I have been there about ten years ago. By the time I flew over to the states I was 19 years old and it was a dream come true. I visited the house three times and I was surprised how small it was (I know families with larger houses). But I liked it. Although it isn't really my taste of furniture, I think its cool if someone has his own style and furnishes the house the way he likes it without thinking about what other people might think. Around the house they have built something like Disneyland wich is completely tastless, but it earns a lot of money. And that isn't the worst thing to do. Especially if you earn your millions with an entertainer who died so long ago. Long live the king!

I`ve been there 30 times from 1977 to 2004. My next trip will be in 2007 with 84 members from the club and 2 buses. WE will stay in Memphis for 5 complete days, 3 days in Nashville and 3 days in Branson (Missouri).
have a nice day, bogarcon

I've been there twice, once in the mid-90s and then once in 2002. I enjoyed the second visit much more. It was amazing to pull up to the house and have Elvis singing "Welcome To My World"! I also enjoyed seeing the Lisa Marie jet, the jumpsuits, and the Meditation Garden. I took my girlfriend at the time (we are now married) and she loved it as well, even though she was just getting to know EP at the time. Now she is a big fan.

I went last month when I was visiting friends in Memphis- I really loved it, it was alot to take in though, so I will need to go back:)

my friend's husband once fitted a generator in Graceland (in the late 60's), and he got a tour of the house by Elvis himself!!!!!....how cool!!:king:

You can`t really explain it but I had been a fan for 10 years until I made the visit from England and as soon as I had been I had to go back there.
Theres such a pull to go back that you can`t explain.
Being in the places where he lived, shopped etc is the most beautiful experience ever.

Who has been to Graceland? I have, it was my dream for 5 years and now i'v done it! I was there on 8/21/05. I'm thinking to go there for Elvis week next year.

I've been to Graceland twice....once in 1988 and again for Elvis Week 2000!!! (y)

If you can go for Elvis Week, you definitely should....while Graceland is cool to visit anytime of the year, being there for Elvis Week is unlike anything I have ever experienced before!!! The best way I can describe it is one giant family reunion!!! There are Elvis fans from all over the world, from all walks of life there, and it is simply amazing to meet fans from everywhere!!! I met several people while I was there for Elvis Week and have maintained friendships with them all since then!!!

If you can go for Elvis Week....I would recommend it HIGHLY!!! :)

Hi,
When they first opened the gates my aunt and uncle took me and my brother. I was so enthralled that I can hardly remember the details of the visit. I went next in the late 80's and took a military friend of mine. It had changed a lot but we were in such a hurry ( she had to catch a plane) we didn't get to see everything. I have not been back since but I have been the Smithsonian Rock and Roll museum in downtown Memphis and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Memphis. It has a great Elvis area and the Indian Jumpsuit is displayed there along with one other. I met Howling Wolf's son there and he sang a few bars of one of his dad's songs for my aunt, (who is a big Howling Wolf fan) she was beside herself.

As far as Graceland. It has to be experienced to gain a true appreciation. Some may think it is a bit gaudy but in the 70's that deco was very cool. (talking about the Jungle Room, TV room and the Pool room). The Meditation Garden made me sad both times, but I guess as a fan it would be hard not to be. I want to go back because it has changed dramatically since then and I would like to take my time and go by myself. Now being in my 40's I feel a bit different about Elvis ( in a good and more introspective way) and would definately have a deeper experience being there.

Go there, take your time and have fun!! You'll love it!!

I was there this past summer. But like everyone says, it is so much to take in, you defenitly need more than one visit. I defenitly hope to go back soon!! It is really special to see the home of Elvis, and it gives you a greater understanding of him.

I almost went in 86 but since then have never made the trip. My younger brother and his wife have been 2 times. Whats funny is I'm only about 5 hours up river on the Mississipi and could have visited easily when he was alive, I kick myself every time I think about it, back then I thought "I can always go there and maybe see him at the gate"

Won our first trip to Graceland 1997 for the 20th Anniversary.

Returned September 1999 and went to see Tupelo and Nashvlle, again in June 2002 and August 2003.

Yes their is an aura about Graceland that is uncanny and I don't believe in all that stuff:blush:

I was there in 2004 and I would recomment it for every Elvis Fan.

It was the trip of my life and I would not of changed a thing about it.... absolutely awesome trip!!!!! Visited Tupelo where he was born and lived until he was 13 years old, Beale Street is a must(so much to see and do there), the hardware where his mom brought him his first guitar, Sun Studio, Elvis McDonalds, Humes High School, gravesite, the he was first buried , The Lisa Marie tour, museums of many of his cars & belongings but the Meditation Garen was my favorite. Early in the morning when few people were here... the sun was coming up abd a soft breeze was blowing... magical... is the best word to discribe it. :D ;) Dovey

Staying at Heartbreak Hotel was pretty cool too!!

