Just out of curiosity, what does everyone think of Elvis' relationship with Anne Margaret? So many people during their time considered her the "female elvis", or his definate contemporary and equal, and I know that there are some mixed opinions on this, so I'm wondering what people think. Also, if anyone has any reccomendations on stuff I can read on this topic as well, please let me know. thanks!

I think they would have been a perfect couple, better than Elvis and Cilla..She sure was like a female Elvis, LOL.. It's a shame they were not together
That is MY opinion, ;)

I like Ann Margret and I think they would be a great couple because they had a lot of things in common. If you watch the movie "Viva Las Vegas" and the pictures they made for the movie you can see a lot of electricity and complicity in their glances and we know they had a true love affair.
Anyway, I don't think Ann could be the kind of woman Elvis wanted as a wife...everybody tells he prefered quiet women and that he was very conservative about the role of the woman in a marriage and so on.
I think he liked Ann because they had fun together but who knows if he had ever thought to marry her instead Priscilla...

I agree with Indre and ForEver The King, I really think they were great together and perhaps Elvis might of married her. (we will neverknow)

I LOVE ANN-MARGRET!!! She is a beautiful and a dynamic lady. And a great dancer as well! I think the nickname of "the female Elvis" fits her  She was, back then, a provocative dancer (hip moves, like Elvis or some sort ;) ). The whole attitude was daring.
"Viva Las Vegas" is one of my very favorites because of that chemestry between :king: & Ann. People can see the were truly in love. For me they were a magnificent young and full-of-energy couple...
I saw a t.v show (can't rememer the title) time ago, where Elvis "hair-style-designer" (:p) said to the camera something like: "He [Elvis] came to me and said: 'I can't decide between Ann and Priscilla'... So I replied to him: pic Priscilla, she's a fine lady. With Ann, your egos [speaking of their astistic careers] soon will crash and you'll have trouble... And then, Elvis married Cilla".
One of many stories about Elvis & Ann... I would love if they were a couple until this time...

I couldnt agree more. They looked great together. That had both that x-factor, charisma. But Elvis looked for other qualities in a woman to be his wife. Wish he hadnt ..

I have a lot of time for this lady because she has always shown respect to EP as she calls him.
I`ll never forget seeing her in an interview when they started talking about Elvis and she said "We`re getting a little personal here. I have so much respect for this man that I can`t betray him even in death."
She wouldn`t talk about him.
I haven`t heard a bad word about her so she must be a good woman.

I hate to put a damper on everybody's enthusiasm, but despite the obvious on screen chemistry and off screen friendship, I don't think a marriage between the two would have worked. Why? Because Elvis wanted a traditional wife, who stayed at home, took care of the house and the family etc. waiting for him and waiting on him. Ann-Margret is showbiz, baby. She's been a "working" girl since her late teens, and I believe she still works be it TV movies or - I don't know if she still does this - shows in Vegas. She may have been able to give that up for a while, but somehow I believe she would have gotten the showbiz itch after a while......

Right Joanne...this was our personal wish...but we have also said that it couldn't have been a good marriage because they had a too similar life and Elvis a had others tastes for a wife....but I still see them as a nice couple, more than any other girl he had (also after Priscilla)...

After reading all the posts in this thread, a thought came into my head somehow - that Elvis was never really happy. That fame actually destroyed him personally :'( That is SO friggin sad. He had deserved to love and be loved, sincerely. But never really was, I think.
Not that I tried to say something NEW now, but I just shared my thoughts, lol.

You're right Indre!
Yes, success doesn't mean necessarily HAPPYNESS and Elvis is a clear example.
Anyway...I think he had happy moments in his life but not a HAPPY LIFE in general.
Maybe it happens also to us, in our lives...we can reach serenity in some periods but it's hard to tell.."Oh yes, I'm totally happy".
Elvis got a lot of good things from his life and could do a lot for himself and people he loved...anyway, I think he felt very lonesome because he asked himself if he had real LOVE aroud him or just opportunism.
Returning to Ann...well, we can't know if she could have been his twin soul or if Cilla was his twin soul (I don't think so!!!).
My modest opinion is that when you are in that position it's hard to find a twin soul, someone who really cares about you, I mean in a genuine way...someone who looks at you as a person and not as a star...and I'm sure this was his biggest suffering: HE LOST (OR HE NEVER FOUND) HIS POINTS OF REFERENCES and he felt betrayed too many times (by his dad when he married another woman, by Cilla after the divorce, by his "friends" when they wrote the book, by the Col. when he didn't consider his wishes and so on..)...:'( :'(

I know Ann Margret has always refused to talk about her love affair with Elvis but I know she wrote an autobiography years ago called ANN MARGRET:MY STORY...has anyone read the book?Did she speak about Elvis in the book? I'm just curious....

