know nothing about...(n)

Do any of us really care what Davy Jones thinks?

:lmfao:

Well said...and I don't even know who he is...this says all. :lmfao:

It's just his opinion and for something I can agree him...of course their tragic deaths shocked the world and create much more interests in them.
But their popularity concern their talent, not their deaths.
I like Elvis most because of his voice and charisma and, to be honest, I'd prefer to have him here with us....:'(

Of course I'm interested also in Elvis as human being and I'm always curious to know aspects of his life and the reasons why he left us so early.
Elvis gave us many years of great success, songs, performances...and nobody can forgive it...he was absolutely unique.

How about James Dean?Of course he became a mith only after his death...it's true...but when I watch his movies I have only shivers..nobody can deny he did a great job and he had a very big talent.(y)

Anyway, I don't care about others opinions...yes, to me it's pure envy.
These people should try to concentrate on their job and personal "talent"; I don't think you can reach fame and popularity only with a tragic death if you hasn't left something good in this world..(y)

Veteran actor CHRISTOPHER LEE has never heard a ROLLING STONES song, because he doesn't think he'll like them.
However, the 84-year-old's lack of enthusiasm for popular music hasn't stopped him from appreciating the talents of ELVIS PRESLEY and soul singer LIONEL RICHIE.
He says, "I've only once in my life been to a disco, and I left after about ten minutes.
"I think I may have heard THE BEATLES - on the radio, without realising who there were. But I have never heard The Rolling Stones. They don't seem the kind of music I would like, so why bother? "But I'll tell you one thing: Elvis was a **** good singer - he didn't just gyrate. And I saw LIONEL RICHIE give a very clever performance in Geneva a couple of years ago. He was absolutely brilliant." Source google.com Elvis news yesterday.

Christpher Lee a lover of Opera and famous for his classic portrayal of Count Dracula is quite a discerning listener.

So is the Prime Minister of Japan. He also loves Western Opera and he will be visiting Elvis's beloved Graceland this week with President George W Bush.

It's a far bigger and far more important story than those mentioned on this thread!!!

'Monkee' Jones is probably getting an attack of Male Menopause and is probably finding his road to 'trying' to hit the big-time again very frustrating...awwww...."poor me, poor me, poor me a drink!"

He obviously forgets the people like Hendrix, Joplin and 'The King' were/are worshipped because they were enormously talented...take a hint 'Monkee' and get back in your cage!

I wish he had made this lousy remark to Elvis' face, oh I forgot he's not that tall, he probably would just about reach Elvis' waist. :lmfao: Elvis would have whooped his *** :D

This monkey guy, forgotten his name is so :lame: he's not even worth wasting our breath on. (n) I'd much rather talk about Elvis, his wonderful unique voice, his charisma, but I haven't got enough space here to write down everything, he had so many amazing qualities and no-one can ever change that :king:

I don?t know who that guy is but he forgets Elvis was a legend already when he was alive and doesn?t seem to know he did a lot of good things for people so he didn?t waste his life at all. One thing makes me laugh is how people always talks about how Elvis died and in the shape he was the last years .... do they know how are they going to die ?
Anyway .... why is that guy famous for ? did he invent penicillin or was it a vaccine for aids ? :hmm:

Sounds to me like it's Davy Jones who's frustrated with his life. I knew there was a reason why I always liked Christopher Lee - brains, talent and good taste.

For those of you on this thread who don't know who Davey Jones is - then that's ok it's no big deal...

He is the 'wee' English one and lead singer (?) from the '60's 'Boy' Band "The Monkees" who had hits with "Daydream Believer", "I'm A Believer" and well...er...."Whaayyy, we're the Monkees..." and they also had their own TV show back then and think that's the only reason why they were formed because they were essentially amateur actors and they all got thrown together for the script of this TV show that had surfaced...I think...

