Hi Everybody, :)
If you've been to Graceland, what are you impressions after visiting?
What interesting things did you pick up on while there?
If you haven't been yet, let us know your feelings about going and what you would like to see.
Tommy :)
I have a job interview in Memphis next month, so it's as good an excuse as any to visit Graceland I think- have never been before, so haven't really got a clue what to expect.:king:

Mez,
You will have a great time at Graceland. It's a wonderful place. (y) I feel Elvis' presence so when I was there. Anything we can do to help you with let me know. Did you look up things to do on the net? Don't forget to take along a Magic Marker Pen to write on the stone wall at Graceland. :)
Thank you for your reply and good luck with your job!
Tommy :)
Hi,
I first visited 'THE House on the hill' a couple of years ago and it was everything I dreamed of and so much more.
No words can describe the feelings you feel when you visit the Mansion of your Idol, especially when your Idol is the one and only 'King of Rock 'n' Roll'. From your first steps inside the hallway to the tranquil beauty of the walk to the Meditation Gardens, it's an emotional rollercoaster ride that will have your mind conjuring up images of THE Man living there between 1957 and 1977 - it's your choice, pick a year...any year...he's always there.
Beautiful.

GREAT QUESTION TOMMY!!! (y)
I've been to Memphis twice...the very first time I was there was in October, 1987 and it was a very surreal experience! The very first time we drove down Elvis Presley Boulevard, I fully expected to hear ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA playing as we approached the mansion!! It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, just staring at the mansion sitting in all of it's grandiose splendor up on that hill!!! That time, I toured the mansion twice and at that time, they still had tour guides conducting the tours around the house, telling you all of the details about each room, etc. Even touring the house twice, I felt like I had missed things and just couldn't wait to get back for my next visit!!
The second time I visited, was during Elvis Week 2000!! It was so neat to compare the 2 visits...the first visit during a non-Elvis week, when I was more or less just another tourist versus the second trip where I was obviously a die-hard Elvis fan taking in all the sights and sounds of Elvis Week!! If you have never been to Elvis Week, you owe it to yourself to attend at least a couple of days during the week, if possible! It was so neat to talk to so many Elvis fans, to meet new friends and renew old friendships....all while standing in the shadow of THE mansion!! During this visit, I also toured the house twice...once using the new cassette taped tour guide and the other time without it. While it was nice hearing the cassette taped tour, I think I enjoyed the second tour more when I could concentrate on the things I wanted to see and look at, and not necessarily what highlights were being talked about on the tape! Again, if you do visit Graceland and you have the time and the means to do so, I would HIGHLY recommend trying this style of touring the house...once with the taped guide and once without!! :)
Visiting Graceland is a surreal experience to be sure....and I absolutely can't wait to get back again!!!

Hi Jungleroom 76,
Nice to hear from you and your description of Graceland. I have been twice too. I took some really cool photos inside. I loved the whole experience. I want to go back again! Wow I'm glad you have been there. (y)
Thanks again,
Tommy :)

That is SO cool that you were able to get some pictures inside the mansion....I know how strict they are about not using flash photography, and any of the photos that I tried to take inside without a flash just didn't turn out!! (n)
Have you been during Elvis Week Tommy? If not, you REALLY owe it to yourself to go at that time....there are SO many things going on, including all of the free performances that take place around Graceland Crossing. LOTS of Elvis impersonators and tribute artists, which are fun to watch (in my opinion!!)!! It costs a lot more money at that time, unfortunately...that is the BAD part!! All of the meetings, activities, etc. that Graceland plans for Elvis Week usually have an admittance fee (which sometimes can be quite high, depending on the activity)...so make sure you save all your pennies and nickels if you go during Elvis Week! But you really do owe it to yourself to go at least once during Elvis Week, just to soak in the whole atmosphere!!! :king:

Hello,
Yes I guess I'd better go during Elvis Week, thanks for the nice information about Elvis Week. :) I took my camea one that I can open the lens aperture used fast film 400 without the flash. This was on my second trip, learned from the first one about no flash. So I went more prepared the second time.
Thank you for the replies,
Tommy :)
why don't they like you using a flash? are you not really meant to take pictures?

