In addition to what has already been mentioned, I'm partial to the guitar work on "Too Much" and "I Need Your Love Tonight". James Burton's furious picking in the Aloha Rehearsal and Main event is also considerable - he really took "Hound Dog", for example, to a whole new level.

Hound Dog. Ancient psychedelia as Moore him self descrived it.
My Baby Left Me. Pure Scotty Moore sound, with the echosonic and slight distortion sound.
Mystery Train and Trying To Get To You. So mysterious, like something coming out of the highway darkness midnight horizont radio waves... what?
Milkcow Blues. All the old rural blues feel on it.
Baby Lest Play House, I Got a Woman. If this is not hot for you you maybe dead.
Just Because. Its guitar wise as Keith Richards put it.
Lawdy Miss Clawdy, Tutti Frutti, So Glad your Mine, Rip it up, Shake Rattle and Roll. Pure 50's rock guitar magic.
When It Rains it Really Pours '57. Scotty did play the Blues.

Did anyone notice how Moore changed his style by '66 on a song called You Gotta Stop?

Johnny B Good TTWII Rehearsals. Sound much more raw and wild than in the 69 live versions or later versions.
Merry Christmas Baby. THis is no christmas song, I mean it is but, this is an old blues song by Lue Baxter and Johny Moore, I think this is one of Elvis greatest blues performances and Jame Burton pickin both in the live Jam and spetialy on the dubbed playing he did for the single are a jewell.
Ill Be Home On Christmas Day. Electric Guitar version. Marvellous mix of country and blues playing.

On a sweet sweet note: Remeber the guitar playing on I Need SOme Body To Lean On? thats another great one, dont remember who play on that one, it was Billy Strange? Oh and remember the ultra psychedelic surf guitar sounds of the great Tommy Tadesco on the '68 comeback special studio recordings and standup shows?

I am so glad you are on this board! Some great suggestions! I went back and listened to most of these and I couldn't agree more! I also am glad you mentioned some of the great session guitarists that usually don't get any mention, ie.. the great Jerry Reed. (always loved that guy and always thought he never got due respect in the Guitar world. Man can that guy pick!)

Yes, I completely agree. He is one on my all-time favorites, and SO underrated. So very funky too. Fit Elvis' style perfectly. If you can find his Pickin' CD anywhere - pick it up. He does a lot of amazing guitar playing on that!

There was an album in the 80's called sound of your cry I think. It contained a live version of what 'd I Say where James let rip on an extended guitar version that I have not been able to find on CD. Anyone know which version this is?

That sounds like the version that was released on Collector's Gold in the early 90's. It looks like that same version is also on the FTD Elvis at the International - but I have not heard it. That sounds like the version you are describing. Very fast, very long version, and yes - excellent guitar!

I believe the version was first released on vinyl on Elvis' Greatest Hits Vol. 1. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

My favorite Elvis version of "What'd I Say" will always be the rehearsal found on the Platinum box set. J.B. is not slouching on that one either! "Washed My Hands In Muddy Water" is also cool. I like the way they play it, slower and funkier.