Franny, I was there for 4 days and I am sure if you were there for a week you could easily see everything. I would of liked to spend more time on Beale Street and of course BB Kings and Hard Rock Cafe. We were on the go the whole time we were there.

If you get the chance to go..... you will never forget it... Dovey:) ;)

franny

Franny,

You are not allowed to use a flash inside.... but you can take pictures inside the mansion without the flash. If you get the highest speed (800) you can get some pretty nice pictues. Mine did not come out because I used 400 speed but a lady I meet there from Ohio used the higher speed and sent me copies of hers. Her pictues are really great!!! (You will meet some of the sweetest people in the world there.... I sure was lucky.... and I am sure others are too) Elvis fans are the greatest.

One thing I should tell you is that if is a really busy day and people are pushing you through... just step back & let them go by you.... there is just so much to see and take in that you need to take the time to listen to the headphones and look at each thing at your own pace.

Know that you will have a great time. Dovey ;)

I've lost track how many times! Probably in the neighborhood of 25 times. One of the coolest times was when Elvis was recording at Graceland in 1976. Unfortunately when we got there the first night and arrived at the gates we were told by Harold that we just missed him going in at about 11pm. Dam wish we gotten there sooner. As it was once we drove into Memphis we checked in at our room on Winchester Rd. (Days Inn) then went straight to Graceland. This was my first time and we drove right past it. Love going there! Will be there in 07' for sure.

I've been many times, I try and go every June. I'm only coming from the Chicago Area and thats a pretty good drive for a day. I've driven straight home before from Graceland but I usually split the trip on the way down into 2 days so I can be well rested for Graceland .

I have Been to Graceland last March, i was excited counting the days to go. Don?t get me wrong, i enjoyed the trip and Memphis a lot but when i got to Graceland i realized it?s not Elvis home anymore, for me it felt just like a museum with all that circus around. Anyway ... that?s the closest you can get to Elvis and that?s why i?ll come back i suppose.

Just went for the third time today! It was quite an experience. It has changed so much since I was last there in 1987. Some for the better and some not. It felt more like a home, untouched somewhat, in 1987. The cars were still under the carport and the racquetball court was still there. Now it's a display area. There are some other changes too where the house has been altered and blocked off to accomodate the tour and flow of people. But, there are alot more items displayed and things to see and learn and participate in. I spent about 5 hours there and in the other display areas. It definately feels like more of a museum now, but I did have that feeling of "presence" in some of the areas. I took over 200 pictures, but couldn't do it at the gravesite. I did in 87, but this time it affected me differently. It felt disrespectful so I just sat there and paid my respects and meditated a bit. I did take some pix of the beautiful statues and stainglass windows that are in the "Meditation GardeN" . It's tough, though, to end the tour there. I went back through some of the house, just so I could end my stay on a more positive note. I would recommend that to anyone. They. don't really mind it if it's not too crowded. I'll post some pix once I get home

I went in 2004 and met up with PS Annie...what a great thrill that was...to be emailing someone for a while then meeting in person. We will meet up again in 2007 and hopefully have more time to spend eating, drinking and generally being merry....hey Annie. It's such a busy time during EW...so many things to do and not a lot of time. Tupelo is also a great place, and lots of friedly people down there, all ready to share their stories with you. A lot of care has been taken to bring the Birthplace back to lif again, it's so well maintained and an easy place to just sit back and relax to take in the atmosphere. I also loved Nashville....next time I think we are staying a couple of days there. So much history and you can lose yourself in the Country Music Museum, as well as the Grand Ol' Opry....although you do need to remember that they told Elvis virtually not to come back to the Opry....BIG MISTAKE.....
see you soon Annie....only a few more months, but a lot of money to be saved.....thats the down side and it took me 28 hours to get there the first time....be good to be able to afford Business Class.....but have you yet to meet a rich Elvis fan??????:P

I had never talked to Elvis fans until I joined this Elvis forum. I didn't even know they had such forums. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to play inside the gates and ride around on a golfcart while Elvis was home. I very seldom ever look back on those memories. But, after talking with all of you here and knowing how big Elvis is to the world I realize how forunate I was.

I have never been through the gates since Elvis died. Playing in the yard and riding around on the golfcart are enough memories for me. God Bless Elvis.

Hi Folks,
been to Graceland twice now, first time was in January 2003 which was a christmas present from my fiance and the second time was January 2006 which was a 40th birthday present to from my fiancee (Fiona), I shall be returning to the 'holy grail' again in 2007 and I cannot wait.

It is such a magical place and once you go there it only pulls you back again and again. I've loved every moment I've been there and I can't wait to go back again, cheers for now, rickster.