hi folks,
I visited memphis/graceland for the second time in january this year, it was a 40th birthday present from my fiancee. I clearly remember the very first time i went (2 years ago and in january again), the first thing i remember seeing as we arrived in the evening was the lisa marie being lit up by the spotlights around her, i distinctly remember thinking 'yes son, you have arrived in the promised land', we went up e.p. boulevard turned around and came back down only to see graceland so beautifully lit up with all the lights and natvity scene etc, the feeling that hit me was awesome i did'nt know what to think or do on the moment i saw the mansion.
Nothing could prepare me for the trip that i was to take around the house, as has been said already i experienced every single emotion that a person can go through, walking through the front door i half expected elvis himself to be standing at the top of the stairs to welcome me in, no matter what the weather is like outside the mansion always feels so warm and homely to me and it's a feeling that dont have even in my own house!!.
The hall of gold was the first thing that really sent shivers through me, i have seen it hundreds of times in books on film etc, but nothing can prepare you for seeing it with your own 2 eyes, it really hammers home the point that elvis was indeed a very unique and extraordinary person with a god given talent and these were accolades to testify to the fact.
As you go through the house there is moments where you think you have seen it all, but all that changes as soon as you see the meditation garden, I remember standing there feeling every single ounce of pain that a person could endure and the tears came very very easily, all i could really think was that it was not fair that he should no longer be with us and that he deserved a long a fruitful life as opposed to the one that he had at the end.
I thought after visiting the first time that surely the second time would be easier, but no, it was even harder to comprehend, it was a dream come true to visit, as i left i kissed a coin, threw it in the fountain and promised 'E' that i would come back and see him again, and you can bet your sweet a** that i will.
To anyone who has never been, SAVE ALL YOU HAVE AND PLEASE VISIT THE HOME OF THE KING, YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED. cheers for reading this, rick.

Hi Rick,
Wow thank you for your memories of Graceland and Elvis. How emotional your trips were. It can be very emotional it's hard to go by Elvis' gravesite.
I've never been at Christmas, I bet it was just beautiful. (y)

Hi mez,
Because of the light it can do damage to the furnishings and they want to protect it. They keep the light out even the curtains are closed. I have seen photos with the curtains open, but these are rare (those are probably the ones taken for commerical reasons) and of course you can buy photos of Graceland inside and out from the stores there.
Thanks for your queston,
Tommy :)

Well, I have never been in Graceland... :'( I had planned to visit it five years ago, but those planes failed because of school and some other things (like money... I'm "a bit" close to EU but it would be, still, kind of expensive trip :P).
I wanted to go Graceland for my 21th birthday (to celebrate Elvis' and mine, both at once :D) but I guess I better wait a little longer. I wish I can visit that wonderful place on August of 2007. That occasion is gonna be a truly especial one, so maybe is a nice idea to wait and be at Elvis home for his 30th anniversary of... you know...
I try to don't feel sad. I haven't gone to Graceland yet, but I own some cute souvenirs that a friend of mine gave to me while ago. Those are part of my treasure.

I WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK TO MEMPHIS FOR THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2007!!! SADLY, WITH THE COST OF EVERYTHING GOING UP THESE DAYS, THAT PROBABLY WON'T HAPPEN... :'(
But I am anxious to see what exciting events EPE will plan for the 30th anniversary, especially since Mr. Sillerman took over!! :hmm:

Yes, it will be interesting to see what Mr. Sillerman will be doing since he took over. :hmm: One thing the EPE catalog went "Waydown" and not Elvis' song either! :D The catalog used to be so much better and much more merchandise to purchase.
I hope some nice things will come out of the 30th Anniversary (y) Like Elvis On Tour Special Edition!
Tommy :)
Jungleroom76
10-04-2005, 03:57 PM
The EPE catalog is a whole other issue that I will refrain from getting into....
I hope EPE/RCA/Turner-MGM will do something with ELVIS ON TOUR to commemorate the 30th anniversary (if not sooner!) of Elvis' passing -- what publicity that would garner if a special edition of EOT were to be tied in with the 30th anniversary of Elvis' passing (and the 25th anniversary of the original release of EOT as well!!)!!
If so, look for me Tommy....I'll be in line right behind you when ELVIS ON TOUR: SPECIAL EDITION goes on sale!!! (y)

In May of 2004, I was planning a trip to Atlanta to visit my big brother. I decided to make a stop in Memphis. I arrived about 3 in the afternoon and was picked up at the airport by the van from Heartbreak Hotel. There were 2 girls on it and we started chatting. Pretty soon, the driver of the van was involved in the conversation too. None of them could believe that I was there all by myself and I was only staying one night! That night we all went to Beale Street and had a blast! Yes, Tom (the driver from Heartbreak) went with us!
The next morning I got up and met the girls for the tour of Graceland. One of the girls was a huge Elvis fan, the other one not so much. As soon as I got close to those famous front steps, I got teary-eyed. I cried off and on through the whole house! It was just overwhelming being there where Elvis had lived. You could just feel his presence there so strongly! My only regret is that I wasted too much time taking pictures of everything. It took away from the whole experience. Of course after the tour, we went to the shops and spent lots of money on souveniers!
The coolest thing is that the girl who was a big Elvis fan that I met there has become a very good friend! She lives in Florida(I'm from California) and we talk on the phone every week for at least an hour. We used to only talk about Elvis, but now we talk about everything! We have already made reservations to meet in Memphis again next May. It will be her 60th and my 50th birthdays!! This time we will stay for 4 or 5 days and see everything, including driving down to Tupelo!! And I'm NOT going to take pictures inside Graceland this time at all. I'm going to go slowly and drink in all the sights!

