"If the songs don't go over, we can always do a medley of costumes..."

This is a **** funny line. But that aside, it amuses me the WAY in which Elvis SAYS it. Although not a man to put on airs and graces, it sounds like he's trying to be posh - especially as he says "medley of costumes". Afterall, there were some very rich and "well to do" people in Las Vegas. I dunno. Maybe it's just me. :D

(I don't really know where I'm going with this. I'll let you folks decide on the responses...)

I think Elvis in his way even at his age of maturity was a man who was still unsure of himself in ways. It's kind of hard to think that but I do sometimes. Did he really ever know just how great he was?

Probably not, but that may have been a good thing. If he'd realized it, he may have changed -- and then, paradoxically, he might have lost some or all of that greatness.

On the other hand, though, one of my favorite Muhammad Ali quotes goes something like: "You have to believe that you're the best. If not, then pretend you are." It's hard to argue with Ali's success in his field, so he may have been on to something there.

So, in short, as usual, I have no answers...only more questions...

It was just his way to joke with his image. I don't think there was something really deep in it. They all went over the setlist for that night to and he expessed the way thing might go (or not). And if everything else fails.......and then the famouse sentence came. But you have to be careful only focussing on that sentence, you have consider the who scene otherwise it's going to live its own life.

The thing that stands out in my mind about that is how the impact of it is lost due to someone's interrupting him as he said it. I can't remember who it was now that did it, but as I recall it went something like...

If the songs don't go over, we can do a medley We of can costumes pray!

And of course laughter immediately followed, but it seemed to be more about the interrupter laughing at his own joke. And sadly, Elvis' clever comment seemed to be largely missed.

It also surprised me that he did not get bothered by that. Or am I the only one who saw these things in this way?

I think he was always nervous and of course the best cover-up is to joke around.
I think in 72 of 73 Elvis began to realize how great he was. But I have always felt this is what contributed to his decline. He could raise a finger and the crowd went wild, he could do a less than great show and still receive long ovations. When he had to work because he was unsure of his reception is when he sparked.

Probably true... I know from COllege Park, MD, how he said that "all he had to do was turn around", yo can definitely see that.

This is a **** funny line.

Just another example of Elvis' incredible sense of humor, even when he was EXTREMELY nervous! :lmfao:

I think Elvis' sense of humor is one of his lesser-known qualities to those that aren't really fans...and I think it's one of the qualities that helps to bring more fans into the fold once they realize what a down-to-earth and funny person Elvis really was. :hmm:

His fun, backstage, and on stage, was his big secret I always think.

He came across like having a ball, also on stage, specially in the early seventies, and 1975, and end of 1976.

His true genius was to make it look like it was nothing special he did, joking with his own career, involving fans during a concert like he was there to just sing songs.

Meanwhile he was larger than life, but he never gave anyone that idea when seeing him.