Was coming home to Australia after living in the UK for a year, and made it to Graceland on my 21st birthday in 1988. Spent a week in Memphis, went through the house 15 times, and down to Tupelo.
I honestly don't remember the first time I went through the house, it was all too much to take in. Hence, the other 14 times through!
On the morning of my 21st, I walked alone up to the grave and just sat quietly for an hour. An amazing experience. Elvis' Aunt Delta came out briefly and said hello to me.
I am going to the States next year for four weeks, and this time I'll be seeing more of the country: and this time, it will be my 40th birthday at Graceland!
Can't wait. Graceland seems to have changed a lot since '88.
Also going this time to Los Angeles; Las Vegas (I am going to stay at the Hilton, and see if I can get a glimpse into Elvis' suite - even though the decorations have changed since he was there, of course!); Mount Rushmore (always wanted to see that - would love to see a version with Elvis, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis); Memphis, Nashville, Washington DC and finally New York.
It doesn't seem like 19 years since my first visit, and I'm lucky to be going back ... it's a long and expensive trip to the States from Down Under, and I never really thought I'd go back. But what the hell, I'm only 40 once.
(Oh, and I was in Egypt for my 30th birthday ... and the day after, I was in the original city of Memphis, Egypt ...) (y)

Been to Graceland only once in my life so far and that was back in 1977 when our family met Vernon coming out the gates in his Gold Chevy 4x4 Blazer and talking Vester into driving us up to the front door to see Elvis' all White Stretch Continental and then seeing ol' Red West drive in the gates then come out a few minutes later when he spotted my mom to flirt with we noticed a bullet proof vest he had gotten to take out to the Memphis airport for Elvis as this was while the King was still with us. You just could not go up to the doors of Graceland at that time like you can today. ..........sorry to run on here but just wanted to describe this cherished event for you all.(y)

I went back in the summer of 1991......hate to say that it was my only trip there so far.
Due to money problems.......I have never been back. But what an experience it was.I'm glad that I shared that moment with my Dad while he was still living. He kept saying that he wanted to return since there was more to see now.......but he passed in November of 2005.So when I do go again it will be in loving memory of my Dad whom I give credit to outside of Elvis himself for me being the die-hard fan that I am.

Having been a big fan since 1960 I finally made it to Graceland in 2005, again 2006 both times for 2 weeks, I was there for Elvis week 2007.This year we spent 2weeks in Heartbreak Hotel. I am so lucky to have been over so many times. Each morning I spent an hour with Elvis in the Meditation Garden...wonderful. I hope to go back Jan 2010.

I went in June of 1988 on my Mothers birthday. My Mom & Dad went on the first day with me and the next just me & mom went (My dad stayed in the motel) The autos were under a sherter then! I wanted to sit in the Pink Caddy but they wouldn,t allow it. I sat in the Pink jeep (everyone has) When were inside graceland i wanted to bolt up those stairs so bad! But, i would,ve been touring a Memphis Jail cell instead. Or not? Banned for life? Heaven forbid.:lmfao:

My first trip to Graceland was in July, 2008. Although I only live about 5 hours from Memphis, I had never been there nor had any desire to go, but my 8 year daughter, who is a new and young fan of The King, had been asking to go for months, so she and I took an 'all girls' vacation and finally made the pilgrimage. Although I wasn't very impressed with the house b/c its size and style are not uncommon in my part of the country, I was rendered literally speechless, and surprisingly so, when I finally made it awards building (the old slot car track room) and Hall of Gold and even more so when I made it to the Racquetball Court. For a man whose career span a mere 23 years and in death for even longer, his professional acheivements were simply astounding. I was rendered completely without descriptive words when I finally walked into the room in the racquetball court with all of those awards reaching skyward with no room for any more awards to be displayed. For a single person to have acheived so much in his short career and since his death is simply unbelievable.

For my enjoyment, I thought that the incredible photographic reproductions were well worth the price of my ticket. In each and every shop and subsequent tour stop, the choice, quality and size of the photographs on display was phenomenal. I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of the Madison Square Garden photographic display as well. To see Elvis - lifesize - in these pictures, was breathtaking. All of the showmanship and drama that was part of his performances was so readily apparent in these pictures. I just had to wonder how they could have been 'forgotten' about all of these years.

How come you never had the desire to go to Graceland? I was there in 1983 and it was actually the size and design of the house that impressed me the most. It made me realize that despite all his fame and money he did not turn Graceland into one of those huge out lavish mansions that most people of wealth and power desire. It was his home and seeing how he kept it "small " showed me how humble he was and how much he must of enjoyed the comforts it gave him.

Kim beat me to it, but that's my question as well? I can't imagine as an Elvis fan having no desire to go and see Graceland. My parents took me to see it twice before he died....I loved him and just had to see where he lived. Since it's been open to the public I would love to be able to go at least twice a year.:blush:

I just think about the money and effort it took for me to get there ! Just imagine living a few hours away! That is my life long dream to go back and I live a half a world away!! Oh if I could only get in my car and drive there!!!

My brothers were going to take me in 1986 as a surprise on my birthday.
My wife had just had our last child and she could not go-so I told them perhaps another time.

I have never been to Graceland, but I hope to go one day. ;) I would love to see it, just to be in Elvis' house, even though it might be considered a tourist attraction by some..
