View Full Version : Seen them all?
I completed my childhood quest to view all of Elvis' movies just last year, and it was with the "Harum Scarum" DVD that enabled me to complete this task. This movie of course celebrated it's 40th Anniversary last year.
I don't like "HS" but the DVD is great sound and picture quality, so the task was achieved in not bad style. It has taken me the best part of 30 years to view all of EP's 33 films whether it be via television, video or as mentioned DVD. I went many a year of not watching the likes of "HS" and "Easy Come, Easy Go" even though they were circulating on the cable networks, but I just couldn't be bothered to sit through these mediocre scripts having experienced all the other mid-60's vehicles.
So, I'm finally relieved to say I've achieved the goal of viewing all of Elvis' movies. So guys, who else has viewed them all? Who else went through a long period of deciding whether or not to see the last two or three that was left? Who has got quite a few to see still?
It would be interesting to find out - new and old fans alike.
Cheers,
NEA.

Nea, I haven't seen them all...I'm about halfway there...
I don't know if I will see all of them because some have been on tv, but have not kept me interested enough to watch the whole thing...
I can see why Elvis was sick of making some of them...

I've seen them all. Liked most , loved some. Only two I don't like at all were the one you mention Harum Scarum, and the Trouble with Girls which I don't understand what they were going for at all.

Sorry, this might sound offensive, but it's not against Elvis...
They were going for what they always go for in an Elvis movie...$$$$
Storyline is boy meets girl, he sings, they fight, he sings, they make up, the end...lol...just kidding, but really most of the storylines are so similar and if Elvis wasn't in these movie they wouldn't have made anything...
franny
I must admit I do like "The Trouble With Girls" due to the fact that it is a slight departure from the usual plotline described by franny. I feel that Elvis' late-60's movies are a little better value for entertainment and he obviously doesn't appear to be quite as bored in them.
Nevertheless, to each their own - that is what this thread is all about.

I do like most of his movies, but like I said I haven't seen all of them...
I will admit from the ones' I have seen, I prefer the movies he made in the mid-late 50's up to the the mid 60's....I feel he looked happy and was enjoying what he was doing...
NEA, after seeing all his movies which one would you say you liked least and why?

Hi Franny,
I think it's got to be "Harum Scarum" for me - I'm not really into 'Arabian Nights' adventures, and it appears to be a little more absurd than the others but perhaps that's me showing my 38 years - lol.
Also, I don't particularly like the soundtrack of songs in the film...I think the songs are some of the worst Elvis had recorded, but 'So Close, Yet So Far' was a not too bad 'dramatic' number from the score.
Franny, what's your least favourite of the ones you have seen?

Nah its not offensive to me. Last week someone had it in thier favorite elvis movies list. I was curious then what people seen in the film that I don't. I like hearing people say what they seen in it its part of the fun of being here is hearing what others think, like.
As NEA said it was a departure from the other films. I guess it was just one I wasn't supposed to like because I've tried. :) I found something I liked in all of them except those two (harum Scarum and Trouble with......) which just didn't do it for me.

Shamefully I have only seen Love Me Tender and Jailhouse Rock, I will certainly watch them all eventually though.

A couple of the best ones there, elvispresleyfan1935..."Jailhouse Rock" usually battles it out with "King Creole" and "Flaming Star" for the Fan's Favourite...enjoy the good, and the bad, of the rest!

NEA, I would have to say my least favourite is Harum Scarum as well...
It was more of what were they thinking when they made this movie, sorry...
Yes, I agree that King Creole is a great movie to see...
elvispresleyfan1935, make sure you see this one...It was on last weekend and I got to see it....:)

I've seen all exept "Tickle Me". Is it good?
The first, and last, time I saw "Tickle Me" was in 1983 and I quite liked it - some good songs on the soundtrack.
It's definitely worth a watch more so than the likes of "Harum Scarum".

I bought them all but I have not seen them all. It is on my to do list. I have not seen Tickle Me either, but I will watch it next. H R is another I haven't seen, but I may save that one and Paradise, Hawaiian style till last. Any opinions on PHS?
"Paradise, Hawaiian Style" - not as good as "Blue Hawaii" or "Girls!Girls!Girls!" (also filmed in Hawaii) for that matter.
I think it is quite entertaining and there are a few nice Hawaiian-flavoured instrumentals (of course) and some great scenery (of course). But, as for EP's soundtrack material the highlight is "This Is My Heaven" and maybe "Drums Of The Islands" if you like that kind of thing. This movie was also criticised for the fact that Elvis appeared to be putting a substantial amount of weight on for the cameras.
"Datin'" and "A Dog's Life" - two helicopter-based bombs...hate them!

Thanks for the review. I might have to bump that one up on my list. I think I have about ten yet to watch.

The problem with the lesser known Elvis movies is that they may look plain silly at first. But you have to watch them at the right time, with the right feelings to start with.
Also, watching the restored, remastered dvd versions, you can so easily see the horrible cheap backgrounds (that were quite common during the shooting of movies in the 60s). This may spoil the pleasure of watching the movies.
So I rarely sit down in front of the tv to watch an Elvis movie. Most of the time I put them on while I'm working on the computer. And find them really enjoyable this way.
Some of the movies that I saw for the first time ever during the past few years:
* Easy Come Easy Go (didn't like it a bit)
* Wild In The Country (amazingly supriced of the great story and acting)
I can't remember having seen these movies:
* Tickle Me
* Girl Happy
* Stay Away Jope (looking forward to this one)
Its been a while but I have seen all his movies several times over.Ive been a fan since I was 7 and Im now 40.When I was growing up I always watched for them on tv.I of course have all 33 at home now.I admit some are hard to watch like Harum Scarum,Easy Come Easy go just to name a few.Thankfully he was able to make a few good ones.I think Tickle Me is the most under appreciated.