AWESOME STORY LINDNET!!! (y)
While I was in Memphis for Elvis Week 2000, I was having breakfast at the Chrome Grille and while I was there, I overheard an Elvis Tribute Artist talking to some other fans. I thought I heard him say his name (Gary) and so I went over and introduced myself and asked him if I had heard correctly...turns out I did, and Gary was an Elvis fan that I had met on the internet a couple of years before and we became good friends through e-mail!! It was pure luck that we were both having breakfast in the Chrome Grille at the same time! We had talked about meeting up in Memphis, but Gary had lost my hotel information and didn't know how to get a hold of me...but as fate would have it, we were both there having breakfast that morning! We wound up hanging out for the rest of my time in Memphis, and since then, we have made it a weekly tradition to chat on the phone every Wednesday night!! It is SO COOL to meet up with other fans during Elvis Week, and if you haven't had a chance to go to Memphis for Elvis Week, I HIGHLY recommend that all Elvis fans try to get to Memphis at least once for some of Elvis Week....it is just amazing, like a HUGE family reunion!!
And Lindnet, if I might make a suggestion to you...when you go back to Memphis next May to take another tour of the house, might I suggest you try the tour without the headphone tour? When I was last in Memphis in 2000, I took the tour of the house twice....once with the headphones and once without, and while hearing the pre-recorded tour was cool for the complete tour experience, I found myself REALLY enjoying the second tour without the headphones, when I could just concentrate on the sights and sounds of the house...seeing and hearing what I wanted to, instead of what highlights the recorded tour tape was pointing out. I'd be interested to hear how you like the tour without the headphones, if you give it a try! :hmm:

Thanks for the suggestion, Mike! I must have read that part about doing the tour without the headphones on this board somewhere, did you post it recently? I remember thinking it was a great idea! And I will try it for sure!! And how cool is that, you made a lifelong friend through Elvis too!
My girlfriend from Florida and I have discussed trying to visit Memphis during either the January or August celebrations, but just weren't sure we wanted to be there when everything is so crowded. I think the next time, we will try to do Elvis week, but this time we'll go in May. I'd really like to experience Elvis week, I just have to talk her into it.
Tommy, I know just what you mean....wouldn't Elvis just be touched by how much he still influences people's lives? And he was afraid nobody would remember him!
Jungleroom76
10-06-2005, 12:58 PM
Yes actually, I did post that in one of my other posts in this thread, but since you were talking about going back to Memphis in May, I thought I would offer my opinion on that again!! It really is so cool to just wander through the mansion without the headphone tour...if you listen really closely, you can almost hear Elvis singing in the Jungle Room...I know it sounds kind of silly, but I swear I could hear Elvis singing in there!!! ;)
I've never been to Memphis in January, but I know they have so many more events planned during Elvis Week in August! Plus the weather is better that time of year (hotter, but better) and there are more fans down there, which is really cool...you get to meet so many more fans! So if you ever do get to go to Memphis during Elvis Week, I really think you will love it! And it's not as crowded as you might think either...there are so many events happening all around the city, so everyone is spread out pretty well! The tours move along smoothly, and the area outside Graceland Crossing is busy without being too crowded (except for the restaurants and gift shops, which are usually packed...the one drawback! You may want to consider eating off Graceland property during Elvis Week! Just my opinion... ) Plus, there is LOTS of entertainment happening around Graceland Crossing during Elvis Week....plenty of tribute artists performing in tents around Graceland Crossing, which is cool to stop and listen to...and it's FREE!!! (y)

I was there in september 2004, we had a trip by car, from NY to nashville, memphis, back up to niagara and again NY to catch our plane back to Belgium....
It was the trip of my life,..never been to the states and than this...
Of course Graceland was the highlight...It must have been 30 years i talked about visiting the mansion, and finally the moment was there...
There i was standing at the gates for about 30 minutes, realizing i was in front of the house of my King...unbelieveble...
and later inside, watching all the rooms, clothes, records, ... i saw them a hundred times on video and pics, and now they were just in front of me... i had no words..
after a difficult moment at Elvis' grave i left with the greatest memory of my life..."I WAS AT GRACELAND"....so guys, in 2007 i go back to be there on elvisweek...for another impressive moment...