I`m going to get it from my library.
I heard that she didn`t want to put Elvis in the book but he was such a special part of her life that she did so but by all accounts she didn`t betray him or reveal any really intimate details like Priscilla did.

yes she talks about her time with Elvis in several chapters - how they met - how long they stayed together - that she knew it wouln't last because he had to fulfill his promises (Cilla) - after their separation he continued to send flowers in shape of a guitar every time she had a show in Las Vegas - and she talks about his death and the funeral, she attended....maybe I can quote more when I have more time;)

some details from the book:
First after they started the movie Viva Las Vegas they were qiet, polite, careful but soon they felt an electricity they couldn't control.
Usually Elvis was surrounded by his guys but after a time Ann noticed that soon she came over everyone would suddenly leave and they would be alone.
They had much in common, they loved motorcycles, music, performing, loved their families and had a strong believe in God. They were talking a lot.
She remembers one day Elvis gave her a ride home on his Harley Davidson. They roared across the MGM lot, outside the gate, and 3 blocks away they ran out of gas. There was a gas station at the corner , Elvis wanted to pay but he didn't have any money - neither did Ann - The young attendant recognized Elvis, asked for an autograph and filled the tank - the next day Joe Esposito payed the bill
(A FUNNY STORY!!!)
The day JFK was killed, she drove to Elvis' house in Beverly Hills. She found him glued to thr TV - she sat down to him and they watched together and cried.
They were together almost a year ...They saw each other perodically then everything halted .Elvis had to fulfil his commizment . He was alway honest to her about that.

Having researched her a bit on the internet the people that have had the pleasure of meeting her say she is a beautiful, sweet person.
She has worked hard all her life and unlike some people hasn`t acheived it off the back of someone else.
I remember seeing the film Who Will Love My Children and she was fabulous in that.
This is a segment from an interview when she was asked about Elvis-
Larry King :And had a major relationship with Elvis
Ann :Are you going to start with me again?
Laughter
Larry King :No. Hey...
Ann :Isn`t this -- you`re going to start!
King :No it`s just -- it would be nice to talk about it once in a while.
He wasn`t bad, right? He was a good guy.
Ann :Yes
King :You never knock Elvis?
Ann :No, no.
King :o.k. never mind.

Thanks a lot binoreisen and Joanne...now I know more and I'll be curious to read the book, not only because her connection with Elvis, but also because she's a great and complete artist...
I saw an interview with Annie when her book just came out. On it she stated what a wonderful FUNNY and TALENTED person he was. When asked if they were "Soul mates" she bowed her head and said almost as if to herself, "We were very much alike, yes."

I think Elvis and Ann Margaret had a mutual respect for each other...and they were a lot alike...I do think they cared about each other, but don't know if they would have married, since Elvis had always said he didn't want to marry a "starlet"...He was stated as saying he wanted someone at home waiting for him...

I know it may come across as disrespectful, but I don't mean it that way by any means.
I try to avoid everything from Ann Margret taken or done of the 60s. That goes for most people that are 'time-captured' in a certain decade. When I think of Bing Crosby, I think of the movie "White Christmas". Seeing him in a 1970's tv-program (in full-colour) takes away some of the nostalgic, pleasant feelings that I have with "White Christmas".
That also goes for Ann Margret. I prefer to keep the memory of her from "Bye Bye Birdy" up to some years after "Viva Las Vegas".
It's almost the same as not wanting to know how particular movies are made (the 'behind the scenes').

I understand what you're saying, Albert. Some things you just wish had stayed a secret to retain some myths. To me things like reading that both Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy were heavy smokers sort of ruined their public image for me. Now you see pictures of two beautiful, refined women with their own class and you can almost smell the nicotine at the same time!(n)
I never was an Ann-Margret fan, yep, not even in Viva Las Vegas. But apparently she was considered a good match (if only temporarily) for Elvis by some. I'm sure they had a great time, but Elvis was not one who could've lived with a woman with as big showbiz aspirations as he had, or any other big career for that matter.
As a person, at least the way she presents herself in TV interviews, Ann grates on my nerves, with her studied pauses and poses, secretive looks etc. When I read people saying how "natural" she is, I always feel they're talking about another person than I've been viewing. That said, apparently she IS one of the nicest most charitable people in showbiz. I'm just not that into her.....(PS, I liked her best, even more than in VLV, in Tommy, the Who musical).