:hmm: er...anyway, for those fans that have seen them all - which film completed your viewing of all of them?

I have all of Elvis' movies on VSH and have seen them all. I have to agree with everyone that Harum Scarum is the worse of the lot. I didn't care for Easy Come, Easy Go and the only scene I enjoyed in The Trouble With Girls was when he sang (can't remember the title) but he was acting like an evangelist and was fantastic. He reminded me of Marjo Gortner? Elvis would have been scary as an evangelist in my opinion.
I did enjoy his first three movies - even Love Me Tender, and Roustabout, Blue Hawaii and Charro. Other than those, I feel they were a waste of time. I can easily believe he was bored with making these movies.

I'd seen all his movies by the time I was six. Fell in complete love when I was five. :) Elvis was my first crush, along with Steve Yzerman.
I went to my grandparent's house every weekend, and the guy that took care of them used to tape them all from the tv for me. Of course, he recorded them at such a low volume the only thing you could hear was Elvis singing - barely.
I didn't care, though. I'd sit right up to the tv and watch for hours, one movie after another. I just liked looking at him, even at that age.
I've gotten a little more discriminating as I've gotten older (and could actually hear the dialogue!), but his movies were my first exposure to Elvis, so they'll always have a soft spot.
King Creole, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, Blue Hawaii, G.I. Blues, Flaming Star, and Kid Galahad are some of my favorites. And I actually like The Trouble with Girls, if only for the renditions of "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard" and the gospel song whose name is escaping me at the moment.
For the last several weeks I've been crazily obsessed with watching TTWII. I watch a least one song from it every day, usually just before I leave for school in the mornings.

I gotta give you that much , that is a heck of a song , a shining moment in what IMO was otherwise a hard to sit through movie. The guy made 29 movies, I liked 28 so I can't complain too much about the one I didn't when I have so many others I can watch instead.
I have seen them all but one. For some reason "The Trouble With Girls" could not hold hold my attention. I do not even know why. Elvis looks terrific in this movie, actually the best he ever looked but it just didn't work for me.
I'm with you on that Leroy. Right down the line, I agree physically he looked well, he sang well. Its the story that killed it for me.

I have seen all the movies and I really enjoy the four 50's films, they were definately the best of his films.
After the army, my favourites were 'Flaming Star' 'Wild In The Country' 'Charro' and 'Change Of Habit'.
'Tickle Me' was another of the 'poor script' films, but worth watching for the comedy element... my fave part is when a knife gets thrown at Elvis, misses him and hits the door, Elvis pulls the knife out of the door to use in defense and is standing there ready to use it, not knowing that only the handle is in his hand... the blade is still in the door :lmfao:
I don't know if anyone else shares my thoughts on that, but I can never think about it without bursting out laughing!! the soundtrack is pretty awesome to, due to the fact that it's full of tracks that were not meant for the movie.
The worst in my opinion is 'Double Trouble'... terrible! for example: Old Macdonald, need I say more? (n)

sackofnachos, welcome to our forum. Apart from Elvis, I'm also a big fan of Steve Yzerman myself. TTWII is unbelievable, though I'm no fan of some of the fan interviews, his performances from that movie were incredible to say the least! Not sure if you've seen Elvis On Tour yet, but that was excellent as well. It was made in 1972 and though EP doesn't look as great as he did in TTWII, his performances were great.

Thank you for the welcome, Joe Car!
I do have On Tour and I love that as well, though not as much as TTWII. Probably due to the picture and sound of the DVD of TTWII verses the VHS of On Tour. LOVE the "Bosom of Abraham"/"Lead Me, Guide Me" scene.
As for his EOT looks, Elvis seems really pale under those concert lights! Washed out, almost, and a little more tired. I dunno. I wish they'd put it on DVD. Great performances, for sure!
I used to have the original VHS of TTWII (can't find it anymore). When I was little, I never minded the fan stuff; never really thought about it. I think the "special edition" is great quality, but after lurking around here, knowing how much they left out, it's disappointing. Still, I love it, just to be able to hear everything so well, and see it with such crispness. And I'd never heard "Just Pretend" before; it's become one of my favorite songs, along with his version of "I Can't Stop Loving You".
....All right, enough rambling.

I've seen them all many times. I was was way too young for the '50s movies in the theater and I also missed some in the early '60s. But starting with "Follow That Dream" I saw them all on the big screen. Back in the days when going to the movies was an "event".
My favorite film from the movie years of the '60s is Blue Hawaii.

hi folks,
I own and also have seen all the movies, I have to admit though that there is a few I can really do without and I hardly ever watch most of them, to list my favourites though is easy, they are:
loving you.
king creole.
jailhouse rock.
follow that dream (great comedy).
stay away joe (great comedy again).
flaming star.
charro.
wild in the country.
The ones I cant stand are:
harum scarum.
the trouble with girls.
double trouble.
the remainder are ok and I can take or leave them, depending on the mood i'm in, cheers, rickster.