For anyone who hasn't made the trip to Graceland, I would personally recommend going in December. I'd love to try to get down there this December if possible, but I don't know about that.
I went in December of 1999, and it was for sure one of the most amazing trips there for me. Liking Elvis and the Christmas season like I do, it was just a magical time to be there. Seeing the way Elvis had the place decorated plus having all the new light displays, which are very much in keeping with Elvis' tastes, if you ask me, is just so cool.
Now, I haven't been around Elvis' birthday, but to me seeing all those decorations a couple weeks after Christmas would be a little depressing.
The neat thing about going during the Christmas season is that (and I assume you can still do this) with your mansion tour ticket stub, you are allowed to go back into the house in the evening to go through at your own pace! That takes care of going through twice without having to pay for two tickets, and doing it with and without the headphones. Plus, you hear Elvis' Christmas songs playing throughout the house, which is so cool.
Even if you're not a big Christmas person, Elvis being into it like he was makes this experience extra special...perhaps his presence is felt even more than usual.
It's great to mingle with all the the fellow fans during Elvis Week, but if you want to feel less like you're being shuffled through the house at EPE's pace, I recommend going during this very festive but far less crowded time of year. In addition to my own family, my parents and one of my sisters and aunt and uncle and cousins also went on this trip. Most of them are not necessarily Elvis fans, but they all really enjoyed it.
Another plus is you don't have to endure the Memphis summer heat!
O come, all E faithful!

Despite my extreme dislike for winter ;) , I would love to see Graceland all decked out in lights!! I've seen pictures of the new Osborne Jennings light display that was added to the original decorations that Elvis had, and you are absolutely right....they are definitely in keeping with what Elvis would have done!!! :)
Now that you mention the thing about being able to go back through Graceland in the evening with your tour ticket stub, that is a definite bonus!!! I had forgotten all about that little "bonus" of going around the holidays!
But would you say that I am right in suggesting to other fans that have never been to Graceland to really try to take the tour twice...once with, and once without the headphone tour?? :hmm:
Thanks for the holiday information pal!!! :)

Hi,
I first visited 'THE House on the hill' a couple of years ago and it was everything I dreamed of and so much more.
Beautiful.

Hey Guys,
The best time to visit Graceland was when it first opened to the public back in the early 80's.
None of the stuff was behind glass & you could touch his items and even go up and get photographed sitting in some of E's cars.
If you were really lucky, ......... you might've happened across EP's Aunt Delta ......... she would either let you sniff the whiskey in her coffee cup, curse at you, or ........... sic Elvis' favorite pomeranian dog "Edmond" on you. A true taste of what E himself must of felt like @ "Home Sweet Home."
Then there's also the lady who found a toe-nail in The Jungle Room carpet, ................... unfortunately, it later turned out to be Lamar Fike's replete with onychomycosis.

Hi Everybody, :)
If you've been to Graceland, what are you impressions after visiting?
What interesting things did you pick up on while there?
If you haven't been yet, let us know your feelings about going and what you would like to see.
Tommy :)
Wow!Good question.No.I have never visited Graceland, but I will someday. The only thing I know is that I WILL NOT VISIT THE GRAVE.Can't do it.One thing I know is that I will take something with me.I will not still anything valuable.Probably a flower from the garden to put it inside of one of my books(the Bible perhaps.)I know that I will cry alot:(

Hello,
Yes I guess I'd better go during Elvis Week, thanks for the nice information about Elvis Week. :) I took my camea one that I can open the lens aperture used fast film 400 without the flash. This was on my second trip, learned from the first one about no flash. So I went more prepared the second time.
Thank you for the replies,
Tommy :)
I know you and I cant use flash photography at Graceland but watch this movie and count how many times the flashes go off. I dont like double standards and if flash is bad for the artifacts then it should'nt be used at all even by the President. I'm sure this is more of Priscilla's money hungry publicity seeking.

Yes, you will cry, I know I did. Everybody does the first time. But it really would be a shame if you didn't go up to Elvis's grave.
I always feel his presence inside the house but when I walk up to his grave I just get calm and sit there and meditate a little.
When I leave I lay my hand on his grave and wispher a litlle message to him. Somehow I feel that he knows I'm there.
So Girlhappy, if you go Graceland, please do visit his grave. Don't be ashamed or afraid when you cry, my bet is you won't be the only one. Just let your feelings go free and you wil feel a lot better afterwards.
Yvonne.
