1956: Visiting Las vegas, Elvis presley dropped backstage to visit Liberace after one of Mr. Piano`s shows at the Riviera. ``Can I call you Lee?`` asked Elvis. ``Certainly``. replied Liberace. ``If I can call you Pres!``.
A lover`s lament called ``Heartbreak Hotel`` sung by Elvis presley is the biggest-selling record in the USA this week, and the 21-year-old hillbilly who howls, mumbles, coos and cries in way through it, has become overnight the biggest singing attraction for teenagers in this country. A thirty-five dollar a week truck driver two years ago, Presley appeared on a few TV shows last fall with guitar in his hand and a sob around every note. Shortly girls were quivering and fainting whenever he turned up to sing ``Long Tall Sally``, ``Hound Dog`` and ``B;ue Suede Shoes`` on a tour of Texas last week. They kicked through a plate-glass door in Amarillo to get Elvis to autograph their arms and underclothes.
In San Diego the shore patrol was called out to save him from an over-enthusiastic audience. This week Elvis headed to Las vegas to pick up about $12,500 dollars for week`s wailing. Asked what it is about him that makes all the ladies go limp Elvis answers, ``I don`t know, but I sure hope it doesn`t stop!``...Elvis Presley and marlon Brando got quite a scolding from James Scali, chairman of the Custom Tailor guild who complained bitterly about what he referred to as ``our sloppiest celebrities``. He continued, ``I think that there ought to be a law or at least public pressure requiring Presley and Brando to dress properly. It`s a shame they set such a bad sartorial example to tje youth who worship them. Perhaps both should travel abroad or get married to women who would make them stop looking so messy``.
this ``vegas news`` will be feature in our next club`s newsletter with special 1956 ``flashback`` that I will put here in a few days. Hope you will enjoy it..50 years of Heartbreak Hotel and 50 of the now famous rock n roll album ``ELVIS PRESLEY`` (LPM 1254) RCA VICTOR (APRIL `56).
HAVE A NICE DAY AND A VERY WONDERFUL 2006 IN PEACE,
