Any list of dvd?s or books on Elvis you wouldn?t recommend to buy? I think it would be very helpful as i myself spend a lot of money buying Elvis stuff i hate after seeing/reading them for being very repetitive or not doing Elvis any favour.
:helpsmili
thank you.

you better buy books for pix..not kidding..
I was always more into his spirituel sides which make him a unique person,he is not the image media wanted him to be,I also know not many respect his real interests ,so Elvis himself is the best book to read,I only trust the vibes I'm getting from him..

I've read quite a few, although not as many as some on this forum. I would stay away from any book by the Stanley brothers, Elvis and Me, Elvis-what happened?, the one about the fake daughter (can't remember the name), "Elvis, Priscilla and ME", Elvis the prophet, Elvis by Albert Goldman these are all heavily skewed and sensationalized with massive amounts of untruths ( except for maybe the "what happened " book, which is still negatively slanted and focuses only on the negative, too unbalanced)
There is a lot of junk, books, dvds and even cds. Be careful and do alot of research. TAke time here on this forum as well as other sites on the internet. It's worth the time because it is very easy to waste money in the world of Elvis media. Good Luck!

There is a dvd doing the rounds at the moment called 'OUTTAKES AND BLOOPERS' but don't be fooled. it's just standard clips from movies and interviews that we have seen already! ;)

I would avoid Down at the End of Lonely Street by Patty Broeske and Peter Brown (I think those are the authors' names). It's not that bad of a book, but it's very light on information and it's written in this really cheesy style.
The best thing to do, I think, is to check books out at the library first, then decide whether to buy them. Of course, that might not work, because libraries don't always have what you're looking for. If you're looking for an older book, you might try a used book store. You can usually get used books cheap (unless they're rare), and if the book you bought turns out to be utter crap, you can always go back and trade it in for something else.

Which books to get depends on what you are looking for as far as information.
Good:
A Life in Music & Elvis Sessions III-Both deal with the recording music of Elvis. Both are very informative and helpful.
That's Alright, Elvis-Book written by Scotty Moore, gives us the inside scoop of the 50's Elvis on how it all started from Scotty's point of view. Well written and well balanced as far as Scotty does not trash Elvis.
Last Train to Memphis & Careless Love-Written by Peter Guralnick. A fantastic biography. Peter did his homework and it is very well done. The only problem is in my opinion the first volume I believe was done better then the second volume. I was surprised how short the second volume was next to the first.
Elvis "Unknown Stories Behind the Legend"-Written by Jim Curtin. This book is very interesting due to the fact there are some really cool stories that are not well known. It is well organized in sections that makes it easy to find the stories to read.
Alright:
Revelations of the Memphis Mafia-Written by the Memphis Mafia. Some of them seem to have some bitterness with some of those that they used to call friends. Some of their insight seems to be one sided, but they do recall some cool stories that bring insight, but you still wonder are they just making this up.
Elvis:What Happened?-Probably the most famous Elvis book of all time. The first to bring out the trash on Elvis. I picked it as alright because of it's historical value of being the first to bring it all out in the open. But then again it was done just so they could get back at Elvis.
Bad:
If I Can Dream-Written by Larry Geller. Thank God I didnt pay for this book. It was given to me. Larry is a whacky guy and I do not give much credence to what he says. It seems he wrote this in order to make some money for himself.
I agree & disagree:
The Stanley Brothers-I read Rick Stanley's book and it was well worth it. He never trashed talked Elvis and he wrote it with all fairness, but with David, his Day by Day book was incorrect on numerous statements and it seemed and does continue to seem that David is trying to make money off of Elvis' name. Rick on the other hand is not like that at all. So I am sticking up for Rick and hope you would consider reading his book and do not class him with his brother.
I hope this helps and thanks for the opportunity

To avoid:
Are you lonesome tonight- A fictious book about a supposed to be lover of Elvis, thrown in with a child of his he had with her. I was conned, i thought it was true, but there is way too much detail to be true. avoid this
The ultimate Elvis: This is supposed to be as its title says, it is not! It is the most sloppily produced book i've ever seen, and i bought it for over $20. AVOID!