Anyway, apparently they weren't musicians to begin with and I think they hired session musicians whenever they were to make their records but passed it off as though it was actually them playing the instruments, which you actually seen them mime to quite frequently on that TV show.

The other 'Monkees' included Peter Tork, Mickey Dolenz and Michael Nesbitt...or was it Nesmith?...was it Michael?....can't remember. So there you go...pretty irrelevant really when it comes to the history of Rock 'n' Roll music...and music in general for that matter...their songs were very much of the 'cotton candy' world of some of Elvis' movie soundtrack stuff - in my opinion.

If they were doing a reunion show I certainly wouldn't go and see them...I would rather pay to see "Take That" at least they could entertain you with some of their dancing.

I watched a few of their TV shows. Corny humour:-) A few good songs. I wouldn't lose much sleep about Jones remarks. Why would anyone:-)

And being Marcia Brady's date on the Bunch in the early 70s. Hey, I'd forget about it if I could, but that stuff was so tragic it is burned on the brain for good now

If Jagger or McCartney had made that kind of Statement then it would be most upsetting and controversial...but Davey 'Monkee' Jones??!!....c'mon everybody, let's put this into perspective!!

I know if someone other than an Elvis fan were to see my reply they would say I'm biased because I'm such a fan of his.

All due respect to the other artists Davey Jones mentioned, Elvis was the "Undisputable King of Rock 'n Roll". There may not have been any of those other artists without Elvis coming first. You can't really put Elvis with other artists because he wasn't part of a group. He stood alone. He not only changed our music but our culture. He is an Icon whether you are a fan or not. It's just a fact. The 20th Century would not have evolved the way it has if he had not been in the picture. I believe he was destined to do what he did.

Who cares what Davey Jones thinks. I'm surprised anyone would be interested enough in his remarks to even publish them. I think I last saw him on the "Brady Bunch Movie" where he played himself. If someone's claim to fame is a few hit records, a goofy television series, and parts in Brady Bunch shows I would be embarrassed to make such a bold statement.

My 2 cents worth.

Jaelousy of course. He mentioned these idols because he himself considers them to be the greatest ones too. And they are. No.1 is Elvis of course. Davy Jones could have not made it in the sixties if there hadn't been Elvis Presley. So he'd better shut up. Over(n)

Actually, the Monkees made some great music. And they did sing and write on some of their later records (not that it really matters).

I've met Davy Jones before and he was a friendly guy. He is just expressing an opinion. It happens to be one I do not agree with, but he has a right to say it. Frankly, I have heard a lot worse said about Elvis - and some of it by those who were friends and family.

And cut it out with the short jokes. It is offensive.

TCE

I think he noticed that the other guy got attention with his remark about Elvis and decided to do the same, so he can be in the "spotlights" again, Afterall, it's easier to say bad things about someone than good things. (Nobody wants to hear the good stuff only the juicy parts.) I find it pathetic and it shows how bad a person can be. It seems that only we Elvis-fans are realistic enough to look beyond Elvis as entertainer and take him for what he was.
By the way, not all shorties are bad. Lol. I'm short too you know (1.38 meters to be exact) and married to a guy who is as tall as Elvis. A funny combination I must admit, but not an impossible thing. And believe me, I would have loved to embrace Elvis's waist, just as I do my hon's. Lol. :lmfao: It has one advantage, you know, at least I never would get backpains, because I never have to bend everytime I want to embrace his waist. Lol.
And Nashville cat, thanks for standing up for us shorties, but we're used to remarks (and I know they not mean it bad or mean in here. At least I don't take it personal.) and some are much worse then said here.

Be safe and take care,

Christel (TCE)

TCE, I am short too. Normally, nothing like that bothers me, but I thought there were a couple of cheap shots taken.

I agree, Jones was probably making this statement for the publicity. (I guess it is working, when is the last time you've seen his name in the news?) However, sometimes it pays to listen to what somebody has to say, and intelligently disagree rather than immediately blast the person.
