View Full Version : Songs for a "Katrina" charity single?

In the wake of September 11, one of the nice gestures by BMG & EPE was the release of the Elvis single America The Beautiful/Amazing Grace/If I Can Dream, with proceeds benefiting Red Cross disaster relief. While those of us who can should continue to contribute directly, such as through the Red Cross link provided by Albert, I think the recent hurricane "Katrina" disaster warrants another charity Elvis single--especially considering that Elvis' birth state is among those affected by this disaster.

Below would be my choices for this single, but I would like to know what songs everyone else would choose.

01. New Orleans
Sort of an obvious choice, I guess, but definitely a different style song than most of the general public are used to hearing Elvis sing.

02. Where No One Stands Alone
It's hard to beat "Amazing Grace," so this one was a tough choice for me. It was a toss-up between this song and "You'll Never Walk Alone." I ultimately chose this one because it is less well known--although one could make the argument that "You'll Never Walk Alone" should be chosen precisely because it is better known.

03. Shake A Hand
This may seem like an odd choice, given the "I'm in love with you so 'til I don't know what to do" verse. For me, though, this song also represents lending a helping hand to those in need: "Shake a hand if you can...", "...don't forget to pray, and shake a hand every day," etc. It's also a wonderful and overlooked performance that would nicely round out this single.

What songs would you choose and why?

Somebody Bigger Than You and I

worn out with worry, filled with despair,
who will give you courage to go on from there....
somebody bigger than you and I.

A marvelous idea. My picks would include:

1). An American Trilogy = speaks of tragedy and triumph in Dixie

2). You'll Never Walk Alone = speaks of how faith and human compassion can bring comfort and assistance

3). Bridge Over Troubled Water = which speaks of helping, even carrying, someone(s) through most difficult period.

Thanks for the great posts and song ideas, everyone! Unfortunately, I've seen no indications from EPE or Sony/BMG that an Elvis charity single to support Katrina victims will become a reality.

That's too bad, Palerider, isn't it? Your idea was really a good one. Thanks for trying.

IM I agree with you , especially "You'll Never Walk Alone" perfect for the Katrina disaster-When You walk thru a storm....I could see a video with survivors chest deep in water and so on....