..or the tv movie "Our Sons".
I think that was an inspiring role by Ann-Margret. This movie was rather controversial, because there was this theme of a woman saying that being gay is wrong - turns out she is the mother of an AIDS patient. This was Ann-Margret's role: a conservative woman from the South who doesn't seem to like 'one of them' all too much.
Without discussing the theme that being gay is wrong, I feel it was an interesting movie and it proved Ann-Margret had enough talent to play a serious role like this one. Another actress in the movie was Julie Andrews, who is well-known for her role in the movie 'the sound of music'. It was fascinating to see these characters interact.
One thing is for sure: Ann-Margret aged with grace and I can only wish that Priscilla had done the same thing: a more natural approach! I guess she would have been a lovely bride, although she experienced the same kind of pressure because of her being active in show-business.

Thanks for the pictures of Ann. She's still beautiful and poised.
franny,
You were asking if we had seen "Bye, Bye Birdie", I have. You said that would have been a good part for Elvis. I honestly believe that part was written to make you think of Elvis. Look at all the similarities. He's a rock 'n roll star, all the girls are after him, he's got dark hair, glimmering suits, and what's supposed to be a sexy smile, I guess. Yeah, I think the people who made it thought the audience would watch it and compare it to Elvis' life.
This is to anyone who can give me an answer. Ya'll were talking about a video Joe had out. A video showing Ann talking and Sheila talking. Is that right? Is this video still available? What's the exact title? I read somewhere that Joe had put a video out and Miss Priss wasn't happy with it and he stopped selling it because of her and re-released it after he changed it around. (Joe's supposed to be on the outs with Miss Priss since this happened.)
Do any of you know about this video? I'd like to see interviews of women besides Miss Priss. I see a lot of Linda on different interviews but, I don't see any other girlfriends of his.

I bought a DVD called 'Elvis: The Final Chapter' from amazon.com. There is an interview with Sheila Ryan and Joe Esposito on the DVD. I can't remember if Ann is on there or not. It has been a while since I watched the special. Here's an excerpt from the jacket of the DVD:
"Journey through the last years of Elvis' life - as told by the people who were there 24 hours a day. You'll hear from Joe Esposito. You'll hear an amazing story from Sheila Ryan, one of Elvis' long term affairs. Many of Elvis' close friends and co-stars: Sheree North, Mary Ann Mobley, Diane McBain, and Steve Rossi will explain the relationship between Elvis and Colonel Parker...."

TlcElvis, this sounds like a good one. Thanks for letting us know about it. It would be interesting to hear what Sheila Ryan and others have to say. I think she was a pretty decent lady too.
I wonder if the video that Joe put out that Priscilla objected to was the Elvis home movies one? I've seen it advertised on eBay and I was tempted but didn't go after it. I have the "best friend" one.
I have the video of Bye, Bye Birdie and I like it but I'm not so sure I would have liked to see Elvis play the part of the rock star because he was such a jerk and didn't end up with Ann. Wasn't it Bobby Rydell that did that eventually won her heart in that one?

I believe Priscilla objected to Joes home movies of elvis video which I think came out about twenty years ago or there abouts.
She took him to court I think, I know she brought legal action against him but I don`t know for what reason unless she stated that the home movies were not his to put on a video and belonged to the estate or something which is ridiculous considering he is the one that recorded them.
He was very angry about it at the time and couldn`t believe that someone who had been his friend could do this to him.
Priscilla merely said that she had to do it.
It was resolved I think and they are friendly today but I think Joe maybe overcompensates by saying positive things about Priscilla maybe because if he keeps well in he`ll be able to do more projects like the best friend remembers dvd where he says nice things about Priscilla.
He mentions for instance that Elvis decided it was time to get married and doesn`t include details that he knows to be true such as Elvis`s hand was forced.
He also says what a wonderful mother she is and all that crap.
He wants to continue making money (like all the people around Elvis) and so maybe by kissing her butt and singing her praises on TV it helps him to do so as she holds the power.
It does make me loose respect for the guy though as he should tell the truth.

