my boy? what boy?

Hello!

I've been watching bits and pieces of the 1968 special--it would probably be a better idea if I watched it from beginning to end... but I'm wondering why Elvis and the guys, during their "informal" section of the show kept saying "my boy"?

At first I thought the guys were calling Elvis "my boy"...but that just didn't fit... I've read in several books that the Colonel called Elvis "his" boy. I thought that was just awful, but considering the time and place, maybe it was normal?

Any insights?

Hi Cutie Pie,

From what I have heard over the years, it was Elvis' take on Colonel Parker referring to him as his 'boy'. I think it was Elvis & the guys impersonation of how the Colonel used to speak the term.

This might not be 100% so maybe someone can offer some more information on this subject.

"my boy" is just an expression they use. it's not "anyones" boy :D it's just something they say

If you watch the "Elvis meet Nixon" tv-show (with somebody else playing Elvis), it seems like he couldn't say a complete sentence without saying "my boy, my boy".... It really became a catchphrase, just like "Elvis has left the building", "thank you, thank you very much" and "my momma always said...."

Yes--I have the deluxe set. It's been a busy few weeks, and I haven't been able to watch it from beginning to end. I've mostly been skipping around--and watching the informal "jam" session. and I must say, WOW!

I also bought the 1956 DVD -- it's pretty good, but the producers of it probably could have done a lot more with the footage.

That was just Elvis' way of saying "oh boy" or "gosh" or "man oh man" or even just simply sighing. That was his slang way of putting it. He's not talking about an actual person or boy. :doh:

I always took it to be some kind of Southern or Memphian slang.

Any linguists or Southerners here who can shed some light on this?
