With all these "new" Christmas compilations, I think it's safe to divide the Elvis Christmas albums in these two:

O Come, All Ye Faithful, If I Get Home On Christmas Day, Holly Leaves And Christmas Trees and Merry Christmas Baby are one of my alltime favourite christmas songs.
I voted however for "ELvis Christmas Album" because that one is much more cheerful. You can hear on the sad songs on "a Wonderfull Christmas" that Elvis wasn't quite happy, and that's also hearable on the "should have been happy" tunes like 'Winter Wonderland' and 'Silver Bells'.
Elvis was overworked during that period: the songs he cut during this period aren't from the (upbeat) quality as the 1970 sessions. In that year (1970) he could make something great from even bad songs.
How great must this album have been when it would have been recorded in 1970. :xmas:

You are right my friend!
1971 was probably the worst year for Elvis to record a christmas album. It is obvious he wasn't in the mood. But his voice in the 70's was much more suited to this type of music.
So here I have a dilemma. From 1957 I love the uptempo songs like "Here Comes Santa Claus". In 1971 he seemingly found inspiration in slow somewhat "sader" songs like "It Won't Seem Like Christmas" and "If I Get Home On Christmas Day".
I vote for "The Wonderful World Of Christmas" as my favorite because the overall sound is more suited to the Christmas atmosphere.

Both albums are nice, but I voted for "Christmas Album".
Especially the original vinyl album had a great cover, complete with color booklet...

Definitely "Christmas Album".
And I am amazed to see that so many people have chosen "Wonderful World of Christmas" since the -57 album is considered to be one of the best x-mas albums of all time. But I guess that shows that fans and critics don't always think alike.
My favourite x-mas song by Elvis is definitely "Santa Claus Is Back In Town". It is just the best track to open the album with, as a statement to say that "This will not be your ordinary x-mas album. Get ready!" :D (The only other album opener that was just as cool would probably be "wearing that loved on look" on "Elvis From Memphis") And Irving Berlin going on the record criticising the record just makes it way cooler!! Elvis was the first punk-rocker!!

good thread (y)
I love both of these albums, songwise and lyrically speaking I would choose the 1971 album 'The Wonderful World Of Christmas'. But because Im more a Rock N Roll fan I am going to pick the 1957 christmas album. and If there are any fans here who have the USA 1957 package of the album, they will know that It Is absolutley fantastic with all those photos from the Jailhouse Rock images.

I vote for "The Wonderful World Of Christmas" for several reasons.
In 1957 Elvis wasn't really ready (vocally) to record Christmas songs in a way that the Christmas spirit is present. Most of the 1957 recordings are uptempo rock/blues influenced songs and Elvis is still not at ease in a ballad.
In 1971 his voice was so rich that he could do anything with it if he put his mind to it. Besides that the arrangements of the songs are wonderful. And although Elvis might not be on his best during these 1971 recording sessions his worst is still something a lot of other artists could envy.