I agree Joanne, it's not a nice way for Joe to be. I thought it was the home movies that Joe took. Thanks for confirming it. I wonder if Priscilla was ever close to anyone at Graceland that she hasn't turned on at one time or another? Elvis' cousin Patsy maybe? Was she on the DVD Elvis by the Presleys or was it just Priscilla's sister? I can't remember.

You're welcome Diane.
Here's some of what Sheila had to say:
She gave some background on herself. She left home at 18 and moved to Vegas to be with friends. Her father left when she was younger. Her boyfriend was a gambler and wanted to get rid of her one night so he told her to see Elvis' show. That's how she met Elvis. Elvis' entourage apparently ranked her pretty high (scale of 1-10) so she got to meet Elvis after the show.
Within the first week, Elvis bought her a new car and wardrobe. She spent time at Graceland and his LA home. She had a snoring problem so Elvis called one of his doctors. The doc removed her tonsils the next day. She said the romance was short-lived and it became more of taking care of him...keeping him alive.
Elvis was still seeing Linda at the time. She said that she didn't have a lot of self esteem so she didn't complain about the other women but Linda did.
Sheila met James Caan (father of her child) and for the first time, she was not accessible to Elvis. At that point, Elvis called her at 4 AM one morning and promised her the world but it was too late. She had fallen in love with James Caan. Elvis passed away about a year later.

Thank you tlc for the information on Sheila Ryan. I think I also read somewhere that she said that Lisa as a young child did not like her. We know she liked Linda. There's a beautiful photo of Sheila giving Elvis a hug after a concert in his suite I believe in the year 1975 from the suit he was wearing.

I don`t like Sheila Ryan at all. She is interviewed on The Ultimate Collection II and also on another video but I can`t remember the title.
She is very crude talking about sex with Elvis and I think it was totally unneccessary.
She`s made some money and thats all people like that care about.
She certainly isn`t attractive anymore and Elvis wouldn`t look twice at her.
I have no time for the woman.

Joanne, I went back and read over some of the posts and came across another that mentioned Sheila Ryan wasn't so nice a person as I thought. Maybe that's why she didn't last long. I doubt if she was crude that Elvis would have wanted her around his daughter. He also didn't like aggressive women. I do know that Lisa was very fond of Linda so that's probably why she didn't want Sheila around. Linda was by far the best of the two from all accounts.

Sheila talked about sex with Elvis in the dvd that I mentioned earlier. I agree Joanne - it was crude and unnecessary.
She also sold a bottle of his pills on ebay (if you can believe this web site).

Listen CLOSELY to the Viva Las Vegas FTD & listen to their interaction.
Some noteworthy moments ...
'The Lady Loves Me' Tk9 - On the 'Silver Screen' (http://www.elvisinfonet.com/elvissilverscreen.html) FTD Ann-Margret says at the start, "What do I do?" to which Elvis replies, "You give me a cue". This is missing from this release and the audio mix is also different with Elvis centre channel this time. A classic cool duet but the real delight is discovering Ann-Margret leaning very close to Elvis as she sings, "I'd rather kiss a rattlesnake." Her voice obviously bleeds into his microphone. Now why would she be making a point of that lyric to Elvis!? I hope that Priscilla never listened that closely on headphones!
'You're The Boss' Tk3 - The version of this on 'Silver Screen' had some added echo across the whole mix which seemed a little unnecessary. Here it is pure Elvis & Ann-Margret purring very nicely together, especially on the fade out. Give yourselves a treat by turning off the left (backing) channel and listen to just the two of them interact. (Listen to their gentle moan at 00:30 after "You've got me beat upside down..."). Let's face it, with Ann-Margret singing, "When it comes down to love, you're a horse", sex was on the cards!! Note that after that line on the Master Elvis comments to Ann, "Oh Yeah" which was missing from this earlier take!
'I Need Somebody To Lean On' is a highlight as you can now hear Elvis' every whisper and breath. Another gem is the Master of 'You're The Boss' where they have now properly separated Elvis & Ann-Margret's vocal to left & right channels. Even better is the fact that it runs on 17 seconds longer than the original and there is some lovely vocal interplay & laughing between them at the end that we have never heard before. While several of the extra outtakes have already been released there are still 11 new takes, or false starts, that have never been issued before.

Love Ann-Margret -
Cheers
Piers
